Looks like you made it about 150'. Not bad. For any serious zipline, steel cable is recommended. I always use 3/8 aircraft cable. Compression springs and an old motorcycle tire work good for braking. Look for a 5% drop when setting up. I've never seen a good braking method that won't wear out ropes, but running into the dirt seemed to work well ;-).

Oh and BTW Blue Moon.....I bought mine because of the kid from Climbing Arborist but it's great seeing others I respect like you who also use it!!! Stuff is insane right? I tried my first splice of it and, while it didn't go as-planned, I did get to find out that even a fresh utility knife wasn't enough to make a dent in the outer braiding/cover of the rope, will never doubt my line going through natural-crotches again (still use false crotches/fricttion-savers but that's simply to keep my rope newer&slicker so my techniques work better ie cammed ascenders and smooth descents with figure-8's!)

Thanks for the video learned a lot. Just wondering why you used rope instead of steel cable? And if we want to save the trees from long term damage shouldn't I put wooden blocks around the trunk where the rope goes around the tree?
@FreeFallinTrees6 жыл бұрын
Brian Trudeau thanks for commenting! For the least damage to the trees I like doing temporary ziplines for a day or an event, and using rope. There is usually no need to protect the bark since rope doesn't cut like cable, and there is no movement against the tree. For more permanent installations, yes cable is best. Using blocks is fine for a short term solution but bolting through a trunk will put less stress on the tree for ziplines that are going to get left in place.
@houdini9876 жыл бұрын
Thanks for replying so quickly. If I am installing a permanent zip line however, would you recommend steel cables and blocks to protect the bark if they are trees I care about ?
@FreeFallinTrees6 жыл бұрын
Keep in mind that the only living part of the tree is that cambium layer and bark around the outside. The wood inside is all dead and can't really be hurt. So even with blocks you are risking damage to that outer layer. For a permanent installation the best way is a large eye bolt all the way through the trunk with a good sized washer and double nut on the back. That way it touches as little of the bark as possible and can be loosened as the tree grows. Blocks are better than strapping to the tree directly, they would be a decent second choice.

Hi Germano thank you for watching! To keep kids safe you should install a brake on the steel cable to slow people down at the end. @FreeFallinTrees6 жыл бұрын
Hi Sara, 300 feet is a long run, that should make for a happy dog. It's hard to give advice without more info, but - You will want a line that does not stretch, I would use a steel cable, fastened with at least two cable clamps on each end. If you are fastening the ends to trees, it depends on how long this run will be there, if less than a year, you might be able to use axle straps from an auto store, if longer I would bolt into the tree trunk. Hopefully this gets you started.
@GeeKayKayGee6 жыл бұрын
Free Fallin I enjoyed your video but I have a question about the mechanical advantage of your tensioning system. Your diagram shows a 4:1 advantage being applied to the main line but with the rope angles shown (approximately 120 degree internal angle) it seems unlikely that you are getting 2:1 at the pulley attached to main line. I think that the 2 legs of the rope would have to go around the pulley and be parallel to each other to get a 2:1 advantage at that point. At the approximately 120 degree angle you show I would guess that the mechanical advantage would be closer to one and a quarter to one (1.25:1). If so the total mechanical advantage for your system would be 1.25:1 times 2:1 = 2.5:1 mechanical advantage. As I am not well schooled or practiced in calculating the force vectors for rope angles I may well be overlooking something, but does my approximate 2.5:1 or your 4:1 seem more accurate to you? Again, aside from all that your video was fun and thanks for posting it.
@FreeFallinTrees6 жыл бұрын
Chee Kay great observation! The system in the video is a 4:1 IDEAL mechanical advantage system. People use ideal to describe them because the actual calculation is next to impossible to predict and can only be found out by testing the system under load, and even then the actual MA changes as tension changes. To reach ideal MA a system would need to have 0 friction in all parts, 0 stretch, and exact angles. This would make my system actual 4:1 MA. People generally speak in ideal MA for convenience. If we were to ignore friction and stretch in the calculation and just look at the rope angles on that one pulley, you would still have 2:1 MA on one leg. Then the question becomes the angle coming off the main pulley, guessing let's say 45°. Guessing again, let's say that only gives us 1.75:1 actual MA. Multiply that by the 2:1 we already know about and the system would be 3.5:1 actual MA, throw back in friction, stretch, tension, gravity, earth rotation, etc. And you wind up with some actual number lower than that. But ain't nobody but NASA got time for that, so we have to say it's a sloppy 4:1 ideally. Hope this helps, climb on!
@leepoteat91146 жыл бұрын
This is actually a 6:1 theoretical MA by counting points of tension. Obviously you will not achieve this. As far as forces go at 120 degrees in this configuration each anchor will receive 100% of the load
@FreeFallinTrees6 жыл бұрын
Lee Poteat actually, if you look at deviation forces, at an angle of 120° each leg will generate 173% of force on the load from the main line. So each leg is holding just over 50% of the load
@leepoteat91146 жыл бұрын
Free Fallin, please forgive as I do not wish to sound condescending nor argumentative. www.ropebook.com/information/vector-forces/ You are speaking of an angular vector force but your diagram is in essence a high line with the load in the middle thus creating a vector force (two separate formulas)Try (if you haven’t already) to use a load cell on this system.
@FreeFallinTrees6 жыл бұрын
Lee Poteat I see what you are saying, o offense taken, and this would be true if the120° angle was between the 2 anchor legs, but I am estimating 120° angle from the main line to each leg, making the angle between the legs 60°, well below the critical angle for vector force. In this configuration 100lbs of pull on each leg would produce 173lbs of pull on the main line. Does this make sense?

Love your videos. I'm planning on building a zip line soon. Can you comment on using steel cable vs rope for the zipline. 🤣 Donald Trunk. Log him up! Log him up! He needs his own Instagram/TikTok channel.
@FreeFallinTrees2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, "log him up" is killing me 🤣 I use rope for ziplines if it is temporary, like 1-3 days for an event because it can weaken with long term UV exposure. Steel cables are best for seasonal or longer term ziplines. There are a couple things to think about with cables. 1. Buy one that can handle 3,000+ lbs at a minimum for adults to use, the longer or higher it is, the stronger you need to cover added forces and increase risk. 2. Trees are only "alive" around the outside inch or 2 of the trunk. It is better to put a large eye bolt through a tree with a big washer on the back, than it is to wrap the outside if it will be installed for more than a few weeks. If it IS going to be short term, use a piece of garden hose on the wire to protect the cambi layer of the tree. 3. Steel does not stretch to give you a slow landing. It goes fast and you will stop when you hit the end 😵. Plan on making a braking system at the end of the line to slow people down. A large block on the line with bungee cords to let it slide and slow works great. Have fun!

Sorry, but there is no 4:1 MA at 3:56. Not even close. That is a HUGE angle between two trees (anchors) and the "focal point" of the load (your pulley/zip line). In climbing this is known as an "American Death Triangle", because this configuration produces a huge DISadvantage, and the forces acting on your anchor points far exceed those of the load at the focal point. This resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries. In order to get the 4:1 that you want, only one tree should be used or the angle between the two trees and the focal point has to be minimal. But given the approximate 90 degree angle of your focal point you actually have a DISadvantage of about 2! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_death_triangle
@FreeFallinTrees6 жыл бұрын
Hi Sergei Gridnev, and thanks for watching. I understand your concerns, however, I am estimating 120° angle from the main line to each leg, making the angle between the legs 60°, well below the critical angle for vector force. In this configuration 100lbs of pull on each leg would produce 173lbs of pull on the main line. There have been a couple of other questions about the forces at work here so I am planning on building a simple model and testing with a load cell, I will share the results in another video even if I am completely wrong. Have a great day!

What about steel cable?
@FreeFallinTrees4 жыл бұрын
Steel cable is great for permanent installations, I've used it a lot. Rope is better for temporary ziplines and remote locations.

Arley Massey there was a short go fund me campaign a couple of years ago, this is one of the go fund me versions. The production version should be released in the next couple of months.

My 10LB chihuahua would NOT make a good test subject.
@FreeFallinTrees5 жыл бұрын
I highly recommend strapping at least 2-3 chihuahuas into the harness to get enough mass, you can also consider altering the diet of your 1 chihuahua to include at least 10 tacos al carbon each day. I have been testing this on myself and can confirm that I am now the size of many chihuahuas. Thanks for watching Joel!

at 3:50 Your MA is actually 3:1, not 2:1. Just saying.
@FreeFallinTrees Жыл бұрын
Good eye, and you are correct, it is 3:1 on that leg of the tie off, but with the other static leg and a 90° bend at the main pulley I only gave it 2:1 on the primary line to be generous.

This is a pretty horrible video. I would never do what you are doing, your talking about safety but your including all these pieces with "rope" and making extra fail points and all kinds of stuff. If you want to be safe you just do it all with thick gauge wire from tree to tree and lock it down with heavy duty hardware. This along with your never ending jokes and the time of the video to how much real content you actually share is pretty ridiculous.
@FreeFallinTrees3 жыл бұрын
This is a pretty horrible comment. My jokes are some of the best the world has ever seen. I once killed a grown man using only laughter, which is proof that its not always the best medicine. Anyway, you do you, i use steel cable for permanent zipline installations, but that would be impractical for single day use, or in a remote location where arborist rope like mine rated at 6,000lbs works fantastic. I appreciate you taking the time out of your day to call out a stranger on the internet for not meeting your standards for humor. 🙄
@steveklick3 жыл бұрын
@@FreeFallinTrees It just got a little ridiculous is all. Ropes are not safe for something like that in general, doesn't matter how much they are rated for and no one cares about rope zip lines. You couldn't even make it right without running into the ground and you really beat a dead horse when talking about what tree is good or not. To use a big sizable tree is all that matters. Honestly your jokes weren't too bad but you kept going with them when they should've been done and with the frequency matched to the actual amount of zipline content you offered shows that you were just basically making a video about yourself being about as ridiculous as you could and then threw some zipline stuff in there. People make jokes in their videos all the time man but its metered to some standard of decency and respect for the viewer, they don't just keep jerking you around with nonsense after nonsense.
