It's worth remembering that the suspension is not just for comfort! Its operation is essential to ensure stability and safety when driving. Incidentally, when braking, a poorly regulated suspension can make it difficult to control the motorcycle, and may even cause an accident.

Spring preload adjustment
This adjustment is made thinking directly about the amount of load supported by the motorcycle. It is done by compressing the spring and must take into account not only the weight of the occupants, but also the possible luggage that is carried (also consider the weight of accessories such as trunks and transport boxes installed on the motorcycle).
It is important to note that this adjustment is made before the shock absorber is installed on the motorcycle. Still, it is possible to make an adjustment by placing the bike on a stand.
The procedure involves measuring the distance, in the most vertical position possible, between the wheel axle and a reference point - the fender, for example. Then, make the same measurement with the motorcycle on the ground and the rider, equipped, on it.
Subtract the second measurement from the first and you arrive at the SAG (Suspension Adjustment Gap) number. Each type of motorcycle has a specific value indicated. Compare the calculated value with what you are looking for to know if you should increase the SAG.
compression adjustment
When braking or driving over bumps, the front suspension compresses to maintain the bike's stability. A suspension that is too soft can destabilize the bike, as well as a suspension that is too hard can cause excessive impacts and judder.
You need to adjust the front preload by measuring the fork shock travel. This can be done by putting a plastic cable tie on the cane and driving to see how much it is moving when cornering and braking.
return adjustment
This adjustment serves to complement the compression adjustment, as it ensures that the bike does not return too quickly to its original position after moving the front suspension, preventing loss of traction and stability.
Have someone hold the rear of the bike and press down on the top bracket to lower the suspension as much as possible, then let go. The normal turnaround time is one second. If it's bigger than that, you need a softer return. Otherwise, you need to harden it.
Adjust the return screw, which can be measured in clicks, and test again. Remember to write down all this information and redo the tests at the end of the suspension adjustment. This will help you to ensure a good job.
It is good to remember that all adjustments must also be made following the recommendations in the manufacturer's manual. Each motorcycle has a type of suspension and behavior, so the limits determined by the manufacturer must always be respected to avoid problems with safety and also with the components.
