Are you burning the subtitles onto the video permanently, or, do you have Burn In unchecked? I have it unchecked because I don't want the subtitles to always be showing, would like them when needed. Not having any luck. Subtitles not showing, without a Permanent Burn In. Looking for help. Thanks in advance.
@Facultyworkshop4 жыл бұрын
In that case, you need to NOT use the "Burn In" feature under the Subtitles tab. And from the source, select Closed Caption. You will need to rip the video as a video and then extract the captions from the DVD if you can locate it. You should then have 2 files, one with the video and an SRT file with the caption that you can toggle on and off from the video app that you choose. You need to have the video that you rip and the SRT caption file in the same location to be able to toggle the captions on or off. If you can't find the subtitles/captions you can check on websites like subscene[dot]com or moviesubtitles[dot]net

Thank you very much for such pedagogical and clear tutorial. I managed to get subtitles on converted movie after many frustrations before because I didn't know how to put right settings... It was in my case, just important to check only "burn in". And it is nice that you have captions on your video tutorial.One can stop, read again .. You saved me 39 $ for purchasing so much praised MacX videoconverter. But Handbrake is free and very good!

This may sound crazy, but I've already converted quite a few dvd's to mp4's, but the subtitles never copied. Now after watching you video, could I run the mp4's through Handbrake and just add the subtitles now, or do I have to rip the whole thing over? Great instructional video. Thanks very much for sharing your knowledge on this topic.

I got it to burn in subtitles, or CC, I forget. lol But, I downloaded that program, but subtitles don't show up at all, when I don't select burn in...hmmm? I must have missed something. I have a question about what setting/speed I should be using for Kindle Fire HD 8? I have always been using what was already picked out, I have always been using FAST 1080 p30. Would really appreciate your advice. Thanks in advance.

Please make sure that the DVD player on your computer is able to play the type of DVD that you are inserting into it. For example, if you are inserting a regular DVD player and that is what you have on your computer that it should be able to pick it up; however, if you have a regular DVD player on your computer and you are inserting a Blu-ray DVD, it will not be able to recognize it or play it.

Thanks for the tutorial. How does this work for "Forced Only" subtitles (i.e. Movie is in English, but only "foreign subtitles" are displayed)? Thank you
@Facultyworkshop4 жыл бұрын
If I understand your questions correctly, if the movie you are trying to rip already has"Force Only" burn-in subtitles, meaning that you cannot remove the subtitles like with Closed Caption, the video will rip as displayed in the DVD (with the foreign subtitles).

Fantastic video. Thank you for this. One question, though. When you say "A little bit of time", how long did it take to rip your 1:43:XX video with subs?
@Facultyworkshop2 жыл бұрын
This really varies based on how fast and powerful your computer is as well as the type of drive you're using . So everyone's experience will be a little bit different.

Hello! Can I extract the subtitles with Handbrake? I want to have them as an srt/sub file, separate from the movie.
@Facultyworkshop Жыл бұрын
Not really. I've tested it out and it does not work. However, what you could do is use Subtitle Edit. You can rip a DVD with subtitles using Handbrake, but do not use the "burn-in" option, use the default option instead. Once ripped, then add the ripped file to Subtitle Edit and then select File>Import (subtitles from video)... You can also try extracting the subtitles with Subtitle Edit directly from the DVD, but I have not found that option to be reliable or successful. You can get the Substitle Edit software at: github.com/SubtitleEdit/subtitleedit/releases

Holy fuck, i returned to this video because My dad handed me 10 yeard old dvds with old videos of me and my sister which were made in a very wierd format (they had chapters and menus and stuff, plus they were originally converted from VHS) and it allowed me to turn those old memories into mp4 files. While other programs broke down with it Handbreak cleanly created the video file!

I don't know, I check the 'burn in' option but the subtitles doesn't show when I play the movie and only english is available when I rightclick the video even tho I chose another language
@Facultyworkshop2 жыл бұрын
I believe you can only do a burning for one language. If you're trying to play the video with multiple options for languages, then you don't want to do a burn-in. You'll need to rip the video and then have the subtitle files for each language in the same folder as the video.

You need to make sure that when you're extracting the video file you are extracting it at the highest quality available to you. Make sure that your default is not set to a lower resolution.

21jan16: Mostly worked as you instruct but when I tried to turn on the Subtitle, which I selected, in VLC instead it displayed the Chapter #. I tried this 3 times trying to get what I'm used to seeing when I play the DVD. Pass 3 is in progress now, after having turned off "Add Chapter markers" and adding all the subtitled tracks on the DVD, burning in the EN track. I will edit this comment when completed. _Ed.: The total time to rip to the default container Handbrake assigns it, an m4v, fine, whatever, takes app work time of about 25 min for a 4 hr opera. Ok, with the EN subtitle track "burned in" I am finally seeing the English Subtitle forced on screen below the DE text--good! However, though I selected "All other subtitle tracks" and there was only one other, FR, in VLC, Subtitles it displays "Disabled" though the EN sub is showing, and it shows the 2d sub track, FR, as "Track 1." lol Adventures in ripping. Anyway, I at least have what I do need. Big thanks for your tutorial. _*_*PS:*_*_ Do you know how to resize the HB app window without it collapsing entirely to the Taskbar and then refusing to Maximize (R-click on Minimized label on Taskbar offers only to Unpin from Taskbar or Close Window)? I went to the Community Forum for help and others have complained about this bug, but so far, I see no actual fix offered. If not, no worries. Am on Win10 x64 desktop, standard screen resolution, tv flat screen monitor._

Thanks SO MUCH for this tip! I already knew how to rip with Handbrake but could never figure out this feature. I work in education and all videos used in classes must have subtitles or CC. Question: do you know how to get all segments on the DVD to rip at once with CC or subtitles included? I have many DVD's that came with textbooks, and I have to rip them one segment at a time or the captioning won't be there, and some have over 30 segments! Am I missing something? Again, thanks! This tip is a life saver!
@Facultyworkshop5 жыл бұрын
I ran into the same issue as well. I have not figured out a way to do multiple segments either. I think one option might be to add the segments to the que.

I have successfully copied files with subtitles however, i'm trying to copy my 'Bourne Identity ' movie. At approx 10 mins into the movie there is about 1 minute of German that i can't get the subtitles to work on. I've tried a number of programs, but none of them work. I've written to burning programmers but either don't get an answer or they say yes it can do it.... but doesnt. Star Wars, where Jabba The Hut speaks also doesn't give me subtitles in the copy. short of continuing to buy programs, do you have any suggestion on how to burn these type of movies with subtitles. why do most work,and others not?

+JDIRacerMMO I'm not sure what you mean by, "just clicking default". Are the subtitles appearing or not at all? You can't control the location of the subtitles using HandBrake, it will display where it was originally set.

I know how to burn in the caption. I also know how to choose audio ch 2 if I am after the director's commentary. What I need help with is how to put a caption on director's commentary. The resulting output file I get is director's commentary but caption is that of main movie feature. How can I display burn caption of director's commentary? Please help.
@Facultyworkshop7 жыл бұрын
That is a tough one and I haven't tried it. If I had to do it my approach would be to: 1. Rip the DVD without captions 2. Use a software like SubRip that extracts the subtitles from the video and I would try to extract only the director's commentary 3. If I am successful in accomplishing step 2, which is a big IF, I would then take the SRT caption file and use another software like mkvmerge to "mux" the captions with the video or simply use Handbrake to add and burn the captions into the video. Its a multi-step process with 2-4 softwares, but no gaurantee that it will work, but you can always experiment. If you do try, I'd be interested to hear your results.

Do you know if the DVD that you are attempting to rip includes captions or subtitles for sure?? If it doesn't you will need to get the captions, if available, as a SRT file online and then import it into HandBrake. You can find subtitles at websites like: www.moviesubtitles.org or subscene.com Are you working with a DVD or BluRay?
@daphneleung1035 жыл бұрын
can you do the opposite? the video came with sub. can I make it disappear?

If they are burned in you won't be able to remove them. If they are in an mkv file, you might be able to turn them on in the video pleyer.
