@@Sataka23clips we don't have a national law requiring voter IDs or requiring showing a government-issued photo ID in order to vote. In the US most voting laws are done at the state level. Several states do require them, but for the first almost 200 years of our country they were not required and voting has on the whole been mostly free of voter fraud. The few cases we have had have mostly been committed by Republican-aligned bad actors and the most states that require voter IDs are Republican-led so-called "red states," so clearly it is not working as intended.

Here in Indonesia they changed the election laws to allow the son of Mulyono, the current president, to run for VP despite falling behind in age requirement. They tried to change the age requirement of regional elections for his other son to run as the governor of Jakarta and hamstring the opposition by changing endorsement requirements but student protesters fought back and got the congress to delay the vote on the law.

In Haiti’s 2016 elections, the politicians used to come in the public market and offering the people 1000 gourdes for their Identity numbers(NIF). On the day of the elections, you can find a merchant outside the voting center giving away some soap and some rice just to cast their vote. I had an uncle who almost got killed for that he was supporting a congressman at my native city. The PHTK used this practice too.

@@John-Smith02NK isn’t even colored grey, it’s colored blue. And technically China is closer to a democracy than NK. China technically holds elections, although only a couple people in the CCP are the ones allowed to vote. NK doesn’t have elections at all.

@@TheSignofJonah777 Because Orbán basically tailored the election system to his party, and emptied out / put his cronies to all the (theoretically) independent branches of power. We have a soft dictatorship, much like in the Kádár era. Right now, the orange is the new red, christofascism is the new socialism, but with much more corruption - they are doing much more (outrageously) shamelessly than in the eighties. Orbán is a crime minister, not a prime minister. He is governing exactly as much and as well as you could expect from Donald Trump or any other gangsters.

I disagree on many things with him, but Communists are the people that made the post-communist countries corrupt. People like Orban are the cure to the corruption. He is not weakening the safeguards, he is simply pursuing the will of the people of Hungary, that had voted him in power, because they hated the corrupt post-communist establishment.

Free and fair elections = (1) being chosen - behind the scenes - by an established, powerful, wealthy political party to be the chosen candidate, (2) being able to raise and spend more money than your opponent, (3) convincing the population that it's their vote that counts in this machine.

Aside from ballot box stuffing, many of the strategies outlined can still be present in healthy democracies. IMHO it is an fair and functional legislature that makes the difference between autocratic and representative governance. As such, this piece make clear that eroding the independence (and representation of dissent) within the legislative institutions is what many autocrats spend the majority of thier time and resources upon.

Vote buying is most common method of rigging elections in rural India, from election of local electoral bodies to the national election. And not just in rural parts but nowadays it is even being practiced in medium size cities, districts, and even metropolitan cities like Mumbai. The target voter group very often belongs to economically instable section of society like blue collar workers or people working in unorganised sector.

Though shady, Vote buying is NOT same as rigging.. in a secret ballot, the voters still have a choice whether they will vote for the one giving them freebies or not. Rigging is when the vote is not respected and the dictator always wins

This video also serves as motivation for everyone, especially young people to get involved in their communities and be the positive role model for future generations. Yep, that's one the GOP did. Dems in NY made 3rd parties illegal in 2020. Dems in MD shutdown a bunch of polling places due to covid concerns, 80% of which were in red counties. There are also members in that party who are pushing to pack the supreme court so they can have more control on its rulings. And both parties are still world class gerrymanders. My point is, don't watch this video and try and pick out things that the party you don't like did/does. Watch and try to call it out when any party does it.
