Today, I will show you how to sand and polish epoxy resin to a glass finish. Having a resin project is nice, but having a resin art project that has a crystal clear glass finish is satisfying when you know how to make it happen. I show you how to dry sand, wet sand, use abrasive paste, and buff your resin lathe projects to a crystal clear, shiny finish. I hope you enjoyed the video!

@ 4:50 I saw a really great idea for that on Alec Steele's channel. Will Stelter shared his technique of using @ 1-2cm wide strips of sanding paper backed with duck tape to extend the life of it. It would work really well, here, too, I imagine. It's almost like super big dental floss that way.

Even if nothing else was useful, which it WAS, there were two really good tidbits in there: first, I knew that lathe artists often use denatured alcohol between grits, but not WHY. Second, that tip about using woodworking wax grit to polish headlights is SUPER COOL! Thank you, this is a great video!

Hey Jake! DOUG suggested we come learn some of your techniques for sanding and polishing resin. I use the micro sanding pads on my small stuff like acrylic pens and bottle stoppers. One thing I learned when I used to do body and paint, while wet sanding a panel I’d use a few drops of dish soap in my sanding water. It breaks the surface tension and the water stays with the project and doesn’t dry out as fast. Give it a try and see what you think. Thanks for sharing!

This is quite possibly the most informative video I've seen on getting your resin pieces to be so clear! My only question is are there any good substitutes to yorkshire paste? I've always sanded everything to 12k grit then used maguires polish, so this is certainly a method I think I'll start to incorporate.
@JakeThompson

@@JakeThompson thank you for the reply! I did purchase some stuff from Amazon, 8oz wizard mystic cut compound. I read all the reviews I could find, and while most people use it for cars I don't see why I couldn't use it for resin. I do much of my shopping on Amazon, better experience there than many vendors, but ill certainly be keeping my eyes open for yorkshire grit. Many of my favorite KZbinrs use the stuff often, heath knuckles, nick zametti, Peter brown, bens worx, and a few others. Keep the amazing content coming!!

Hello Jake, thanks much for the videos, learned a lot as I'm trying to assist my daughter who wants to work with resins and to start her own business, using my limited knowledge with wood working, It's very similar. The items she thought of making and selling, are small and not much bigger than the palm of the hand for now, so everything is done by hand, there really is no room for machinery. And I found a few videos that used several methods to pull the bubbles out that form upon mixing / pouring and using a lighter to pop some of them, it seems like a coffee mug warmer worked the best to get out the micro bubbles, when a vacuum chamber is not an option. And yorkshire-grit would that be best to use or more of a polishing compound after 1k or 2k grit wet sanding to bring out that clear / shine, for the lack of a better word.
@JakeThompson
@JakeThompson 4 жыл бұрын
SgtDreTecKeGamer awesome She will have tons of fun.. if you are going to use Yorkshire grit I wouldn’t go past 1,000 grit.. you can also sand it to a higher grit and use a resin top coat.. there’s lots of ways to do this.
@SgtDreTecKeGamer

SgtDreTecKeGamer I’ve never tried it but.. if you don’t have a pressure pot.. using a torch works, if the heater works.. go for it. I’m all about finding alternative ways to make things work.

One thing that may not have been clear - KEEP MOVING. If you stay in one place at any stage you will will either reshape your project or burn the resins.

You just use sanders, it’s the same process. Or use a topcoat that just cures flat and clear

If someone wanted to start wood turning from scratch what equipment would you advise. I guess start with the wood before going onto wood/resin?
@JakeThompson
@JakeThompson 4 жыл бұрын
Bobbi Buttons I went straight to carbide cutting tools because I wanted to just start making things. Traditional tools require that you are able to sharpen them., I use Easywood tools cutting tools and Chuck.. They aren’t cheap but they are nice and give me confidence. Other than that you need a center finder, sandpaper and things like that.. I have most of the things I use in my amazon store. The link to that is below the video.

Jake I dont have a lathe nor the space for it. Can I still hand sand my resin project? And why sand at all? Some resins are already clear like glass. Will UV resistant resin keep from yellowing? I cast resin only once about 10 years ago and it yellowed unfortunately. All the nice work ruined. So I am a beginner with resin casting. Thank you for this tutorial. Please stay healthy and safe. Take care.

Thank you for watching.. I’m glad you enjoyed the video. If the resin comes out shiny there’s no need to sand. You can hand sand projects that are not on the lathe.. The UV resistant resins are supposed to stay clear. 👍👍😄
