Rooting dragon fruit stems is so easy. I just put all of them into a pot, pour some potting mix in and keep it in a warm shady area without watering the pot. In about 6-7 weeks, all the cuttings have roots. I guess you are trying to get more roots and get them quickly. But it is not worth it. Heat is the key. If you keep the pot in a warm area or try heat mat during cold seson, there will be plenty of roots. To avoid the wet-feet problem with using normal soil mix, just mix coarse sand and perlite into the garden mix. Use more of this well-drained mix at the bottom of the pot. The top of the pot can have a bit more moisture using vermiculite instead of perlite.

I got a bunch of American beauty cuttings in October, saw a video from a guy from India who roots his cuttings in water and adds a piece of aloe to the water. Search on the web and found that aloe vera is good for stimulating root grow in many plants. I have a lot of aloe plants so decided to try, I cut a piece about one inch long, removed the skin and added it to the water. Changed the water a few days later because there's a lot of mosquitoes where I live but I left the aloe on it. Two weeks later all the cuttings had roots, some of them even have secondary ones. So if you can't get root hormones where you live or want a more natural alternative then aloe works.

I do that too. I root everything, but not in aloe water, I stick the plants I want to root directly into a piece of fresh aloe leaf, right in the middle where the gel is and bury it in soil that way. No rooting hormon required. Everything gets roots with this method really fast and it's free because aloe multiplies fast and there is never a shortage of supply.

Very useful video (and comments). I'm a beginner and I learned (a) I've been wasting soil nutrients by watering in un-rooted cuttings directly into the soil and they've been getting "the tail end of the nutrients" in the soil. Thank you for that tip. Also, (b) I've been scorching my cuttings by having them in direct sun too early. Thanks for the tips! Excellent video and channel. Have subscribed.

Water rooting big stem cuts is best. I add general hydroponics Diamond Nectar about 1 tsp to pint of water and I also add a aerator ball & air pump to the water to keep h20 oxygenated. I’m getting roots about 3-5 days flesh cuts I let callus for 3/4 days and then add to water and about a wk n roots maybe a few more days. Tried just sitting tips in dirt like sum others do but takes two/3 wks to roots 😉

BTW, please try this as you are in a warm season. I am in Sydney and it's getting a bit colder (late autumn) so what I am doing might not work. Please try to root and graft the stems at the same time. The idea is that you should be able to graft different varieties on unrooted stems and root them at the same time. This will save a lot of time. I have just done a bunch of grafts and root them at the same time. In a few weeks I can report the outcome. I expect success because grafting dragon fruit plants is so easy. I recently get 100% in my first attempt! But it's getting cold in my part of the world now so I keep the root&graft stems inside at a window sill for them to get the warmth inside the house.

Hi I am excited to find your channel and I just subscribed! I am 3 months shy of being 80 years old, live in Connecticut, United States and have three different cuttings of three different varieties of dragon fruit that I'm going to root. I just ordered the Hormex #8 and will be good to go as soon as it gets here. I bought these three cuttings primarily to graft, Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Easter cactus into the dragon fruit. These plants will all be grown indoors. I can probably put them out doors in June, July, and August, but anything other than that I think it might be too cold for them. After rooting and planting my cuttings in soil, how long do you suggest I wait till I do the grafting? Thank you so much for all your interesting and helpful videos. Tom

Trees in general prefer the soil not to be dry. As long as you're not using compost based soil, you won't overwater. Compost in the soil causes root rot.
