And then there are the words like herb & herbal, which we in England place in the first column, but our American cousins place in the third. The second column words sound different [in my opinion] because of the tongue placement for the following vowel sound. If you listen carefully, you'll also hear the 'raspier' sound in "heat" and "heal/heel"; this is because the tongue is raised for what we call a 'long E" sound. (And I can add one to the list where the following vowel isn't "U" - although it _is_ pronounced the same: "hew" :-)

I have observed that in the UK, people pronounce ‘h’ as haitch with an aspirated h. This particularly so when spelling out words containing the letter h.
