Awesome demonstration, very grateful for you to take the time to explain the whole process this really helps me. I am excited to try your techniques. I already have most of the supplies mentioned, items heat mat, hormones but need to gather the rest. I fortunately have a supply where I can take cuttings from. Looking back I still remember when I was young watching my dad technique how he would take & start the process of fig cuttings. As Im alot older I should of paid alot more attention to what he was showing me. Thank You for sharing your knowledge We really appreciate you.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge in such a methodical way. What do you do for cuttings that just rooted before the normal dormancy season? Do you let them stay up or go dormant?
@sweetfigs12 ай бұрын
i did this test last season, i rooted some trees on september and let them stay outside(im in 9b so my winters are not that cold) if you get hard winters put them in the garage, they went dormant and exploded growing on spring this year.

Great video, filled in the blanks to so many questions. One thing I'm not clear on. Is the round flat surface of the cutting edge at the top covered with parafilm? I didn't see that overlap.
@sweetfigs1Ай бұрын
@@monabudden9952 yes, you should stretch it at the top so its fully covered, some people just cover the top, as that is the open wound where moisture is lost

I live in Puerto Rico and am beginning to learn about figs. Very good and to the point presentation. Can you recommend me which varieties would be good for PR and where can I order them? I read about Calderona and would like to get some cuttings if they are a good choice for the tropics. Thanks.
@sweetfigs14 ай бұрын
the problem with tropics is the rain in summer, i would recommend smith, celeste, violet the bordeaux, i would not recommend big figs like calderona as these will split in the rain very easily, try checking your local nurseries to see if they have any figs available, most sellers in USA do not sale to PR as there are some country rules for organic and plants.

Excellent presentation thank you. Two questions. First some suggest rooting cuttings in shade or even no light until there's the first top growth. Do you have an opinion. Second, when can one remove the cuttings from the bottom heat.
@sweetfigs1Ай бұрын
@@t-bone6467 great questions, cuttings will need light when there are leaves, i have rooted cuttings in the summer too in the shade but not in full darkness and they rooted without issues, i believe that temperature is the most important factor, for the second question, keeping a constant temperature will ensure the cuttings continue to grow 75-80 will keep their metabolism up
@t-bone6467Ай бұрын
@sweetfigs1 ok so if i understand you do not support the idea that for a cutting to grow roots first, cutting should be in the dark so as to not risk stimulating leaf growth from light before root growth occurs.
@sweetfigs1Ай бұрын
@@t-bone6467 the ideal cutting will grow some roots and start putting leaves too, i do not think you need to have your cuttings in full darkness for them to root, but all cuttings are different.

You are really good and thorough! I do fig pops because they take up a lot less space. If sharpie size, I use ziplock snack size, and a lot of cuttings can be put in your bin. With your parafilm wrapped figs, I don't think you need to worry about humidity as that is the purpose of the tape. I uppot from snack size to the clear quart container and then to 3 gal or 5 gal. Just different was of doing things.. I really enjoyed your instructive video... where did you suggest getting good cuttings?
@sweetfigs1 Жыл бұрын
i agree, im using smaller grow bags that take less space, but i have to give it a try to the fig pops, and yes if you use the tape humidity is not that important, i use the lid so the soil doesn't dry too fast, i buy them from fig big and profigusa.com, thank for the feedback!
@bosquebear1 Жыл бұрын
@@sweetfigs1 the figpops don't dry out because they don't have an open top so the mix is not exposed to air but enclosed in plastic.. The top of the cutting sticking out is protected from drying out by the parafilm... hence, no need for the top cover and high humidity with the problems that brings. When the leaves pop out, they get used to lower humidity and do not need hardened off later. When lots of roots are growing and leaves are growing, if I see them getting dry, I simple snip off a little of the corners of the pops and set them in a container with 1/4" of water or so and it soaks up from the bottom... just don't put enough to make it too wet. Again, you are doing good work and are a good teacher.

I can get roots like 100% of the time, the problem is that I only get leaves like 75%. What can I do to make those leaves come out after rooting?
@sweetfigs15 ай бұрын
great question, i think the secret is to root a cutting with well develop buds, some cuttings have very small or undeveloped buds, which makes the leafing more difficult and avoid over watering, as the cutting can grow roots and these can rot due to over watering and no leaves will come out as the cutting died.
@JJr-ce3vv3 ай бұрын
Make sure to cut the branches longer enough to have at least 3 healthy nodes for leave buds to develop.
@FC2ESWS3 ай бұрын
@@JJr-ce3vv Yeah sometimes the cuttings I buy only have 3 nodes even though they are like 8-10 inches. Long internodes in between. I do prefer shorter woody cuttings with tons of nodes.

What media are you rooting the cuttings in? If it's inert like Iike coco coir, perlite etc, perhaps consider a very diluted fertilizer once roots establish since inert has no nutrients.
