Friend of mine was drunk and inhaled a gnat. It moved through his nose to his brain. He lived about 5 days. Please, Mark, please be careful with gnats. It’s critical to exhale them immediately. Great video btw, and I’m with you on the Xenia’s. And I’ll gladly take the shirt off your back! Beautiful blue.

I grew Zinnias (Johnny's Seeds Benary's Giant Mix) for the first time this year and they have performed amazingly!! I've had huge bouquets of zinnias in almost every room of my house this summer and have loved it. That powdery mildew is a B though. I'm taking your cue and harvesting some seeds. Hi Mark! I love Zinnias! Not only do they have beautiful colors and you opened my eyes on Zinnia's resistance to deer and rabbits, they are "drought tolerant!" This year, we reached a 110 degrees here in the Northwest (with no rain) and the Zinnias went unscathed while the evergreens, ferns, etc. were scorched severely! I will try your method, although I have went around and plucked the dead heads on each one of the colors! Thanks for sharing and I definitely look forward to your Zinnia patch next year!

Hi Edna! Zinnas are great and a very underused annual. Have you tired the Zesty series from Ball Seed? They have the best purple zinna I've seen. I even like the short mounding type such as the Profusion and Zahara series. Both incredible and very mildew resistant and great for beds and pots too. I noticed on the news for quite a while you guys were getting bombarded with very hot weather. That must have been horrible! Isn't that very atypical for your area? Sharing....It's all my pleasure. I love making the videos! As always, thank you for watching and of course, I appreciate your comments as well. Edna, you have a great day! Best, -Mark

@@marksgardenlife5971 Hi Mark! No I haven't tried Ball Seed...did you put up their link? I love to try new zinnia varieties! Yes, indeed we were miserable during that hot spell and you're right, this was quite atypical for us! So I've come to the conclusion, to cover my bases, from now on it will be plants that are heat tolerant and pot friendly, yet beautiful like Zinnia's. Let us know of any other heat or applicable resistant plants, ok? Or I guess the term used is "hardy" for certain areas. Impatiens are another favorite of mine as well. They do quite well here in the NW. Thanks much and hugs!
@marksgardenlife5971

Hi Edna! Actually, I forgot Ball only sells to wholesale accounts which we are here. They do sell to companies such as Park seed. I am starting a large seed company in 2023, so you will be able to purchase things like them through me if you are interested. A percentage of my profits are going to a animal welfare charitable trust I am setting up to fund things related to animal welfare which is a big thing for me. There are many heat tolerant annuals that work very well in pots. Things such as some of the blue salvia such the Evolution variety, the Big Begonia series are excellent, of course flowering Vinca, Sun Impatiens to name a few things. Have a great upcoming week! All my very best, -Mark

When your planting alot every year this is one way to save money. I have friends that call me now to come and dig up their cannas and elephant ears bulbs if i want them because they are too lazy to do it. I always go because it saves me tons of money for next year. Have loved zinnias since I was a child. I am retired now. When I was a child the older people referred to them as old maids. Have never heard anyone else call them that. I have had pretty good luck avoiding mildew by keeping sulphur sprinkled on them during the month of June here in Zone 5B, ( first month I plant them). That works well as long as there isn’t too much rain and I can keep it on.

Hi! You know, I've never heard that term before. I just looked that up and they said "an appellation that conjures images of well-loved gardens tended by genteel, unmarried ladies of a certain age." Well, I learned something new today! The sulphur. I'm going to give that a try. I was aware of that being the "organic" method. Thanks for watching and of course, I appreciated your comments too! Love zinnias as well but in northern New Jersey powdery mildew is the annual curse. Had a garden full of zinnias one year, in full bloom...all different colors and sizes and types. It was magnificent but i was too proud. The next day a groundhog from next door had eaten the whole garden down to two inch stem stalks. So beware the Ground Hogs, or whatever you call them in your area, are watching. Waiting until the zinnias peak. A perfect salad. I have never been that angry. Hahahaha. But this idea you propose is intriguing. Don't have the room now to do it. And yeah, that blue shirt. Perfect.

@@marksgardenlife5971 you’ve never seen Overboard?? Not a good thing. It’s a classic. When you’re stuck in R.I.C.E. mode I highly recommend a 🍿 🎥 time. 😁 Maybe it will actually get you to sit long enough to rest, ice and elevate! I can see you’ve got compression covered. 👏🏼 So sorry about the bike accident! Is there an epic story, like flying off a jump up in the mountains as you soar over a herd of grazing deer? 🤣😂🤣 J/K. I was going to say, fleeing from a mama bear but since you fell...well, the knee would have been the least of your problems! LOL At least you didn’t break an arm or wrist when you bailed on the bike. I pray no ligaments had tearing. ACL/MCL tears are lengthy recoveries. Be careful out there! God speed on your recovery my friend. 🙏🏻 Also praying there aren’t any pesky gophers making holes in the turf! Those creatures create a recipe for sudden disaster for ankles and knees alike!! I’m so excited to know I can take off the blooms of my zinnias and store them for next years seeds! Looking forward to the sowing video of these beauties next year. 😉 Summer flipped off like a switch! 35° right now 🥶. It was just 75° on Tuesday! Longing for land, Mark. I’m so close to graduating. I’ve been doing work and school since 2018. I’m quite sick now and have to delay. Hopefully my future property will have zinnias and EVERYTHING haha. It’s been a long time coming… 🥲

Hi Patricia! Actually, I see a lot of bald eagles here on the property. I guess they like the river and wooded areas. Zinnas are great, aren't they! So many different types too! The brace, yes. I fell off my bike! lol Thanks for watching and of course, I appreciate you commenting as well! Have a great day! Best, -Mark

Thanks Mark for responding to my question about what do you do with the debris after excalvating a lake. I would love to see a sit-down at a drafting table with a landscape architect to evaluate the schematics, planning, logisticts, zoning and schedule on a such large project. It must require a lot of advanced planning. Will it have a bridge to a little island with a chinese pagoda or gazebo on it? Is it an opportunity to have ducks and swans?

Hi Greg! With a place this big and such a large staff to maintain it, there always is a lot of planning ahead. It's to expensive not to plan to be honest. As with any project, you change things as you go along to make things better. I was just changing some of the positions of where Hollies were being planted yesterday. Yes, there will be an island with a bridge onto it with a replica of how gazebos used to be built such as the ones I still see in Vermont in the town squares. I like making landscapes into something like you may have in a dream. The lake starts on the upper end with a fieldstone springhouse which flows into a shallow coy pond, which than has a waterfall that will flow down into the lake. The lake will have tall victorian street lights surrounding it on the grass apron and all the larger specimen trees on the hillside such as the holly and magnolias will be underlit and there will also be some overhead lighting to pick up the things that are lower such as when the azaleas (several thousand being installed) are in bloom or the 100,000 plus bulbs that will be going in too. That will allow for not only enjoyment during the dark of all the colors, but it also will create reflections on the lake of the same doubling the beauty of what you see, just in different ways. Yes, I'm nutts! lol I want both swans and ducks. The fun part will be to teach Annie and Holly to leave them alone! I have a friend who has swans on his estates lake and I am filming up there on Friday actually, so the video will be shown not this weekend, but next. Try and catch that one. His place is something. And I also am filming at another friends estate the following week and his place is incredible as well. Wait until you see some of his interesting thing's he's done. A true artist. Well, I'm probably boring you, so I'll shut up! Thank you for watching and of course, I appreciate your comments too! Have a great week! Best, -Mark

They don't! I know what you mean! lol I installed a new bed of 1,500 Daylilies last fall and never saw a flower! The deer at night ate every flower bud off them! Next year during flowering season, we are going to have to wrap the entire huge bed with deer netting I guess. Thanks so much for watching and I appreciate your comments too! Pat, you have a great week! Best, -Mark

Thanks Mark. You've totally sold me on doing this for next year. I would really like to see how you sow the seeds and cover them. Do you water continually or sporadically? Are there pests such as slugs I need to look-out for? Thank you, DA
@marksgardenlife5971
@marksgardenlife5971 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Donald! You're very welcome! I'll do a video next year showing me sowing them. The sowing is very easy and I only watered them right after sowing once. I guess the slug issue depends on the part of the country you're in. I had no issues. Thank you for watching and of course, I appreciate your comments as well. Donald, you have a great week! Best, -Mark

Great video and awesome to see well grown zinnias.....i really like cosmos esp the Sea Shells mix. Its petals are like a tube with the end cut off and i have had zero disease problems. They come in white, pink and a fuchsia red, tho i might try the newer Lime series of zinnias that have pinks and mauves mixed with green.... what happen to your knee???...how many times have a told you, the bedroom is not Cirque de Soleil !!!

Hi Rourke! I'm happy you liked the video! Thank you! I think about anyone could grow Zinnas they are just that easy. Cosmos are another old fashioned easy to grow flower. Did you know Cosmos are native to Mexico and have been domestically grown since the late 1700's? That's a long time! The lime series of zinnas are very attractive. My knee....would you believe I fell off my bike! lol Cirque de Soleil. lol Believe me, those days are in the past! As always, thanks for watching and of course, I appreciate your comments as well. Have a great day! Best, -Mark
