Thanks for the jet boat tips I will be going out soon on the Sandy river for my first steelhead trip of the year in my used 16' Smokercraft sled with a 90hp Mercury jet pump motor.

Best tip of this video was how to properly hitch the boat trailer to the truck. I've been doing wrong all these years.

Just came across your page , nice to see a local give some awesome advice. I’m from the area too and saving up for my jet boat that I really want. I used to have a bayliner prop boat but sold it many years ago and now missing the water like crazy . When I get mine maybe we link up and head out to the water . I live about a mile from the Potomac.

Do you use a spot lock trolling motor? Or are you anchoring?

Greetings and thanks for the video information. I just thought of a crucial decision-making question. But first let me give you some entail of the weight set-up/distribution in the boat: It has a heavy (130 lb give or take) 25 Horsepower Mercury Jet drive 2-Stroke Outboard, AGM Gel Optimum Bluetop cranking battery, and (185 lb) me in the back of the jon boat The front has a 55 lb thrust Motorguide (about 30+ lbs) trolling motor, two heavy Duracell deep cycle batteries, a 5.5 gallon fuel tank, a couple of anchors (37 lbs total ), etc. (And eventually I may add front and rear decking) I thought to put Nauticus trim tabs on my 14 foot jon boat to help it come on plane even better. But if I install the trim tabs, will the stern/transom be raised too high out of water and cause too much air to get sucked in the intake of the jet drive?? The white caps/big chop I endured last night coming across the main lake doing 19 mph made me think about this!!😆😅

Summer the river levels get low out here in Ohio. So I bought an airboat an old air boat 350 Chevrolet engine direct drive to the 72 inch propeller.... and it's bad ass It I'lll take you smooth up stream and so an 8th of an inch of water is you'll need on plane. to wear a kayak or a canoe drags on the bottom... And literally have to get out to move the boat to deeper water.. no problem with an airboat...

Honestly that sounds dope !! If it does get super shallow I’ll pull out the kayak

Id suggest getting a canoe for 10 years and learn how to read a river. Then start with a 40 or 60 hp jet rig.

@@scottsmith6571 I started with a 17' Grumman canoe. I bounced that thing of so many rocks over the years, still have it! I am a big fan of Alweld boats. I currently run a Alweld 1856 JC with a 225 yamaha jet on it. There is a learning curve to a flat bottom jet, lots of sliding due to no prop in the water and flat bottom.

@@Ajaxaxxess hell yeah dude fun stuff, I got a 1750 smoker craft sportsman with a Yamaha 60/40 and she does 30mph with me and my girlfriend and a shit ton of fishing gear. I want to downsize to a 14 or 16ft, don’t really need that much room and the 1448 would be fast

Most of what you have there are shelves, the big question would be have you ever had your boat down on the lower Monocacy, from the aquaduct up past the 28 bridge?

@@WildernessPursuits301 nice, my old stomping grounds was on the upper section of the river, between Keysville/Rocky Ridge and Woodsboro. We used prop boats and jet skis above the dam at Rocky Ridge. My plan is to purchase. Jet powered jon boat later this year and use it on the lower section of the river for fishing and hunting.

I’ve got a 16ft bass tracker with a Mercury 2 stroke 35hp. Deck and all is aluminum, do you think I would be extremely unhappy converting it to a jet with my current powerhead? I can pick the jet up cheap to convert it vs finding a 60/40 or the like. Thanks in advance

I don't understand why anyone would want to run a propeller driven boat. A jet may go over dead head logs in slow moving rivers that don't have current strong enough for them to show. Also if you are fishing a new lake, traveling a high speed, I would rather be in a boat with a jet. Many Mn. lakes have rocks structure just under the surface that a jet will pass over and a prop will not.

Big waves pull jets out of the water, they cavitate and lose power. Props give more hp the the propulsive device than jets and are more economical. The both have their areas to shine for sure. I own both prop and jet for that reason.

The ocean, the bay, rough bar crossings. We had a police department get a jet, they went back to an inboard simply because they had way too many problems with marine plant life. The other problem being the pump is always pumping so they’re either in forward or reverse even with your throttle at neutral. This makes holding a steady position a bit difficult for water rescue that are easy enough with a prop by just returning to neutral. Everything has pros and cons, but every user is different. Personally I love having twin engines for handling purposes, I know lots of people who would rather not mess with it. I just dock with the engine only and don’t have to mess with my steering. Lots of people really hate that and just want one huge engine.
