Rotoscoping using Rotobrush version 2.0 is really simple, but it can be intimidating if you've never done it before. But in this tutorial I demonstrate the basics of rotoscoping, and how easy it can be. This tutorial assumes you have a basic understanding of After Effects, and have knowledge of layers, compositions, and simple effects.

Whenever I rotoscope, freeze it and then have to unfreeze it to fix something, AE will mess up rotoscope on other frames that I didn't touch or wanted to fix. Any tips on how to avoid that? It feels like if I don't get it right in the first place, I'm gonna have a lot of trouble retouching other frames.

Did you review the propagated result of your rotoscope by reviewing the result after the initial frame, before using the Freeze feature? If its not correct in the beginning when you freeze it, it wont give the effect the correct information The initial strokes inform Roto Brush how to continue propagating the matte through the shot.

Good question - rotoscoping is different from chroma keying - with rotoscoping there’s no green background, you’re simply isolating parts of a normal video clip - versus chroma keying where the subject is filmed against a green screen and brought into post production to key

To create a similar effect you can use the stroke effect or you can use the fill effect and simple choker to expand the edges - I believe I used that to create that effect

Thanks for watching - in your export settings make sure the “channels” option is RGB+Alpha - this will most likely be a QuickTime Mov file.

Hi thanks for watching - I'd be happy to help you troubleshoot the issue with rotoscoping in After Effects. Here are a few things you can check: 1. Make sure you have selected the layer you want to apply rotoscoping to. You can do this by clicking on the layer in the timeline panel. 2. Check the brush settings. Ensure that the brush size is appropriate for the detail you want to capture, and that the opacity and hardness are set correctly. 3. Verify that you are using the Roto Brush tool specifically for rotoscoping. It's located in the toolbar or can be accessed by pressing the B key.

There is also a message in yellow displayed at the bottom that informs me that the frame rate does not match or a footage with frames was found, I need to set the composition to 60.01 fps

Question PLEASE! None in the 20 videos i saw probably explains how to unfreeze and correct the mask again. When i try to do it i have issues and lose the progress of the mask. And can we only do 4 seconds at a time? And if so why does no one mention that? Thank you

I think a lot of it has to do with the processing speed of your computer. Try changing the ram settings in after effects and see if that makes any difference. You should just be able to pick up where you left off when unfreezing.

Make sure your brush size is precise enough to select the subject and also making sure that the shot has enough contrast if it’s too dark or too contrasty the roto might not pick it up. Also check your frame rate make sure there’s not an error there with a frame rate discrepancy

You're most likely not rendering it out with the included alpha channel - In your render settings in After Effects make sure your file is a quicktime file - I usually set my video codec set to "Animation" and change "channels" from "RGB" to "RGB+Alpha" this will keep the transparent background. When I draw the mask, it does NOT show a green crosshair just a green blob and I can't shrink or expand it. It also does nothing when I draw it, it just disappears.

Check your brush size and hardness: One possibility is that your brush size and/or hardness are set too high, which could cause your strokes to appear as a solid blob instead of a crosshair. Try adjusting your brush size and hardness to see if that helps. Also make sure that your footage matches your project settings in terms of resolution and frame rate

Don’t worry it’s common! It takes a lot of patience, try using the Brush Size option to select the size of your brush stroke and the Brush Strength option to modify the intensity of your stroke. Also make sure the foreground and background colors of your footage are well separated and you have a good contrast between the two, if your clip isn’t good to begin with, rotobrush won’t work too well. For a single subject in the front this is cool ... Try just a 3-piece band the drum kit gets its stands going transparent on/off(u must go almost frame by frame)...not there yet AI based apps same deal ... The oldie green background seems the only way 4 me
