How to Root the LG V30 US998 with Magisk (Tutorial)

This is a full tutorial on how to root the LG V30, specifically for the US998, though this should also work with the H930 and varieties other than the H932 - do NOT attempt this on the H932 as further steps are required.
The result of this tutorial is the phone running the latest official Android 9 Pie firmware rooted with Magisk. The V30 passes safety net :). I have been using a rooted LG V30 as my personal device for multiple months, and I have no bugs to report - everything is completely stable.
Note: do not use Pie firmware if you intend to flash AOSP/Lineage Oreo roms in the future - there are multiple known bugs.

Worked wonderfully! I bought an unlocked V30+ on ebay, then followed this guide. Note: My version was the Unlocked LS998 (Sprint) version. This guide WILL WORK as long as you FOLLOW all instructions.

Hey, thanks for the guide. If i want to try AOSP android 12 first, and then if i'm not satisfied with it settle with stock Pie, which would be the right steps? I'm asking because you mentioned to not use Pie firmware if you intend to flash AOSP. P.s. i'm on stock Nougat.

No. You need to downgrade to Nougat for this to work. The steps are the same as the video, you need H933 Nougat firmware though.

On windows 11 fastboot commands don't work... After i ADB REBOOT BOOTLOADER. the flash command to install twrp just stops at waiting for device

So question, I downloaded your MEGA files but the zip does not have a "platform-tools" folder, so when I run adb, fastboot or and other commands in cmd it doesn't recognize them. Where do I get those files?

That platform tools folder is ADB, try downloading a different version of ADB (refer to the WTF root tutorial on QXDA) I had the same issue

If you're stuck on waiting for device then it's your drivers, you need to go update drivers

As soon as i done the adb reboot bootloader the phone goes into the black screen with the commands but the phone disconnects from the PC and does not reconnect so it stuck on the screen and the CMD just says waiting for device but will not reconnect till i restart the phone what should i do with that problem. And yes i try multiple cables still nothing. Never mind i fixed it with a lot of messing around end up installing android studio and installing all the parts and drivers from their for android 8 as all others i found did not work think it was down to google drivers not on windows 10 so install them from android studio and now works so if anyone else has this problem that is what worked for me.

Hello when I go to run SetDev as administrator I get a cmd window that states this. A subdirectory or file C:\Program Files (86)\LG Electronics\LGUP\model\common already exists Access is denied. That is a very odd issue. My best guess would be reinstall LG UP and make sure your windows account has administrator privilege.

Alright, so could have totally just done my research beforehand, but I'm a total amateur, so yeah, my bad. I downloaded the Full ADB from Step 3 in the link to the WTF steps you gave us, and then needed to make sure that I copied both the new_unlock.bin and the TWRP.img into that platform-tools folder I just downloaded, which was also stated in the WTF steps, so thank you for including that link, it was super helpful, as was your walkthrough. LS998 sprint lgv30/ lgv30+ users: This worked for me and I'm now running root on US998. You have to flash to nougat, then flash to oreo, then install TWRP, then root. When I was on LGUP it wouldn't work on the "Refurbish" option for the first flash. For flashing to nougat (the first flash) you have to select dll partition. After that it worked but put my phone in a boot loop at first. I panicked, but then came across this video>> kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6WvpnaqpJaprc0 that worked for me and I continued the process from there. When flashing to oreo (the second flash) I selected the Refurbish option on LGUP. You have to follow the directions EXACTLY, and it's a bit confusing if you're not used to this kind of stuff, but this absolutely works! This video in combination with the WTF tutorial helped me figure out the confusing parts. Thank you!

Hey I'm getting an error when trying to flash the new_unlock.bin Error is: FAILED (Write to device failed (Invalid Argument)) fastboot: error: Command failed I've tried several different USB cables, bought new ones, used all the USB ports on my PC and still the same issue. Same with using different versions of ADB and reinstalling the drivers. I've made sure the environment variables are also set correctly. I'm totally lost, if you have any idea on what's going on, that'd be great.

Are you sure your device is the US998? Try running opening the command prompt as administrator if you haven't already.

@@RipCityBassWorks Yes, I've for sure confirmed the device software is US998 and tried running CMD as Admin as well. If I run the command - fastboot devices, then the device will show up, so I know there's an active connection while the device is in bootloader mode. It's just once I'm there, it won't let me write any commands to it. I have the exact US99820b Software version installed (Pre July 2018 patch) which I upgraded to from Nougat (followed from the XDA thread). I just can't tell what I'm missing x.x
