Great info. Had to google it, ONR = Optimum brand "No Rinse Waterless Wash", a liquid cleaner popular with detailers, almost a cult following. Others suggest starting w/ 1000 or 1200 grit, then right to buffing compound. I used 1000 wet-sand on a whole newly painted car and got it to look like your post-sand stage. I didn't use a block but rather used 4 fingers on the paper, which gives better feel. I wiped the sandpaper across, not pulled/pushed along my fingers, which avoids cutting troughs. Sometimes it would grab, because removing a lot of color build-up (single-stage polyurethane, no hardener). I kept a wet rag busy keeping the surface flooded and wiping away paint debris. I'll do another pass w/ 2000 grit. Waiting on a wool pad and "Malco Super Duty Heavy Cut Compound", but best to wait a few weeks anyway to let the paint harden. I wanted to attack the orange-peel while the paint was soft (2 days after painting). I cut into the primer while sanding a few runs and other oops, so I'll use a touch-up gun there. That is the advantage of single-stage vs base-clearcoat, you can respray any bad spots and easily repair the future scratches and dents which will occur, if you keep left-over paint. Some think I should spend $5K on a pro paint job, but I only paid $1K for my car (1965 Dart) and love living as a resourceful bottom-feeder just to tic-off the wife and kids ("just write a check" types).

Hello, you have a great teaching style, a question, I went sanded 1000-2000 grit half a bumper, sprayed 3 base coat duplicolor then 3 duplicolor clear coats. The result was a duller and less silky smooth finish than factory finish. Any corrective action I could do to my work?
@Chris-vc5bb2 жыл бұрын
1000 is too high for spraying base coat. You should sand with 320 and primer. Apply 3 coats of primer 10 minutes between coats. First coat should be very light and third coat should be wet. Let dry for 30 minutes Then sand 400-600 before base if necessary. Apply 3 coats base same manner as primer. First coat light third coat wet. Make sure you give the base coat enough time before you spray clear coat. I would wait at least 45 min before clear. Apply first clear coat light and then wet coat wait 30 minutes and spray 2nd coat of clear. If it comes out with a lot of orange peel or dull. Let it cure for a week or so and then wet sand it with 1000, 1500, 2000 grit increments. Then use a da polisher with cutting compound and finishing polish.

Nice. What wax, polish or sealant is good for new paint with a 1-part clear coat? I don't care about the looks, I simply want to wax it yearly for protection from salts and sun. For the past 10 years I only wash my cars twice a year. Spring and Summer. Seems to be good for the paint overall. The dirt creates a protective film! 😆 And doesn't wash away the wax/polish.

Quick question. I ended up with a couple of clear coat runs on my Grand Prix GTP rear spoiler which is very similar in color. If I am going to sand and buff the orange peel antway, can I just sand down the runs with a 800 or 1,000 Grit wet sandpaper and then until the runs have been sanded down flush then continue on with the rest of the spoiler? I've seen videos where they prepare the run very slowly and in isolated way but as a hole boards going to be sending anyway what's the point? Please advise. Thanks

Next day after drying out (curing) tons of orange peel. I think it may be due to the curing/shrinking process? Either way Im amazed at folks who can lay it on totally flat and glossy and it stays that way! Maybe it's too many coats and not enough flash off between coats?
