@@jenjohnson4613 Wondering the same thing on when to plant in the ground! I have a clipping from a rose bush my grandma has. I rooted it like this, don't have a greenhouse, put it on the side of my house that gets light all day long, but no direct sun...it's doing great...but wondering as the summer moves along, when is the best time to plant in the ground? Some say wait and winter it, some say August, some say the fall...hmmm!

My grandma took a cutting from her grandmother when she married my grandfather after WW2. He passed away couple years ago, and she is now 91. I have the chance to clone her roses and gift them to the rest of the family. I'm going to clone twice as many as i can, and share them with my massive family. Thanks for the tips and tricks. I just want to preserve that legacy. For some reason, I find great value in that. Thanks for the hard work and wisdom. This plant is over 100 years old, and I'd hate to see it fade away.

I have a Rose that my Grandmother grew outside her back door. She Passed away in the 70's and my mom and aunt got it started at their homes. My mom passed in 2012 and when she did I got the Rose started and it now grows at my home. My aunt passed away last year at the age of 90 but somewhere over the years the bush she got started died off. I posted photos of the rose on FB this year and my sister and three of my cousins have asked me to get it started for them to grow at their homes. I have No idea what the rose's original name was but my grandmother's name was Doris so I'm thinking I may call it Doris from here on out. Good luck with your rose I hope you are able to get it started!

Mike, I'm just seeing this and how excited I was to see it. My mother-in-law - way back in 1968 - taught me about rooting rose cuttings. She simply would trim the branch as you did, trim the thorns, dip it in the power root tone and "stick it in the ground with a jar over it". She had a spot just outside her kitchen door where her "babies started". She would watch the day, and if it was cloudy and coolish, she'd leave the jar as it was. If it was bright sunshine, she'd raise the jar on flat stones or such until nightfall. It never failed. Two years ago, I discovered an ancient climbing rose in our bushes, totally overgrown with monkey grass and such. I was thrilled! I dug it up, placed it in a showy spot and kept it watered. It grew wonderfully last year, no flowers, but great bush development. This year, right now, it's covered in buds. And it has the most wonderful "old climbing rose" scent. As the flowers fade, I will try some transplants...because...who ever has "enough"?? Thank you for your video!

This was so unbelievably helpful! I tried this with one of our more rare park-roses, and it worked like a charm! I even went as far as to try this method with other kinds of cuttings, like Honeysuckle, and they too rooted very quickly. I even planted the latter in a transparent orchid pot just to see the roots develop, and they were visible within 2 weeks!

The key is rooting hormone. After removing the thorns, I go even further by lightly scaping the lower end of the stem to encourage more roots from the "wound". Also, I have made new plants by planting them directly into the ground and not using a plastic cover. Here in NY state, I have done this in the fall when weather is not hot anymore and it is relatively cool, but still weeks from a frost. By spring, the cutting is established and has new growth sprouting. Everyone should try to make cuttings of roses, especially if you have an heirloom rose bush! 🌹

Thanks for mentioning that about the cuttings in fall. Once the wood is more hardened off, it can hold up well without as much humidity. I agree, everyone should be doing this!

You guys who freak out over plants being treated in such a manner should watch some videos on bonsai. You should see the way you can split trees in half and do the same with their root balls to create two trees and other such extreme operations. I know some plants are more sensitive than others but most can take a whole lot of 'abuse' and just go on thriving. You just need to know what a plant can't handle so you don't cross that threshold. Your videos are great by the way. Thanks. May Christ Jesus bless and keep you and yours.

In 1978, for my 18th birthday, my father gave me a grandiflora rose bush. It has been transplanted a handful of times and is in our flowerbed at our current house. Last year, I rooted a cutting from it using your method, Mike. Two weeks ago, I planted the successful, first attempted propagation of my grandiflora Queen Elizabeth rose bush in the front flowerbed! On that day I took 3 more cuttings from the original because I want to give some to my daughter and son-in-law for their new home. More success, please! Thank you, Mr. Kincaid. Thank you so much for this video! This is literally the only video I found on rose cuttings that actually shows how to make the cuttings! Also, it's so great to see you get your kiddos involved. My daughter also really enjoys helping to take care of our plants. Just one question for you - how do you over-winter those roses? Do you bring them indoors? Do you plant them in the ground in fall? How do they stand up to winter?
@MikeKincaid79
@MikeKincaid79 3 жыл бұрын
So glad you enjoyed the video! I just leave these roses in my hoophouse through the winter. It's not heated and both ends are open so they go dormant and freeze hard as a rock. As long as the plants you're working with are cold hardy to your area, you should be ok leaving them outside. If you live in an exceptionally cold climate then you can put them in a shed or garage for protection but keep the soil moist.

FYI: They generally say to use a pencil to make your hole for your cutting so you don’t knock off the root hormone powder. Excellent video that I really enjoyed because it has literally been 25 years since I last did rose cuttings in Boston & ironically it was with purple roses. I was doing Lagerfeld, Heirloom, & Sterling Silver if my memory is correct. Lol. I was trying to cross some too, but we had an issue with deer as well. Lol. Thanks for the video! You have excellent speaking skills, articulate & enunciate well for this hearing impaired person, & are knowledgeable.
