What's the Deal with Outboard Jet Engines?
In this video I go into a few of the details of an outboard jet engine. What is and outboard jet? Why you might want an outboard jet, and why you might not want an outboard jet engine. Outboard jet engines are very specific tools that work very well in certain conditions but not so well in others.

Alvin, great info. I have an outboard I picked up at auction I might see if that place in Cali makes one for. I'm not really trying to get up on plane. Heck, I not even trying to go fast. I'm building a tiny pontoon overnighter out of cardboard, 2 part boat foam and fiberglass. Just something lightweight I can load in the back of the pickup and assemble near the ramp and launch. I don't really want much on it in terms of structure. I've found an inflatable tent that I want to use for camping on the water. I do want to make a shade awning and have some chair mounts that can click in/out of place for different configurations, a place to cook and a dometic cooler style refrigerator or just take a cooler....I dunno still thinking about that one but it'll have a solar panel on the awning for fridge, cook plate, tunes, fish finder and phone. I just don't need anything over 5-10 hp. I'm seeing some 6.5 HP outboard jets out of South America but the shipping is just as much as the motor. Do you know of any place that sells just the down shaft and lower unit so I can just go buy a lawn mower engine from harbor freight? That would be awesome. I called Texas Parks and Wildlife to ask them what would be the procedure for titles for a combination boat/trailer, as in the boat and trailer are one. I just originally wanted to make a boat with retractable wheels. After being shuffled around to different offices they have no clue how to make that happen. They don't seem to understand why someone would want to do that. I guess convenient isn't in their vocabulary. Neither is cost effectiveness. Minus the motor I could've built that boat for the price of the trailer alone....but noooo.....guvment....ugh. Any thoughts? P.S. this is a guy, I'm using my wife's account. Mine was deleted for loving the constitution too much. Cheers, Brian

Here on the current river in southeast Mo it's hard to find a prop running around. I'm 36 and its been that way since I was knee high. Crystal clear spring water of about 64 degrees year around. Fun watching the rocky bottom go by in the skinny areas. Always thought the naturally cool water was good for an outboard.

Great explanation, we fish the Missouri quite a bit and run a jet drive and when it gets real weedy in the summer it’s a problem. But as you said you just stop more to clear the intake not a big deal . And in this case the benefits out weight the negatives. Thanks

Nice video Alvin! I like my jet drive, but agree with your compromises. One other downside I've found is the jet drives are harder to steer at slow speeds. Some of the places I fish have crowded boat launches and I'm always banging into something or someone with a jet drive. It's much easier in my prop boat.

Own a 25hp Mercury Jet attached to a 1648 Lowe Aura. Total weight is 580 lbs with full tank of gas. Light enough to dry launch off a 6 foot embankment and light enough to wench back up. No ramp needed. Runs 20 mph with just me (175 lbs) and gear down to a few inches of water. Can fish 3 comfortably in water 12 inches or more. Being able to dry launch and drag the boat to the water opens up areas most can never fish. In Ohio you are not trespassing if you are on navigable water. Has also seen it's share of ducks.

Alvin... I like your style! Sorry to bug you with a question that only I can probably answer, but here it is. I live in North Idaho. It's a land of deep mountain lakes and rivers, which run shallow in the summer. With my daughter just now turning 13, I have a sense of urgency to get on the water with her (first time boat owner here.) I'm soon to purchase a high quality inflatable (16') which is large enough to accommodate me, my wife, our daughter, and a dog. Plus, it fits my budget and is super versatile. I'm faced with a decision between a 30hp Mercury outboard prop and a 60/40 Mercury JET, both of which are rated for the vessel and provided as options by the manufacturer, who is based in Canada. With the help of people like you, I understand the primary differences, and am leaning towards the prop. In the back of my mind though, I see myself getting perhaps bored on a lake and wanting to explore up river (way up river.) I also feel more drawn towards the fast moving water of a river and like the idea of getting away from any congestion you might be more likely to find on a lake. Fishing is a thing, but not a primary interest. I'm just really wanting to be able to explore, observe and photograph wildlife, do some overnight camping, and without limits whether it be on a big lake, or a river. I'm sure a prop driven outboard will meet my needs 90% of the time. I'm just worried that I might have buyer's remorse if I don't get a JET for those other circumstances (i.e. shallows.) Cost is a factor too though. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance....

Our temps are now getting in the 20s at night. Could taking my boat out in super cold water hurt the jet drive motor? After taking it out of the water, I know to trim the motor down & drain the water. Could taking it out in super cold water & in cold temps hurt the jet motor? Also, I store my boat outside with a cover on it. I could store it inside if I wanted to but it would be a real pain. If I do take the boat out in winter, should I store it inside or would this make a difference?

For any one debating on a jet or surface drive, a heads up I have a surface drive and I'm looking to go jet. You can and will shatter a prop in rocks if you use surface drive in them often. Unless your in pure weeds and marsh living on the bayou a jet might be a good idea.

Great video. Low to mid speed control is another con. Once you back off the gas, you are at the mercy of momentum. Jets are not great for anything that requires idling or mid speed. For example, jets can be hard and inefficient to troll with. That’s why a lot of people in PNW will have a second small prop motor (“kicker”). Similarly, they aren’t the best for drifting/fishing and shifting in and out of gear. They have 2 modes -“ON” (wide open) or “OFF” idling to to prepare for going wide open.

Nobody should ever leave the harbor or launch ramp without a kicker and a separate fuel source for it. Here in southeast Alaska, kickers have saved many lives including mine when for whatever reason the main fails. The water is no joke and it doesn't care who you are.

What brand of grease do you recommend for greasing the impeller?
@AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing
@AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing 3 жыл бұрын
Got this from the outboard jets website - Can you use any other grease besides Lubriplate 630 AA and why do you recommend against using a lever type grease gun? Any grease of the same consistency (NLGI 2) which is water resistant should do the job. The main thing is to keep grease in the bearing cavity and water out. We prefer a hand held jiffy lube since it does not create high pressure. If a cartridge type lever gun is used, it should be pumped gently! Excessive pressure will invert the rubber seal lips and seals will no longer keep water out.

I think so. It will be like having 2x 100hp engines. The big advantage of the jet is being able to use it in shallow and or rocky water. Probably not somewhere you would want to water ski.

Stupid question for you. How does the Engine stay cool after you remove the lower unit? Thanks for the Great Informative Video
@AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing

The jet pump has a water pump for the engine. Works just like the water pump in the prop lower unit. So you have 2 impellers in the jet drive.

Last time I took mine out I got a bigger rock wedged in the grate and had it get it out at home. When I did the rock went into the motor. Do I need to be worried and get that out before using again or will it flush out on the water?
@AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing

It is pretty easy to take the foot off and get it out that way. I have just left them in there, no problems so far, but that's probably not the best thing to do.

I have run my jet with a rock wedged between the exhaust and jet nozzle without any problems. You lose efficiency though which could mean the difference between getting on plane in a tight spot or vaccuming the bottom and getting stuck.

Can you swap lower units between prop and jet drives easily/quickly?
@AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing
@AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing 3 жыл бұрын
It's not that big of a deal to swap the lower units. The hard part is that you need to raise the engine around 5" to get the jet pump at the right height. The jet drive is very finicky when it comes to where it sits in relation the bottom of the hull. 1/4 of an inch can make a big difference in performance.
@kevinphallus
@kevinphallus 3 жыл бұрын
If you plan ahead when buying a boat/motor combo it’s easy. If you buy a motor with a shorter shaft and a jet pump, you can use a spacer called a bay kit to drop the prop lower unit down to the proper depth. If you already have a prop lower unit with the appropriate length shaft and want to swap to a pump you have to find a way to raise the motor up about 5” like a jack plate or other means.

Greetings and thanks for the video information. I just thought of a crucial decision-making question. But first let me give you some entail of the weight set-up/distribution in the boat: It has a heavy (130 lb give or take) 25 Horsepower Mercury Jet drive 2-Stroke Outboard, AGM Gel Optimum Bluetop cranking battery, and (185 lb) me in the back of the jon boat The front has a 55 lb thrust Motorguide (about 30+ lbs) trolling motor, two heavy Duracell deep cycle batteries, a 5.5 gallon fuel tank, a couple of anchors (37 lbs total ), etc. (And eventually I may add front and rear decking) I thought to put Nauticus trim tabs on my 14 foot jon boat to help it come on plane even better. But if I install the trim tabs, will the stern/transom be raised too high out of water and cause too much air to get sucked in the intake of the jet drive?? The white caps/big chop I endured last night coming across the main lake doing 19 mph made me think about this!!😆😅

Might want to try a whale tail from the jet dr. first. Get's the nose down and is a lot easier than adding trim tabs. jetdoctor.com/whales-tail/

Have an 18 ft Grizzly Tracker flat bottom and I sheared the skeg off the 60 hp Mercury 4 stroke on rocks in the Delaware River. The lower unit replacement is $2700 as the damage is beyond welding. Thinking of converting to Jet for that money, but concerned over the loss of power. I typically take myself, 2 other people, and my 3 70 pound dogs out; Yes, it is quite a spectacle! Wondering if the loss of power is too much for the size of the boat? The section of the Delaware I am on doesn’t have too much current, but there are some areas of small rapids I need to navigate up. I do take it on lakes sometime, but prefer the river. Any advice on converting?
@AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing

The 60 should push it, but what you end up with is the power of a 40hp once you put the pump on. Might cost more to get a pump for it.
