How to save a Tesla Dash Cam clip in Version 11

When Tesla released version 11 a few months ago, they removed the icon for saving a quick dash cam clip. In this video I will show two ways to save a clip to your USB drive or native storage.

Great video! I discovered a voice command for saving dashcam footage.. Hit the right scroll button on the steering wheel and say ‘Save Dashcam’.

Thanks Fred! Great comment. I also forgot a 4th way would be to enable “save on honk”. Would be a bit strange to honk the horn each time you wanted to save a clip, but it would work and would also save during an event where you actually needed to use the horn.

I am wondering if anyone has insight on *when* to "save" following an event. I had a road rage incident and the dashcam only saved a portion of it. For context I was been tailgated by Kenworth k200 with trailer and had a car infront of me going too slow but road geography prevented me from overtaking and getting away. The incident was probably five minutes in duration.

In the dashcam settings you can also set the horn to save dashcam footage - so you just press the horn when you want to save dashcam footage.

Thanks for the comment Martin. Does the horn still sound? It makes sense if you were about to get in an accident you would instinctively press the horn and it would save a clip, but other than that, I don’t know if I would want to be honking my horn every time I want to save a clip.

HI i have a bumper hit today at 3pm and now its 8pm - they claim no damage with me but her shoulder but wanted a police report....and then when the police came wanted to claim all this damage from the bumper hit caused all this damged to there car in many pllaces but not possible...how do i get the footage can onlt see sentury mode when parked...not when drives..also have a hard drive plugged in..

When you are in park, you can use that same dash cam icon to launch the player.

I had a Kia rolling back in front of me at the lights. I was tooting to get the driver to STOP. Well because I was set up to record on honk - it did not save the part following that event of the Kia taking off. I guess I should have hit honk again? ANyway I disabled "save on honk" after that.

I'm a bit confused. Is this true?: Tesla does NOT continuously record to the USB drive, it only SAVES (moves from buffer) a video clip if you manually request it via the UI. I installed dashcams in my non-Tesla car and they record continuously to the microSD card without a need to request the video be saved. I expected Tesla to do the same, but apparently it doesn't? Dashcam is always recording the front, left, and right cameras when the car is on. It will save the most recent hour of footage in a folder on the drive called RecentClips. That hour of footage continuously overwrites to minimize space usage. If you tap the camera icon , or honk the horn, it will save the last ten minutes of footage in one minute clips to the SavedClips folder on the USB drive. To be sure I capture an event that I want to save, I typically will just tap the camera icon to save that segment. Otherwise, you run the risk of overwriting, or having to search through a lot of data.

How big is storage capacity for dash cam saved video?

I believe it comes with 32GB onboard storage. I think they recently updated that to 64GB, but I bought a Samsung high speed 256GB drive and it takes a few months to fill up.

Yes. Put the Dash Cam in your docking station and press the icon when you want to capture a clip.

Do I have to save the clip so it’s on the USB? Or can I plug the USB into the computer and hunt for the specific footage I want. I’m asking because I want to review something that happened but i didn’t save it and I can’t seem to find it. It only has the short clips I’ve saved before. Weird because I can view the entire drive in the car but not on the USB. Wish everything would just be on the USB lol

What year is your Tesla? I think all post 2020 models have storage on an external USB in the glovebox.

@@TeslaModelYdaho 2023. I found the clip eventually. They are all there and I just had to find it. Originally I plugged the USB to my iPhone via adapter and I could not find the clip. When I plugged it into a computer I found it. I wish I knew an easier way.

There is no sound that I am aware of. I am sure they have a mic or two on the exterior of the vehicle, but they aren’t using it in conjunction with the dash cameras.

On my 2020 model, there are two USB ports underneath the induction phone charger. I think they added another one in the glove box in later versions so that thieves couldn’t steal the USB if they broke in. I also use a USB hub that I picked up from Walmart. How far back does the saved clip go? If I had an accident and pressed the button after, would it go far enough back to record the accident?

I believe it will store the last 10 minutes regardless of if you trigger it manually or not.

If you have an event that you want to save in real time, you can press the dash cam icon (or if you press the horn - if enabled), and it will automatically save the event. You can save the dash cam icon to the bottom bar so it is easy to access. Otherwise, you will need to go to the viewer and search manually through the clip and offload somewhere. The icon changes to show the status of Dashcam: Grey camera icon with a red circle in indicating recording RECORDING: Dashcam is recording. To save video footage, touch the icon. To pause recording, press and hold the icon. Grey camera icon with no red dot. AVAILABLE: Dashcam Is available but not actively recording. Touch the dashcam icon to start recording footage. Grey camera icon with a red pause dot PAUSED: Dashcam is paused. To resume recording, touch the icon. To avoid losing video footage, pause Dashcam before removing the flash drive. Grey camera icon with a grey recycling icon BUSY: Dashcam is in the process of loading, saving, or overwriting footage. While dashcam is busy, footage is not being captured and recorded. Grey camera icon with a green checkmark indicating clip saved SAVED: Footage is saved. You can also save Dashcam clips by touching the Dashcam icon in the app launcher while Driving.

The car will keep 1 hour of footage and then overwrite. It will not delete saved footage, so it is possible you can fill your drive with saved clips.

Not that I am aware of. Currently you can view the sentry cameras live through the Security > Sentry Mode > Enable and View live cameras, but the two ways I know to view a saved clip are through the display in the vehicle, or by plugging the USB into your PC.

Someone driving fast tried to pass me on a 1 lane road in a residential street and struck my car model 3 earlier today. I clicked on save which saved the accident footage at 5:30pm. When I got home and removed my thumb drive at 6:33 pm, the thumb had just erased the 5:30 foot. I guess even after you save the footage, it continues to record for an hour and erasing your previous footage. Take the thumb drive out within 1 hour!!!!

Luckily I recorded my dash cam footage on my phone before that one hour period. But didn’t know to pull out usb. If I did I would’ve had footage of all angles on the car.

If the car was parked and unattended, you would need to have Sentry Mode activated. If Sentry Mode is activated, it should capture and store any snippet of activity that happens near your vehicle. You can then review directly on the dash screen, or remove the USB and watch on a computer.
