Great Video! Great channel!. I am not a pro at all, but some suggestions: instead of hanging to the center board climb onto it. When the boat comes up step into the boat rather than dropping into water again. Timing is crucial. This way back into the boat is much more elegant (at least for heavier and/or older sailors :-)). Laser Bahia has many steps / handles so it is easy to climb up. You can even go up from "inside". For heavier sailors: leave main sheet in clamp until you are on the center board. This way you have all the time in the world to climb up because the weight of the boom and main sail acts as counter weight. Otherwise if the main sheet is free the boat might tilt already before you are on the centerboard. Once on the center board release main sheet to avoid another capsizing. You can slowly release it to control how fast the boat is coming up. You can even stop halfway and wait until boat turns head into the wind. Best is of course id the helmsman keeps out of the water when capsizing. Scooping the crew will take about 15 seconds only in that case. Anyway, I am looking forward to more videos!

Thanks. Helpful comments. We cant cover advanced techniques in this video. We are planning more next year so may add these into another capsize video

Nice video. Worth mentioning that both main and jibsheet need to be uncleated. Had a devil of a time with my boat when we capsized to lee - rare thing - which meant that we wouldn't have necessaryily had the sheets uncleated. (Viscious 40 degree windshift - gotta love lake sailing!)

Thanks for the comment. I guess you could uncleat the jib but being much smaller than the mainsail doesn’t usually present a problem unless it is blowing really hard. We mention to uncleat and pull all mainsheet slack through which is important Capsizing to Lee sucks! Big windhifts on lakes are common. If other boats are nearby it’s a good tip to keep an eye on them to indicate wind shifts or strong gusts.

Would a mast float prevent the boat from turtling?
@sailaboattv Жыл бұрын
Yes these work. As you learn I would suggest getting one. If you are in the uk these are the ones I have seen www.crew-safe.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Mastfloat_40litre.jpg They don’t look that cool but it’s better than inversion

@@sailaboattv yes I can handle a capsized, but turtling is not ideal.

this might be the right group to answer this question im going to buy a small sailboat and see how much of the Mississippi river i can cover. i took a 10 ft kayak 2k miles down it in 2017 and wished for a sail the entire way.... what boat do yall recommend? hopefully cheap enough i can give it away when i reach the gulf, or sail back upstream... im on the smaller lighter end of humans so something i can right when it tips is big would be nice to have room for 2 people and 2 backpacks.. yes i know everything will be wet... yes i know there are barges and boats and ships..... if you dont think i should do it keep it to yourself :P

Being in the Uk I can’t be much help. Try to find a local boat club and ask them. There are many boats, and there would be something suitable but local knowledge is the best help as different waters favour different boats

Yep the Laser Bahia. A good allrounder. A little heavy and not the quickest around but a good dayboat for a group of 4 people in sheltered waters.

@@sailaboattv Hmmm... what do you mean by the sheltered waters part? I am looking for a small boat for learning to sail and getting a taste of the sport. I am planning to bring my small son with me so we can learn together. My wife and daugher I am sure will want to join us from time to time. So, I think this boat can fill the bill. But you mention the sheltered waters, and the beaches I have access to are all open to the ocean, with pretty good gushes of wind. So you don't think this may be the right boat for me?

@Tim Mcintyre Tim, thank you very much for the tips. I will take your advice to heart.
