I just watched your sanitizing video many times. I'm in the process. At the part where you say to run the water through the hot and cold lines until one smells bleach, the faucets are on and you say to turn them "on." Did you misspeak and say on instead of off? It makes sense to me that leaving the water in the lines for a few hours will clean them. The confusion is that you say to turn them on and then say to turn them on just after the water is flowing. I've turned my faucets off for a few hours. Please let me know if I'm doing this correctly. Thank you. Your video is awesome.

@@RVTIPSANDTRAVELSThanks for replying, but I don’t appear to have described my problem clearly. When first adding the bleach solution to the system, the instructions are to open each tap(faucet) in turn and let it run until the bleach can be smelled coming out of the tap. My 82 year old nose can’t smell the bleach at all at the concentration recommended, so I don’t know when I’ve run the taps enough. I’m beginning to think that if I can’t find a young enough nose to assist me, then I’ll have to resort to blowing out the water lines first (as in that method of winterizing) so that it has to be bleach solution coming out of the taps once I start pumping from the tank.
@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS
@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS 3 ай бұрын
John, after turning the first faucet on, let it run for 3-4 minutes tops. with that amount of time, you will have more than adequately emptied the lines of the fresh water and begin drawing the solution from the tank.

@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS
@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS Жыл бұрын
Plug your overflow valve, introduce your mixture as normal and fill your tank. Once the water starts to overflow from the gravity fill shut it off. That would get the solution in the gravity fill line. Other than that, you would have to remove it unfortunately.

I don't have my camper yet but if I used it every two weeks or once a month, should I sanitize the water holding tank before every use? My thought is.. the holding tank empty will be wet from the last use, bacteria can grow and if I put fresh water in there it won't be any good. Also is it a good idea or can you use RIDX in your black tank?
@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS
@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS 3 жыл бұрын
probably overkill to sanitize before every trip, but the beauty of it being your camper is doing what you want. I sanitize twice a year, but i always empty every tank and line after each trip until the next trip, usually about a month later. i dont know enough about RIDX's ingredients to confidently answer that right now. let me get back to you on that one.

I have seen videos that say you can pour bleach into the fresh water hose, connect to your tank fill, and fill the tank. Your thoughts on this vs diluting in water for those of us without a gravity fill?
@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS
@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS Жыл бұрын
So there are 2 sides to this... however you can get bleach into the fresh tank I'm kind of ok with. My problem is RV manufacturers really need to give everyone a gravity fill for this reason alone. Just something to consider though, undiluted bleach in a rubber hose, on plastic, or even against metal, for even a short period of time can cause damage to those materials. I would try to dilute it even if only a little bit before you ruin a hose or run it through the pex lines. I know some folks who dilute in a bucket and use a drill pump like this one: amzn.to/43hw9H3

We went to a state campground this weekend and needed to film water when we got there. It was getting dark and they had no visible signs saying where things were located. One of the campers that is there a lot told us the only water was at the dumping station. I filled up there not thinking about it until we were already full. Later when we found the camp host she said to use the one in the ditch without and signs it lights to even know it was there. Will bleach work so we can use the fresh water tank again. I used my brand new inline carbon filter when filling. Is that now garbage or can I sanitize that and the hose with bleach also?

Does your water pump siphon? How would you get water into the tank if it wasn’t pressurized?
@canwelook
@canwelook 11 ай бұрын
Town water is already chlorinated to do exactly this role. This chlorine works, just be aware that exposure to air allows the chlorine to slowly leach out. Roll the town water through your tanks and, voila, they get sanitised.
@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS
@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS 11 ай бұрын
City water does not have this same mixture. The EPA restricts up to or around 4mg/L. This sanitizing mixture (at roughly .13 ounces per gallon) is 889mg/L. Not even close. You need a stronger mixture than city water to sanitize in applications where water is standing for long periods of time, like in an RV that is used part time. Additionally, even if city water sanitized as well as this mixture in the video, which it doesnt, it wouldnt help folks who live on a well. Hope that makes sense and clears things up.
@canwelook
@canwelook 11 ай бұрын
@@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS Yes I agree well water lacks chlorine, which is why I restricted my comments to town water specifically. And yes if water is left stagnant in the tank then the chlorine in the water will disappear as I said, and so the water can be simply dumped and replaced. Town water (chlorinated) is safe unless contaminated or left to stagnate. People in the country collect rainwater for drinking in their tanks, and generally only add chlorine when contamination is suspected or sludge disturbed. A better rule of thumb IMO is to dump all tank water and consider special additional treatment when water has been left stagnant rather than scheduling treatment after any specific period of time of continual usage.

@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS
@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS 3 жыл бұрын
Great question Rick. You should fill your tank all the way up for two reasons. First, you are creating a sanitizing solution based on the size of your tank, so you want to fill the entire tank up with water to satisfy that solution mixture. The second reason is because you wanna sanitize your entire tank along with your lines. Hope that helps.

I have been searching (to no avail)on how to clean a very stagnant and dirty water tank. I just bought an old, used RV (1986 Coachmen Classic on a Ford E350 chassis) as a "fixer-upper" project, and the water must have been sitting in the the tank for years. How no lines were broken from freezing is a mystery to me. When I ran the pump, the water from the faucets was black-ish and stinky. Foul, FOUL stink! Upon visually examining the tanks (my RV has two translucent tanks under the bed) there appeared to be two inches of black gunk or crud coating the insides of each tank about two inches up from the bottom. I ran the water tanks dry to remove that nasty, ungodly FOUL smelling water from them. I doubt a rinse with bleach is going to remove that crud from the tanks. Is there something I can put in there to break that crud down and allow it to wash out, or do I have to replace the tanks? I thought about a very strong bleach solution, about four inches in the tanks, then drive on a back road, weaving from side to side to slosh it around really good. Then drain & repeat a few times. I also considered removing the tanks and shoving a pressure-washer wand into the openings to try to blast the crud out. But that would require completely demolishing the bed to do so. It's quite funky under there, and there are a few broken planks, so that may still happen anyway.

You might want to look into getting it hydro-jetted if it’s really bad.

@@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS Thanks for the advice. I may hit up Amazon to see if I can find such an attachment for my pressure washer. If I can, I may only have to remove the filler hoses and clean them in place. Afterwards I'll use the sanitizing method shown in the video. Note: My first comment may have led one to think that the crud was two inches deep in the bottom of the tanks. I should clarify: It appears to be a gunky film coating the bottoms of each tank and two inches up the sides.

Great video as per your usual. Thank you. Have you heard of or tried a dedicated product like…. Camco TastePURE Spring Fresh Water System Cleaner and Deodorizer for RV and Marine This product is safe for water heaters as well. I have a bottle on hand to try when I sanitize this summer. Cost will be slightly more than using bleach but overall may be safer for the soft goods and tank. Thanks again.

great question Rick, i have heard of it, but Im not sure of the ingredients... however I would like to note that bleach is actually used in water treatment plants to clean water, and when heavily diluted wont harm you. in its pure form it can be brutal especially on clothes, but its one of the best germ killers when diluted. However, I havent done any research on the premade solutions so I cant speak to their effectiveness. Bleach wont harm the tanks, they are usually made of polyproylene. Whats important is that you keep bleach away from metal tanks, like the water heater. Hows your experience with the Camco product?

@@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS I’m going to give it a try in a couple of weeks and see how it works. I will report back what I find. Bleach is definitely effective. I was curiously looking at other chemical options and stumbled upon the camco product. The process is slightly more efficient with less “dwell” time required than with bleach.

I was going to attempt using the camco product when I learned/realized it is not an EPA sanitizer. I then found another product, star brite tank cleaner and again it is not an EPA sanitizer. So I’m going to research the thetford cleaner/sanitizer but the cost per cleaning is getting out of alignment with just using bleach.

It really is a lot of work to maintain an RV, but hopefully these videos take out some of the guesswork. Unfortunately maintenance still needs to be done.

You said "Run faucets til you smell the bleach, then turn on the faucets." Did you mean to say, Then turn off the faucets? cause they're already on. Perhaps I am missing the oint here. I'm a complete newbie, so want to clarify.

Why not use vinegar instead of bleach?
@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS
@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS 2 жыл бұрын
That’s a good question and I’ve read debates about bleach vs vinegar. The problem with vinegar is that is doesn’t kill all types of mold. Vinegar also takes longer to kill germs, while bleach kills 99.9% in minutes. Pros and cons of each I guess.

What’s your thoughts on sanitizing your hose?
@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS
@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS 3 жыл бұрын
I have seen so many videos lately of how mold grows in hoses. I think it would be good to run the solution through it. maybe put caps on both ends and let the water sit in there for a couple hours. Personally, I just replace my hose every year or 2. I know a lot of people are doing that too.

I tried this. Hooked up to town water supply. Have a really bad taste in my water. Water from the hook tastes fine. Water from the hose tastes fine. Its something in my lines. Did this trick. Didnt do anything. On to the next gimmick
