One tip I personally have is you should put your water in first when titrating chemicals. Even if starsan is relatively harmless when mixed you should always try to prevent splashing back solutions when working with chemicals. Other than that I did get some info out of this. Thank you!

Good show! I read somewhere that diluted Star San has a shelf life of 2-3 weeks. I don’t know if this is true, however I made a 5 gallon batch before reading that and will never come close to using that much in that amount of time. Guess I’ll have super sanitized kitchen and baths for a couple weeks.

I use it diluted correctly should last 4 to 8 weeks in a sealed spray bottle out of sunlight 1.2 to 1.25 ml per 32 ounce spray bottle then add enough distilled H2O to fill the spray bottle. I don't rinse just let the foam bubbles drip out after 10 to 15 minutes. It does contain acidic phosphates to kill bacteria and other microbes. If you are phosphate sensitive could react with you.

@HowToDoneRight6 ай бұрын
I'm with you on the foam. Seems like it should be rinsed but every time I do it in camera someone calls me out on it. Lol. Some of the additives are natural and safe and I limit these down when possible. But the Campden tablets are for bacteria control and always better safe than sorry. Pasteurization of your wine is a way around that but will lose flavor and not good for your wine in general. Store bought wine has so many more additives so already homemade wine we are ahead of the game. That's how I look at it. 👍👍🍷🍷

You should ONLY rinse it off if you aren't planning on using the equipment immediately and if that is the case you should be using something else.... It says right on the instructions "DO NOT RINSE".... This is because the StarSan is meant to be a protective shield against microbials in the short period that the equipment/container remains wet.

Gut microbiome won't like starsan being put inside the tummy. It doesn't dig chlorine stuffs or fluoride or antibiotics. I understand why you used to try to rinse most of the sanitizer off. Do you do natural ferments with just / only fruit and honey to make mead / wine very much? Thank you for showing your hobby. I would like to drink a glass or mug every other night or so but now it is espoused to not be that healthy as opposed to when the word was to drink a glass of red wine a day. I don't drink any sugary drinks as it stands.
@studentism3 ай бұрын
star san does not contain any chlorine, fluoride, or antibiotics in it. it is a biodegradable food grade sanitizer that does not need to be rinsed. rinsing defeats the entire purpose of sanitizing. if you rinse or dry with a towel after sanitizing, you risk reintroducing germs. that's exactly why this is preferable to bleach, which has to be _precisely_ diluted to a PPM that is strong enough to sanitize AND not so strong that it requires a rinse before you can prep food.
@HowToDoneRight3 ай бұрын
@studentism Great info. Thanks for sharing. 👍👍
@AngelPrissy3 ай бұрын
@@studentism rinsing with clean filtered water is not an issue. Starsan will definitely have an impact on gut microbiome. But it's not like anyone would advertise that. And alcohol drinkers aren't going to care too much about their gut microbiome anyway by and large.
@studentism3 ай бұрын
@@AngelPrissy 1) i don't want to get really into the weeds regarding what you consider "clean filtered water" vs distilled (which is what you'd want to be using in this application, isn't economical at scale, and for a home brewer would just generate tons of unnecessary plastic waste) 2) if you insist on rinsing, you should just use bleach. it's absurdly cheaper, and there's no advantage to buying this product if you're going to rinse after sterilizing. 3) i simply cannot understand why you'd want to run *any* risk of contamination when bottling something you're going to give away to friends + family, or even worse, sell to complete strangers

According to Star San's material safty data sheet (MSDS) says 50% of the product is "phosphoric acid 75% concentrate added to solution". I'm guessing which when further mixed to manufacture recommendation (1 ounce to 5 gallons) is probably about as safe as the food grade phosphoric acid that's added to Coca-Cola to make it tart tasting, but it still slowly erodes the enamle off our teath. The GHS-US classifies phosphoric acid as skin corrosive 1b which is fairly low. But, the MSDS also says 15% of star san is dodecylbenzenesulphonic acid. It is added to make star san foam, but the GHS-US classifications for this ingredient are: accute oral toxicity level 4, low 1a skin corrosion, and aquatic acute level 2. It seems this chemical isn't very stable and may break down from photolysys, minerals in tap water, and too high of ph. The very very very thin film of diluted star san is safe when used appropriately to sanitize equipment and left to dry. And while i'll drink a can of Coca-Cola, I would STRONGLY recomend NEVER drinking star san even if it is diluted to 1oz star san per 5 gallons of water. But that's just my opinion.
