Question, vibrate forward dead roll back for dirt or just in general? Does anybody know
@DieselandIron8 ай бұрын
In general. It doesn't have anything to do with the material you are compacting. It has to do with the direction of rotation of the weight inside the drum.

The way a weight in the drum in a roller spins is called eccentrics. Alot of new rollers have auto eccentrics therefore you can vibrate both ways! Fyi

@@serg14biggie generally 1ft lifts is about as much as you can go if you are trying to pass compaction tests. Bryan, I think you should adjust the frequency 🤔 ah correctly! 😂 I couldn't resist being a smarty here, I would apologize but I just don't have an apology handy today. On a serious note, I wonder why some rollers are adjustable and some are not. Its definitely above my pay grade, like everything else.
@DieselandIron3 жыл бұрын
haha Thanks for the hot tip my friend! Next time I'll try not to adjust it incorrectly 😂😂
@walsmachinist12 жыл бұрын
It is so important that the vibration is adjustable, first because every mix of material has it´s own way to respont to compaction forces. Second the material becomes more dense during compaction and keeping the force too high will destroy the previous gathered compaction. There are a few rollers which adjust the force automatically!

@walsmachinist12 жыл бұрын
A sheepsfoot roller also can compact asphalt into a more homogenious density without losing density like double drumrollers do on some kind of asphalt types. There is a need for a waterspray system, but not adapt the sheepfoot roller to the surface layer.. But other layers will benefit a more stable and strong construction. Finish rolling should be done with smooth drum compactors. The best rollers for finish rolling are three wheel rollers, these rollers provide a more vertical force while double drum rollers provide a more horizontal compaction force that can lead to a wavy surface and longitudinal and transversal cracks. Asphalt compacted with the right rollers is so much stronger and last much longer! The roller weight and linear load tells nothing about the compaction force or compaction capacity and performance. To find out the real power of the roller you need to know the PLD and PLDB value, these two values are essential to know! During a comparison between a double drum roller of 2500 kg with a drum width of 1.07 m and a double drum roller of 4500 kg with a drumwidth of 1.3 m the 2500 kg roller was stronger and able to compact the mat sufficiently better! PLD force 2500 kg roller 0.17 kg/cm2 (linear load about 11.7 kg), PLD force 4500 kg was 0.19 kg/cm2 (linear load 15.4kg).. That would indicate the 4500 kg roller was stronger but the PLD force of 0.19 kg/cm2 has to be divided by the drumwith of 1.3 m. This leads to a PLDB value of 0.14. The 2500 kg roller with a PLD value of 0.17 has to be divided by 1.07 m , this leads to a PLDB value of 0.15 and this PLDB force explains why the performance of the 2500 kg roller was better. The capacity of the 4500 kg roller was slightly higher because of the higher drumwidt of 1.3 m, For instance a Dynapac CC 722 with a machine weight of 17000 kg has a PLDB value of 0.12, that is not so strong as the 2500 kg roller. A three wheel roller has a PLDB value of approxemately 0.55 or higher! that's a big difference! A small 0.8 m roller with a weight of 1500 kg has a PLDB value of 0.21! So it is not the highest machine weight or linear load that counts!

@@DieselandIron I have been a roller operator for 44 years, I am pensionado now. In 1994 I got involved by the development of the first pivot steered Bomag tandemroller, it was the Bomag BW 184 AD. In the winter of 1996 I did some final tests on the factory before the roller was released on the market. Afterwards I helped Hamm with the development of the Hamm DV 6/8 Super. There were some isues with software system. I have made a drawing of a combination of an articulated steered tandemroller with a pivot steering, the drawing was send without my knowledge to Dynapac. in 1996 this roller was sold under the name Dynapac CC 222. Still you can buy Dynapac rollers with this kind of steering system on tandemrollers.I have cooperated with the University of Twente in the Netherlands to inverstigate the compaction proces of Asphalt. I have studied the Nijboer Value called PLD and I was able to use this knowledge and combine it with my daily work as a roller operator. I am sure the knowledge that I have is not present by any roller company. There is still so much to learn, for instance dynamic compaction is ok, but we need adjustable amplitudes and frequencies. And in a lot of situations the vibration force is way too high! Especially on smaller jobs we don't need excessive forces. Static compaction can solve a lot of problems, but you have to know how a compactor really works! Smooth drums are useful but the wider they become and the higher the linear load the less effective they become. I am working on a 1=3 system, where it is possible to adapt the roller better to the job situation. I talk about a single drum roller with adjustable vibration on the front, at the back the roller can be equipped with either smooth tyres, profiled tyres or two steel drums with a drumwidth that varies from 55 cm to 70 cm width. This combination is capable of compacting every material without a wavy surface or longitudinal and transversal cracks!

@@walsmachinist1 maybe you can answer a question I've had since getting into the industry. How do you go about setting amplitude and frequency for a given material? I have yet to find any resources that can answer my question.
@walsmachinist12 жыл бұрын
@@DieselandIron In our country we mostly vibrate between 35 and 50 Hz, amplitudes are mostly 0.5 mm. With Hamm we can reduce the frequency, not the Amplitude, but there also Oscillation which works pretty well on different types of asphalt. It is very important that there is not a lot of noise, I think you know it as drumringing. If the drum starts to make noise this is an indication that the force is no longer effective. On short jobs, I mean if you can do short runs with the roller it is easier to use a soft vibration and vibrate three or four times. After a couple of passes the aggregates should have settled and from that moment it is better to go on in a static mode. Be careful with tandemrollers, these rollers there is a great risk of loosing density after the third pass on soft asphalt mixes. If you have the possibility to adjust your frequency and amplitude start with 0.3 mm on tninner layers and raise the frequency until the drum starts to make noise. A little soft noise is not so bad, sharp noises must be avoided. When the mix is stiff don't use high frequency, because the binder is not able to follow the speed of the vibrator. You can compare it with a situation when you walk slowly into the water the water is soft and you don't feel much resistance. But when you jump from a certain point that lays 5 meter higher than the water and you hit the water you might feel pain. It is because the water is not able to go away so quickly, I hope you know what I mean! The same happens with binder, the stiff bitumen cannot react so quick and almost nothing changes regarding density, but you here a sharp noise. By reducing the frquency to 30 Hz in combination with an amplitude of 0.3/0.4 mm this might work a little bit, but with a single drum roller with two steel drums at the backside static force is considerably higher and more effective! I have heard that Caterpillar has a kind of vibrating system which is able to adjust the force automatically. But the problem is that when the mix becomes colder vibration is not affective anymore.
