New video! (English Shinkansen Ticket Vending Machine in Osaka Station) • (How to) Buy Shinkanse...
I'm at Tokyo Station (at 6am) to ride Japan's bullet train to Kyoto this morning. I don't have a JR Rail Pass but I do have 15 minutes to get on the train! I also want an ekiben (train bento or boxed lunch) and A SEAT ON THE TRAIN!
I will buy a NON-RESERVED TICKET from a vending machine.
The bento shop is on the way. It's time to RUN!!
(Can I get both in time?)

The ticket purchase process is deficient. It needs about 39 more steps, in addition to voice confirmation, driver license scan, breath analysis, and knowledge of who's on first. Amtrak take note.

I'm impressed that you did all that, went live, and still made the train...all within 15mins! I love riding the shinkansen. Yet, I wish they would make the doors a little wider so it's easier to get luggage out quickly. The local train double doors are better for luggage. Btw, they have drink vending machines on the shinkansen.

If you plan on travelling around, buy a 1, 2 or 3 week JR rail pass. Its cheaper to travel that way and you can only buy it outside of Japan. Lets you go on all JR rail lines, you can also reserve seats with it.

This brings back memories. Brought a 1 week JR pass in 2014 or 2015 when I visited Tokyo, went to Kyoto twice, very fast train, very fast turn over when trains stops to the cleaners going through the cars and letting you on. very efficient. ONLY issue I had was the train stoppages and all communications were in Japanese. Found out that when an Earthquake was detected, the rail system stops all trains, otherwise the rides were great.

James Hatfield How right you are. They are all Russian operatives. Disguised as Americans by clever Russian plastic surgery and a careful creation of fake documents like they made in the famous movie "The Bridge on the River Kwai". Did you know that Walter Cronkite was actually a Chinese agent. I have to hand it to them..... clever. Thanks for pointing this out!!! Wooops! Wrong famous movie....I meant "escape from stalag 17" and and and I would bet the Russians have carved a tunnel all the way from there to a secret door under the statue of liberty in New York City. I bet it has running water and toilets to make the long walk more fun. Probably has little Cafe's along the way for stopping to eat. Those crafty Devils. Toby is behind it all :-(

John, The toilet comment is so spot on (no pun intended) - their seats were spotless. Also the die hard fans on our Tokyo -Kyoto Shinkansen had an app (like a google maps) that showed them when Fujisan would make an appearance and were straining to see it - we all did. Arigato

Wow. Great!! I've been wanting to have a trip to japan like you did. It seems really fun. I wanna take the train '新幹線' as well. I've never taken it even though i've been to japan 8times before. Thank you for making videos and sharing them.

Nice! Fond memories... I rode one of those with my family going along Fuji-san... some 8 years ago now? It's been a while. Clear day, great view. The ride is so smooth you don't seem to be moving, apart from the scenery of course. We bought the ekiben inside the train with train service, probably paid extra for that. xD But it was great, so no complaints. One day I'll go there again.

I'm thinking about going to Japan in 2020. is it hard to get around if you have no knowledge of Japanese?
@7upepsicola

Dayz_legend I think you may have some trouble in small cities in the contryside, but if you ask people in English slowly, they probably solve the problem. We, Japanese, are cooperative to people who can't understand Japanese. But you better ask young people like students and business persons because old people usually can't understand English at all.

Google Map helped a lot too when we visited there a couple of years ago, probably the most confusing is their railway system but as G.Villenueve said they are really helpful so you'll be just fine by asking for directions! :)

I agree . I went from Tokyo to Fukui with extremely limited Japanese and it wasn’t easy at all . Absolutely no one speaks English in even medium sized towns even Fukui which I consider mid sized . They have every right to not know any English but we have every right to not go again too . Although I will study Japanese very hard for a year and see if it makes a difference on my next trip . I found that even people who operate stores in large cities like Nagoya and Tokyo don’t speak English either . I was lucky , my fiancée lives there and speaks Japanese so once I got to her it was easy , but getting there was hella hard . Good luck on your trip , I’m sure you’ll enjoy it . The people are very polite and disciplined . It’s nice to see human beings behaving humanly . English or lack of it was my only gripe , but you can’t have your cake and eat it too .

Do they have an English screen for us non Japanese?
@onlyinjapanGO
@onlyinjapanGO 7 жыл бұрын
藤原正彦 yes, they have an English screen but I thought I'd try something for those learning Japanese. Everyone would know what I was picking if in English. This is what it was like for me when I came to Japan before the non-Japanese menus :p but don't worry! It's so easy to get to where you want to go!

Most stations have English in a smaller font on station signs, and most LED displays/platform boards flicker between Japanese and English. If buying a ticket from a machine, most of them have an English option on the first screen. If buying a ticket from or interacting with station staff, not everyone will know a foreign language. I guess in the more regional you go, the less chance of anyone greatly understanding you. But if you're somewhere populous like Tokyo, don't be too worried, as there is probably someone else in the same station, in the same situation.

Where do you live? That is not true that Malaysia and Indonesia are tolerant Muslim countries. Maybe 50 years ago, Malaysia and Indonesia were truly more tolerant Muslim majority nations, not any more. I know this because I live in Singapore and BOTH these countries are our immediate neighbours. For a start, Malaysia has so many race and religious problems. The Malay Muslim majority in Malaysia use religion (Islam) in politics to get votes from the Malay Muslim population. Christians have had their churches closed or demolished and permits to build new churches are often not granted, same in Indonesia (especially in Java and Sumatra). Christians have been banned from using the word, 'Allah' in the Malay language bibles. Allah simply means 'God' in Arabic. Even Arab Christians in the Middle East use the word 'Allah' when they speak of 'God'. 40-50 years ago, most Malay and Indonesian Muslim women hardly worn the hijab, only the older, married women worn a loose head veil or a small head scarf to cover their hair. Today, most (80-90%) of Malay women and a growing number of Indonesian women in Indonesia especially Java, Sumatra, Riau Islands, wear the hijab. So, to say that Muslims in these 2 countries are the MOST tolerant is false. In is more tolerant compared to extremist Muslim countries like Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Somalia, Afghanistan and Sudan, etc. Even, Turkey watch I have visited is becoming more conservative and intolerant.

I think bento is sold in Shinkansen. Could you not buy ?
@onlyinjapanGO
@onlyinjapanGO 7 жыл бұрын
+yonaoimete they do have bentos ON the train but the choose is very small and more expensive. I prefer to buy it from a shop so I can pick from so many! It's more fun :) also, each station has a famous bento (regional area, regional food specialities) and the Shinkansen lady with the coffee and food doesn't carry any regional foods. In general, bentos cost between ¥800 and ¥1500 or $8 to $15 dollars. -John
