The Keeper Ralf Fährmann once said that his tactic is to make himself very small before the penalty so the striker things that is very easy to hit the goal. but when the striker started to walk he would get as big as possible so the striker instinctly things that the goal got smaller and is more likely to shoot next to the goal. with that tactic he statisticaly safed the most penaltys in one season

Keeper here, and I found this through studying hundreds of PKs. This works for me 90% of the time. Watch the plant arm, that is, the arm of the kicker’s plant foot side. As they swing back their kicking leg, that arm will swing out to counterbalance them. If it’s pointing straight out from the shoulder to their left, it’s going to the plant foot side. If it swings towards you or bends down from the elbow, it’s going to the kicking foot side. This works a TON of the time, as I suspect most shooters don’t consider it when taking a kick. They can look the wrong way with their eyes, stutter step, and do a circular approach all they want; but the arm won’t lie. Stay calm and watch the arm. You might not stop the shot but I’m betting you’ll go the right way. PS: I’d appreciate feedback! Lmk if this works!

God, this video just reminded me of my 11th grade inter school football match. I was the goalkeeper and I had saved 7 shots 3 of them being difficult ones and kept a clean sheet but unfortunately so did the opposite goalkeeper and we proceeded to the penalties and this was the Final. I knew most of the guys were amateurs and i could manipulate them so instead of diving or guessing their shots, I manipulated them by moving left or right before their shot or even screamed some of their girlfriend's name and it worked they either blasted it above or hit the post and I 'saved' 3 out of 5 shots and we won that game...

As someone who goal keeped for 8 year and still plays as a backup, one trick I’ve came down with was to take into account what position the kicker was in game, and how they preferred to pass or shoot the ball. That being did he prefer passing or kick with an open body (ie same side as the foot) or closed body? (ie opposite side) As for the position they played, I’ve noticed most midfielders will shoot on the same side of their foot (cause to also the ideal way to pass as a mid), a striker will shoot on the opposite side of their foot (as that’s what’s more comfortable when shooting with laces in game) and a defender will normal shoot on the opposite side too since they don’t shoot much and shooting this way is much easier.

Im currently 5 for 10 this season because my defense in very aggressive in the box. I think the Dutch goal keeper Hans van Breukelen should be mentioned. In the eighties and early nineties he developed into a penalty killler. He stopped the decisive one in the penalty shoot-out of the 1988 European Cup I final with PSV against Benfica. In the 1988 European Championships final he stopped a penalty by Belanov (that, by the way, Van Breukelen had caused himself). It was 'common knowledge' that he, helped by the Dutch football coach Jan Reker, had a list of penalty takers and their favorite ways to take them. He also would go up to the penalty taker to try to influence them. Of course it didn't always help: Mattheus scored in the semifinals of the 1988 European Championships (although Van Breukelen almost saved it), and in the semifinals of the European Championships of 1992 the Netherlands got beaten in a penalty shoot-out by Denmark. An interesting detail was that a number of the Danish players had been in the same team (PSV) as Van Breukelen for years.

In a shootout, you need to be smart. For the first kicker, dive to the side of the goal from which they start their run up. If you guess right, even if it goes in, for the second shot you need to go the other way because the second kicker will see you guess right on the first one and will think you will go there again. For matches, if a player is right footed, dive to your right, if they are left footed, dive to your left. Watch their eyes and actually try to delay the kick as long as possible to get into their head, make yourself big and imposing and maybe even do a little movement right before you dive to put them off even further

The opposite: I think the best way to take penalty is that the taker have little time to see,if you look at between the ball and keeper just before you make contact with the ball,keeper will moves/dive slightly to right or left predicting where the ball will go and this is the time where you can shoot to the opposite direction of the keeper.

I’m a decent keeper who plays in Sunday league and the only time I’ve been scored on in the last 3 seasons by pks is in a shootout. In game I saved all but 1 pk. My trick especially against trash players is to take your time. I take off my gloves and tie my boots, take a sip of water and take my time putting my gloves back on, I focus on the players facial expressions and where they’re looking during the run up of a shot. Idk why but it helps me

I used to play goalie from u8 to u12. I handled most penalties by looking at their eyes, if it was a bit too obvious i would go the other side, his head is pointing to the ball and his eyes are pointing to one side of the net, i would go to where the eyes are going.
