This is the best instructional video to show which seed will produce a flower.

Nothing more satisfying than growing a successful crop of anything off of your own saved seeds. We need to know we did a good job. It’s not as easy as you think if you’re not in to it. First time saving Zinnias this year and can’t wait to see what happens (or not!) lol Anyway, great video and channel! You are well spoken and to the point…and you care. New Sub here… Joel

I really appreciate you getting up close to show the examples of heathy seeds vs underdeveloped ones. I was wondering how it would even be possible for these flimsy ones I’ve harvested were supposed to work out but couldn’t find anything showing exactly what I should be looking for (never bought zinnia seeds just harvested seeds from store bought) Thanks a million, and keep up the great work!!

Thanks for mentioning when to harvest them-especially to leave them on the plant until the flower heads are completely dry. This was a very thorough video!

Purposefully cross pollinating zinnias is fun. It's interesting to see what you get the next year. Cross pollinating your favorite flowers and colors year after year should eventually end up with you having your own personal favorite zinnia!

I harvest zinnia seeds as well. Just a simple tip, trim the heads before seeding. I take scissors and trim off the dead pedals close to the head. This makes seeding so much easier. Enjoyed your video. Happy planting!

Great ideas. Love zinnias. I always save mine also. I label my ziplock bags with permanent marker. I spread them out on my dinning room table on paper towels for several days until completely dry. Then I bag them and label them. Have great success each year. It really saves money over time also. Love your videos. Very informative. Peace and good fortune and good health to you and your family. 😃

My zinnias are doing great...I'm trying to save seeds but I have none drying up they still look fresh and beautiful except its middle Oct and neatly to freeze at night.Should I cut flower and let dry inside??
@EsthersGardeningAdventures
@EsthersGardeningAdventures Жыл бұрын
You could try that. I find I usually get at least a few viable seeds when I pick the flowers early. But it may not be as many as if you could have waited longer.

Thank you! Apologies. I answered the question based on thinking you were asking about a different video. I don't freeze my zinnia seeds. I store them in envelopes or baggies until I winter sow them. I use youcut to edit and film/edit everything on my phone

If they are not open pollinated varieties they may cross pollinate if you have several varieties. If you just have one variety you are okay.

Can you save seed from a cut flower you had in a vase?
@EsthersGardeningAdventures
@EsthersGardeningAdventures Жыл бұрын
You could try. You never know, the seeds could be mature enough. Your best bet is to cut the flower head off once you are done using it and let the head dry completely, then check the seeds to see if there are any viable looking ones.
@Dahliawoman
@Dahliawoman 2 жыл бұрын
I thought you pulled the flower head apart and the actual head part is also part of the seeds? Yes?
@EsthersGardeningAdventures
@EsthersGardeningAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
The seeds are in the head of the flower but you don't need the base of the head once you take the seeds out. You can compost or toss that out.

Help! What am I doing wrong? 99.9% of my harvested seeds look translucent. Only a few look like the zinnia seeds you showed in your video and what comes in a seed packet.
@EsthersGardeningAdventures
@EsthersGardeningAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
Hmm. I'm guessing you may have harvested the flower heads before the seeds were fully developed? The flowers need to be starting to lose their petals and drying up before you cut them in my experience
@cbodine100
@cbodine100 2 жыл бұрын
@@EsthersGardeningAdventures Maybe I waited too late? I didn’t harvest the flower heads until they were completely dry and had no petals left. (I can easily pull the “seeds” from the head.) The few good seeds I got that look like yours actually had dried petal remnants still attached to them.
@EsthersGardeningAdventures
@EsthersGardeningAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
Ah that could be it. The birds may have beat you to the seeds or the flower may have dropped the seeds already. What you are pulling are not seeds then.
