I absolutely love reusing my old potting soil and potting mix!! I amend my soil with bloodmeal and Omeal and then I also use plant tone or bone, depending on what I’m using it for!!😊

Very helpful. Until recently I replaced potting soil every year. I have lots of containers so very expensive. I now use old soil on the bottom and new on top with plant tone or osmocote mixed in. That has worked well. I've never sterilized soil but don't use any that contained diseased plants.

Thank you! I remember buying bag after bag after bag of potting mix from Sam's club and it really added up. Now that I make my own potting mix (and mix it in with my used potting mix), I'm saving a ton of money! I use Osmocote slow-release fertilizer as well and it seems to really help the plants out. I have been re-using my soil for the last few years. I have six nineteen inch pots plus two tall pots. Would cost about 120 dollars to fill. If I see deals on potting mix might buy a couple. bags. Every few weeks I run my drill with the big planting auger. So soil won't get moldy on the bottom. Use fertilizer and worm castings. I'm glad to see your feeling better.

Yes! I started recycling my potting soil a few years ago. I even made a video on it. I sift the soil, to get the old debris out. I treat it with compost and plant-tone. I've had great results ! And it's a great way kickoff the spring! Thanks for the additional information and thanks for sharing!

I have reused my potting soil the last few years, by topping it off with fresh soil and adding fertilizer. The old soil I add to raised beds. I did recently fill a new raised bed making my own soil mix by using top soil, cow manure, and peat moss. And I am making worm castings to add to my raised beds this spring…😊 I hope it’s successful! My FIL was frugal and what he always did was dump all potting soil in separate compost bin. He would add a few small things to the pile like peels ect. It worked. So that’s what I do and add fertilizer in spring.

Another great, informative video. Throwing away potting soil is so wasteful 😢 I will mix in fresh soil and/compost, depending on container size, and if all else fails it goes in the compost bin. I didn’t think of using as a lawn leveling resource though, and since that’s a project for next year will definitely try it. Thanks!

I just gather up my pots for Winter. I'll cut down any dead growth leftover and throw that in my compost. In the Spring I dump everything into a bin and pot my new plants. I'll add a slow release fertilizer as I nake each new pot.

So. Vita, I have a compost question. Do you cover your finished compost? Winter is coming and I don't want all the nutrients washed out of my finished compost. And if you cover it, what do you use? Thank you!!!!

Hi Nancy! Yes, once my compost is finished, I do like to cover it with a large tarp in order to keep the nutrients in. I also like that during the Spring / Summer if I haven't gotten to spreading the finished compost, the tarp helps protect the pile from getting too wet, from nutrients leaching out, and from weeds seeds germinating. 😊🌸

I think young students at university trying to get new ideas about top soil , but to put soil in a house and bake it , it is a little bit crazy. , maybe it will give them good grades for experiments. People for all previous centuries been leaving without electricity, and grew garden in a healthy way. If you looked the info how ancient people grew the garden , it will be more interesting to use their ideas. Nothing should be complicated. This universities trying to create more chemicals for our garden and top soil, so they could make some money of the products. I personally , don’t trust anyone ( neither any articles) .. just follow my own knowledge and my garden is healthy and has no chemicals and any of thats products from shops .

what a sad existence when you don’t even trust local academic institutions.. not trusting any source if information is just as crazy as believing everything you hear. I’m just glad that I was taught how to critically evaluate studies and sources for myself. Anti intellectualism is sadly way too prominent in American society new a days. If a society can’t understand the scientific method it is lost and just taking guesses based on reactionary ignorance

@ … this is about gardening… ( we are not talking about physics/ astronomy studies / and articles to hear new studies in that area) there is nothing to study about basic knowledge of top soil and gardening. This is so obvious. You do everything natural way. ( no need to pay money for somebody’s suggestion). Lots people was listening science and buying junk/poison food at the grocery stores , just because they believed it’s save. You can’t trust American studies about food , especially how to grow garden . Most of American has chronic illnesses because they trust too much those studies.

I follow the science and it leads me to do what my great grandfather did in his garden.. the science backs up organic methods and also using as little as possible to conserve the planets resources.. there is nothing inherently reactionary about doing things the way they have been done a long time ago.. but thinking that anything new or backed by science must be wrong is just anti intellectual. It’s wrong.. go read about the yield farmers got back in the day.. you are benefiting from all of the advances of science and modern society while giving science and academia any of the credit. It’s just backwards thinking
