Five years since Brexit took effect, it doesn't feel like the reality has matched the promise, says Daniel Hannan.
Introducing the Telegraph's new series on How to save Brexit, he said: "I was astonished that the country that had traditionally led the world in free trade was so reluctant to embrace proper commercial liberalisation.
"So in hock to a tiny part of our economy, which nonetheless has a sentimental hold over us, namely agriculture and food production, this would stand in the way of ambitious deals with Canada, the US and so on.
"I was astonished by our slowness in deregulation and seizing the opportunities that would come from faster growth, as we could suit our own rules to our own conditions and needs.
"I'd imagined that outside the EU, we could get out of some of the more silly energy boondoggles that drive up prices there. In fact, we used our Brexit freedoms to give ourselves even more expensive energy than we'd had while members of the bloc."

First time I heard this guy I thought he was an actor. His use of the accent and the english language sounded just perfect. It is difficult but we should beware of splendid demagogues. Funnily enough, in Italy it's quite the opposite, if politicians speak like that very few would take them seriously.

This from the brexit campaigner who basically offered "Free beer tomorrow!', and reassured us that 'No one's talking about leaving the customs union or the common market'. Proven to be untrustworthy and delusional about the benefits of brexit- there are only costs and self-inflicted trade barriers

I admired Mr Hannan and really got behind his explanation of why we needed to leave the EU. However he needs to look at himself in the mirror on this issue. Too many experienced, intelligent and principled Brexiteers disappeared after the referendum chasing the chimaera of personal wealth in the US etc... He should have immediately run for parliament and then held the Tories to account.

Daniel Hannan was a prominent MP at the time of Brexit, for those too young to take part in the EU Referendum. He's extremely knowledgeable on all matters concerning Brexit so its great tovsee here he's lost none of his inspirational optimism whilst the Remoaners have tried their best to prevent a successful independent Britain. In the next decade at least 4 EU countries WILL follow GB's lead by exiting the EU, which is currently combating its inevitable loss of control over the 27 by bringing in more authoritarian rules (decrees). Its good to know the enthusiasm for a fabulous new era of opportunities from an independent UK is still as fresh as in June 2016! We Brexiteers are still on board and not in the slightest demoralised by the antics of the tunnel visioned EU fanatics. The over 60s especially remember well what this country was (in the 60s) and STILL CAN BE if only the EU shackle-lovers would step aside and let the UK flourish.
