In this video Rob describes how to make plant cuttings. He'll discuss rooting hormones, how to make the cuttings, how to tell if the cutting is rooting properly and the process.

This is a really nice video. No long dramatic opening sequence, no music, very nice calm presentation and very complete ... more complete than any other rooting video I've come across. But, wow, the Dip and Grow stuff is $54 bucks on Amazon!

Great video with lots of descriptive information, and the whys behind things like an angle cut v. straight cut. I have never heard of cleaning the tools with alcohol before using them, however it makes good sense as a preventative. I have two 3' black maple tree cuttings that I took from near the bottom of the mother tree today, and I will be anxious to see how the do with this advice. I already have the rooting powder, however, I was interested to learn to pour it out into a separate container before I use it, to avoid any cross-contamination from one cutting to another within the main container. I also never thought about gently inspecting to see if the roots are growing, which is another great tip! Thanks very much for lots of great advice! :)

the lower cut is in an angle because we need more area in contact with the soil, the uper cut is in horizontal angle because the oposit reason, less area in contact with the air, less humidity lost ;)

Nice video! I prefer to use a quick dip in a jar of locally produced natural honey (not supermarket corn syrup ones!) instead of rooting hormone. It is more natural and has given me better results. Why not check if you have a local bee keeper and test it out for yourself or even better learn to keep bees.

Thank you for this excellent video!! I was wondering which type of cutting (hardwood, semi-hardwood, or softwood) has the highest success rate?? And, I noticed your semi-hardwood and softwood cuttings in the video were very short... is there a reason for that, or can these cuttings be taller and still root successfully??
@chrishernandez92772 жыл бұрын
I know you asked a while back but as far as I know it depends on the species, every tree has a preference and it’s just really trial and error on your part, try all of them and see what works best for the type of tree you want:)

I've read you never need something longer than 75mm with softwood cuttings, usually 50mm

I'm wanting to root some willow cuttings I have. They are all softwood, with buds. Seeing as it's willow, do I need rooting hormone (aren't they kind of made of it?). Thanks.
@haunce9 жыл бұрын
LL Mcbee I have propagated willow w/o hormone. Just make sure you keep them in a humid environment until they root. One time I chopped down a willow and left some of the logs on the ground...even they rooted and sprouted in about two months.

hi, Has anyone ever successfully got Blue Spruce cuttings to grow? I've tried everything from air layering to special hydroponic setups to various "sprouting soils". I've tried everything from small twigs to large branches and various rooting compounds and attempted rooting at different times of the year. I'm close - I've had them remain alive, supple and green for 6 to 8 months, but I've never been able to get one to root at all. Any suggestions? The cuttings have all been taken from a very large old Blue Spruce in my yard so I know its not a problem of elevation. Thank you.

for those of you who don't have the rooting hormone, you can replace it with cinnamon.
@savagealizugel80657 жыл бұрын
Saurya Shrestha I didn't know that. Cheers. I use honey with fairly consistent results.
@cruiser97eric16 жыл бұрын
For those who don't have rooting hormone, cinnamon, or honey, countless cuttings of many different species have been rooted using nothing at all. People were rooting cuttings long before the fancy hormones became available to purchase.
@marztar6 жыл бұрын
lol cruiser true but then that's leaving it all to chance. the key point of these added components is that human intelligence discovers how a thing actually happens and then by isolating the chemical responsible we can then replicate that behaviour with limited fail rates.

can I take cuttings from the little saplings that are shooting up from the bottom of a dead tree and root them?
@poguemahone10319 жыл бұрын
Brandy Leblanc You should be able to root those basal shoots fine. Also, as far as the powdered rooting hormone goes, I'll either dampen the stripped end of the cutting and powder it afterward, or even mix a little water into a small amount of rooting hormone powder to make a paste that I can "paint" onto the bottom and the lower nodes.
@taitjones63105 жыл бұрын
Use a pencil or dowel (or a stick) to make the hole. Then place cutting in hole.
@taitjones63105 жыл бұрын
@@JABCO_TX strip the lower leaves off the shoots, then bury the rest of the stump. Roots will grow from the lower parts of the shoots, and next year you can dig them up and divide them.
