Five years since Brexit took effect, it doesn't feel like the reality has matched the promise, says Daniel Hannan.
Introducing the Telegraph's new series on How to save Brexit, he said: "I was astonished that the country that had traditionally led the world in free trade was so reluctant to embrace proper commercial liberalisation.
"So in hock to a tiny part of our economy, which nonetheless has a sentimental hold over us, namely agriculture and food production, this would stand in the way of ambitious deals with Canada, the US and so on.
"I was astonished by our slowness in deregulation and seizing the opportunities that would come from faster growth, as we could suit our own rules to our own conditions and needs.
"I'd imagined that outside the EU, we could get out of some of the more silly energy boondoggles that drive up prices there. In fact, we used our Brexit freedoms to give ourselves even more expensive energy than we'd had while members of the bloc."
