Thanks for mentioning cross pollination! I see so many people saying to just save your seeds, no problem. And then they don't know what happened the next year when they end up with something very different (and potentially unwanted, like a bitter small leaved basil, lol). It's funny that you say tomatoes don't cross pollinate, because mine do all the time, but that might have something to do with how close I plant everything, lol.

I started out a few years ago buying basil plants from a garden center. Then I found out I could easily grow them from seed. Now I know I can also save the seed from my plants and grow them again! Thank you for this video! My favorite basil is the Large Leaf Basil.

Cool! I have been growing (and buying) Basil plants for years. This year I learned how to cut the tops off and grow new roots in water to try and keep basil going all year. I usually only plant 1 variety so seeing how to save seeds gives me another way. This is great because I have been moving my entire garden over to heirloom and re-use each year. You win my tip of the day award!

I gather mine into paper lunch sacks and label. This way i can gather anytime anywhere and do the rest of the process later. I also store in envelopes and label to keep them dry.

I did the crunching of the seed dried flower. However I noticed that a lot of the dried flowers still had seeds so I pretty much went through every one and got about 10 times more seeds. Lightly blowing as on them as you showed works very well. Thank You.

I wished I knew this trick of harvesting basil seeds earlier I harvested seeds the hard way, squeezing each flower until seeds came, one flower at a time. 😫😫 Doing so did you know each basil flower holds 5 seeds? 🙃

@@TamaraGrace Hi Tamara! I am from the DEEP SOUTH down near Mobile & the Gulf Shores (BEACH) area. Kinda in between the two areas in the deep backwoods. LOL!! You are up north so our gardening would probably be a bit different. I am in grow zone 8b. What is your grow zone? Even tho we may have different growing zones, we can still communicate and swap ideas & growing methods. I am fighting bugs this year that I have NEVER had to deal with and I'm about ready to set off BUG BOMBS in the garden...if I thought it could help! LOL!! I try not to use any pesticides and use Neem oil and sometimes BT but that doesn't seem to touch these evil creatures. For the 1st time in YEARS of gardening I have had squash vine borers destroy all my summer squash, zucchini & spaghetti squash plants just when they were starting to really produce well. After reading up on them, they are a hard pest to get rid of. I picked some of the largest, prettiest zucchini one day from huge, lush green plants and two days later my plants were DEAD. I did revive one since it had grown roots that were not attached to the dead part but a week later, it was dead too. Really ticked me off since I'm a homesteader and depend on my veggies for eating in the winter and into spring. Stink bugs are now taking over my tomatoes so got to find a way to remedy those pests. Seems like everything I've learned thru the years of gardening are having to be RELEARNED with our changing climates & growing conditions. Used to plant tomatoes/peppers in full sun but now having to plant them in partial sun to keep them from burning to a crisp. We also have to contend with HURRICANES down this way and just went thru Tropical Storm Claudette that dumped 12 inches of rain on us in 2 days. Prior to that we were in a drought so even tho the rain was excessive, the gardens loved every inch of the rain and perked up nicely! Watching Hurricane Elsa to see which way it will be headed. Looks like Florida may get this storm but there were two models showing it coming my way. I hate hurricane season but that is all part of living in the coastal area of the DEEP SOUTH!

That is so much easier than what I did...I used my fingers and a toothpick to push and pick the seeds out of the pods. I will definitely do it this way next time.

Reminds me of seeing methods of separating wheat from the chaff, where people would roll the seedheads about to break them up, then once they had enough, they'd throw it all up into the air, the wheat seeds would come straight back down, but the chaff would float off away from the wheat, has to be done on a hard surface, but works... :)

I realize I'm five years late to this video. Very informative but I think there's a little bit more that can be said about saving basil seeds. I find it easier to snip the dried Brown stem with basil seeds on it with scissors where it meets the healthy part of the plant. I then pinch my fingers over the cut stem and slide the stem through my fingers dropping the seeds into a container. All the seeds come off of the stem. I live in a humid environment and if I were to do the seeds the way that he instructed I would not get any seeds. Even though the seeds are dry and ready to be removed they still have dried brown flower around the seeds. I then let seeds dry overnight and that allows me to take more of the dried flower off of the seed area. I'm not saying my way is the best way but it is what works for us here in our humid environment. Last summer while letting our basil go to seed we had only 3-4 bees at a time visit. This summer we have a larger number and variety of pollinators visiting as well as dragonflies. He's right the smell of collecting seeds from basil is wonderful. Hi, Love your seed saving videos! Question from Canada, what is the rule with frost? My holy basil was just getting dry enough when we started seeing our evenings dropping to below zero. Would love to know a rule in general for frost and seed saving, other seeds, not just basil. We had a great growing season, so many plants were still green before it froze.

I use a blender for a few seconds then strain / blow out chaf. Separate seeds from spent flower heads with blender or shake in bag. Strain & blow chaff away. Cover flowers from self polilnating plants, like basil, with small hole mesh bag to reduce cross polination & bug infestation & shake plant to help pollination. Pass the word.

Quick question: you said to wait until the seed pods are dry before you pick and collect them but I find that the basil becomes too bitter once they start seeding and I leave them there. Can I gather them once they seed and before they dry on the plant and dry them out on the counter and then collect the seeds? Is there a risk of mold then?

My oregano plant died last week, overnight they wilted and turned a purleish green. They then became very brittle. I have no idea why this happened i watered them once a day, fetilized two weeks before and trimed when need. Any ideas why this happebed?

Somewhere cool and dry. You can put them in a regular envelope, and, if you have a dry basement that stays relatively cool, store them there, away from light and moisture.

I would love to know how to save radish seeds! I suppose I gave them too much fertiliser and they bolted without producing bulbs-the native bees loved it-so I left them, now I have radish seed pods-but don’t know how long I should leave pods on plants-till they are completely brown and dry?

When the stalk the pods are on is turning brown cut the stalk and put it in a paper bag. The pods can burst and scatter the seed as they dry. When the pods show signs of splitting scrunch them up like he did the basil and winnow them out the same way.

I want to make my own garden bed and start a compost pile. I do have one question though, is it okay to start a compost pile in the winter so it can be ready for the spring? Would it still be able to heat up to the right temperature?

Allyson Gurczynski fall is a great time to start composting since you usually have a lot of garden waste i.e. Falling leaves, dead plants, flower trimming, last lawn cut of the year. You can even ask neighbors for their garden waste. You could cover it with plastic to keep it from getting too much moisture if you are in a wet climate. Good luck.
