A little girl came to my trainers barn to build up her confidence on dead quiet lesson horses. I typically rode my horse before or after her lesson so she could see a little bit and one day she asked my trainer if she could ride him. Trainer chuckled a little bit and said "Sweetheart, we like you too much to put you on him" He's a good horse if you know what you're doing but he would've destroyed that child's confidence in five minutes

I don't have many friends so no one really asks to ride my horse, once I was out riding at the arena with my friend and my friend's friend (who's never rode before). Asked if they could ride my mare, I was gonna say no but my friend begged so I gave in and told her to keep it at a walk. My horse is a super laid back QH and has never done anything like bucking or rearing under saddle. Hardly ever spooks. Super chill. The girl gets on, walks a lap and then my friend tells her to try trotting. She does. She went half way down the arena with her bouncing along and my horse doing the best she could to tolerate a limp sack of potatoes flopping around on her before she decided she'd had enough of it and bucked like i'd never seen before. The girl had an iron grip on the horn and stayed on, but got of right after that. Never asked to ride again. My horse had never bucked before and hasn't since. Serves the girl right I think.

I realize this was 4 months ago but she never had permission to trot on her horse. She was nice enough to let her ride by walking around but then they push it too far into a trot. So yes, she did deserve a lesson from that.

I get people telling me I should sell her to a kid because she's "just a pony". A pony that's won senior cutting and ranch horse titles... She's pretty safe to ride but can spin on a die and is extremely responsive to the lightest touch, she'd throw most people by just doing what she thinks they're telling her to do. Size and breed means nothing, it's half nature and half training.

I once made the mistake to lend my precious horse to this girl who was a bit younger than me, because her horse was lame and i wanted to be nice. The agreement was if she wanted to ride she had to take lessons from my trainer. I hardly let anyone other ride one but she was a really talented rider, definatly better than me, no debating there. I know that and I respect that but to have the nerve to tell me afterwards that i am ruining my horse which has been with me for 5 years was like a slap in the face. Fun fact on some shows im even placed a bit higher than her but that's beside the point. you dont just ride someone elses horse and then tell you that you're a comple shitty rider, just because you' re a bit more laid back and had to use running side rains for ages does not mean that this bratty girl can go up my mother and tell her i'm crap, at least she could tell it to my face.

I have a 7 or 8 yr. old paint quarter mix gelding. (my profile pic) He is SUPER layed back on the ground. So on the ground whether your a pro or a 3 year old kid going through the pony faze, you'll be ok. But under saddle, that's a different story. He's the type where if you haven't been riding for a few weeks, you need to grab that western saddle and strap a helmet to your head because you don't know WHAT he might do. He might do perfect, or you might ask for a canter and him just strike out or slam the brakes. For example, weeks and days before the 4H horse show, he was GREAT. He was moving great, his pivot was good, and I thought we were gonna go in maybe come out with a ribbon or two. BUT this was his first show. So we got to the fair grounds, got him out. He was fine, didn't show any sighns of fear or nervousness. We walked into the ring, our first class was showmanship. In the warm up arena I knew something was wrong. He was pacing around me, his ears were flying, and his eyes searched around nonstop. I calmed him down then we went into the arena. We started, I could feel him shaking a little, but whispered stuff in his ears to calm him down. We walked up to the first cone. His pivot was AMAZING. Better than I've ever seen him do. Then, this is when all of it went crashing down. The lady on the speaker starts talking, and it thundered kinda. Next thing I know, I'm holding onto that lead as tight as i can, and up goes Gus, my horse, rearing on his back feet, everyone thought he was gonna fall backwards. And of course the judge just stands there. .-. I calm him down, and he's completely fine again. We walk out, his nostrils still flaring some, and me choking back tears. Not because I was mad at him, not because I was mad we lost. Because I was afraid. Not afraid of him, but afraid he could or hurt me or someone else. Or maybe even ran me over. We went home, and I was actually proud. I was proud of my little gelding that I had trained myself. No trainers. No whips. No harsh bits. Just a young girl that loved her horse. And people still think he's crazy, or a "psycho paint", but I don't care. Because when I got him he did NOTHING. He just would walk in circles. So if any of you think you just wanna give up, or are afraid to get back up in the saddle, don't be. Get back up, and say "I'm gonna ride this time better than I did before."
@carrington_starr5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for that because.... Well... How do I say this.... Ok so, I'm not afraid of horse I just know what they are capable of and I know that with a good bond, the horse will trust you. An easier way to say it is that I'm not confident and when I fall I get shaky but I can force myself to get back up. I LOVE horses but that's the problem is my confidence
@Rachel-lq9vl5 жыл бұрын
@@carrington_starr Don't worry, take it from someone who's had there confidence shattered time and time again, you'll build up your confidence if you need to go 3 steps at a time. And when you fall off, unless you physically cannot ride, ALWAYS get back up. It's okay if you need to sit down and take a minute or two to gather yourself, and it's okay if you only walk the rest of the ride, baby steps. Also if you get nervous cantering or trotting, go 3 strides at a time, and go back to walk/trot and then 3 more, etc. then slowly move it up to 5 strides and so on until you can go around the entire ring.

not my horse- my trainer's horse that i regularly ride for lessons/just exercising him, the exact same thing. he is just an angel on the ground, pretty much bomb proof because he was bought from a family with a bunch of little kids. however, undersaddle he is completely different. as i said, he was ridden by little kids, who quite clearly didn't know how to ride or how to give a horse direction. he's not a pony, but he certainly acts like one- always looking for a way to escape. he's such a sweet boy once he gets to know you and knows what your asking, learns to take your direction as he starts to respect you

Thank you, I really needed this right now. I just recently lost one of my geldings to colic and even though I have other horses to ride, I’ve been avoiding it like the plague. The memories I’ve had with that horse. I got him when I was 3 and he made the perfect little pleasure horse for me to ride, perfect size, about 14.2hh. As I got older I got into barrel racing and pole bending, and little did we know he was great at it. Speedy little pony. Loved him with all of my heart.

If your horse is hot-tempered or potentially dangerous for an inexperienced rider, then of course the safest option is to say no you can't ride my horse. But as a horse owner, I am aware that owning a horse is kind of a special thing and not everyone can own their own horse. I therefore believe it is important to share your horses if you can. I ride my own horse regularly, but if any of my friends (whether they ride regularly or not at all) ask if they can ride my horse, I will say yes. I won't leave them alone with my horse, and I will of course make sure that they don't do anything to harm my horse. So if I am supervising, why wouldn't I let someone else ride my horse?
@janiellemarahulme8936 жыл бұрын
ZipGoesAMillion, your very unique rider thank you for being kind to others.🌸 I believe the exact same thing, a lot of people won't let others ride their horses for no good reason but if you can let someone ride your horse and it's docile enough why not spread the joy of riding,help each other out? My Arabian is the best horse I've ever ridden but he's that good because I've ridden him a lot and know how to control him. If a beginner gets on him he will just spook and bolt at about everything. One time I was riding in a arena and I was cantering and this girl who actually has her own horse came up to me scared the hell out of my horse because she just ran up to him mid canter and mind you I almost fell off straight off his head and she was like umm I need to ride your horse. And I was like excuse me? You NEED to ride my horse? And she was like yes I need to. I was like no sorry why don't you go ride your horse. And she said but your horse looks better and then proceeds to try and push my off my OWN horse. I was like what the hell do you think your doing and who do you think you are. I regained my balance and then I tried to tell her again nicely, my horse is very hot tempered with people he doesn't know so no you can't ride him. And she just stomped her foot and stormed off and she actually tried hurt my horse by opening the stall door when he was in there. Luckily he's really well trained and didn't leave. And if you want to know how I know she opened the stall door and tried to make him leave it's on the security cameras they had up. Worst girl I've ever experienced in my whole life.

My horse was badly mistreated and does not trust anyone but me because I was the person who retrained her. I did allow someone else to try to ride her once and she went back to acting exactly how she did before she was rehabilitated, and I haven't let anyone else ride her since. Personally, I think it is good to let your horse get used to different people because if anything ever happens to you, and it can, your horse will stand a much better chance of finding a good owner. The way my horse is now, she stands very little chance at all of being valued by anyone other than me.

I'm just lucky the guy didn't fall off and get hurt. It's moments like that that make me mad I have to use my horses for lessons to help with expenses.

Where on earth are the parents when these "entitled" little girls think they can run the world?? There's more wrong here than the stealing (taken without permission) of a ride. Good that the girl received an appropriate natural consequence of her actions. Seems to me she still owes you an apology, though.

I'm one of those people who was drawn to horses. I usually don't expect to be offered a ride. but I have hopes of at least being able to pet the horse or interact with it to some small degree. once I was offered a ride and I was a bit taken back. but I took the offer and the person was surprised because I actually knew how to ride

Im the type of person who was raised with a tiny bit of respect, so i say: Oh please no, you'll never know how he'll react. If it's my friends who's been to the stables and interacted with him then sure, i would take them for a simple warm up session. And I just avoid small kids, I have a friesian and he's pretty calm but still pretty big. I would never put a small child on him for safety reasons.

Guess I'm in the minority here. I let everyone ride my horse. NO CANTER. but walk and trot is absolutely fine. Teach them the commands while leading my horse on a lead line and then move them into the round pen and stand in the middle supervising. My only rule is if you are going to go on a joyride you are going to learn basic horsemanship too. You will brush him, pick his feet, saddle him up, help warm him up and THEN you get to ride. Afterwards you will cool him off, take off his tack and brush him down. Most people are over it the first time after they realize there is work involved. For those who aren't turned off though I can always use a riding buddy so why not get them hooked =)

Before I got my pony he belonged to the riding scholl I rode and helped at. I didn't want him in the riding school when my parents got him for me, cause all the little kids would have ruined him. Kicking to hard and yanking the bit. Then I got to the barn at 9:30 and what did I see? One of the older girls who helped there was riding him without my permission. I flipped. I screamed at her "WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING ON MY PONY?! I DIDN'T GIVE YOU PERMISSION TO RIDE HIM!!" She gave me a stupid excuse on why she was riding him. Now for life I have a groom for shows :)

The last time that someone asked me if they could ride my horse, I had him decked out in pink tack from head to hoof. They begged me to ride him. And I said sure you can if you don't mind riding on a pink saddle. The guy then asked me if either I could change the saddle or if I would allow him to change the saddle. I told him that the only way that he was going to ride my horse, was if he rode him in the tack that I have on him. He begged me more. And I said dude, don't you like women with big boobs? He said yes! I said well then, think pink baby, support breast cancer awareness, and then happily leapt onto my horse, and galloped away. LOL!

I know, I find that so rude! When I was a kid and started riding (didn't have my own horse) the occasional person would offer to lead me around on theirs after they were finished riding. These were big event horses and I was only like 8-10yrs old so it was super exciting for me and would always say thank you after they led me around for 5 mins while their horse cooled off or whatever. But I wouldn't have dared ask them if I could ride their horse! Even as a kid I thought that was sort of a cheeky thing to ask!

as an experienced rider that doesn't have or lease a horse i HATE it when people asume I'm just a little girl wanting to go on a pony ride when I ask to ride their horse. honestly you get to ride your horse almost whenever you want and despite my experience I can't lease a horse so just let me ride your FUCKING horse for 10 minutes
@saml8157 жыл бұрын
Okay, but you have to understand that people don't feel comfortable with letting someone they don't know well handle their pet, especially a pet that weighs 1000+ pounds and can literally kill someone. I also have some experience and don't own/lease a horse, but I would never ask to ride somebody's (unless I'm very, very good friends with them) because that's just not very polite. It's not their issue that you can't lease a horse and they shouldn't be guilted into letting you ride when they don't feel comfortable with it. If somebody you didn't know very well came up to you and asked to borrow your car just to drive it around, would you let them?

@hayis4horsesxx1706 жыл бұрын
Oh don't be such a spoiled brat. I don't give a damn if you can't lease a horse, I don't want you near mine. Stop whining like a two year old who couldn't get a toy they wanted. Horses are huge animals who have a mind of their own. I don't care if you have experience with them, you're not riding mine. My horse is more valuable than you're freaking life ten times over.
