Hi, in this video I explain all about how you should scarify your own lawns and also aerate your own lawns too.
Lawn scarification is an important procedure that should be carried out regularly to help maintain good conditions for your lawn to thrive.
Hollow tine aeration is also an important procedure that should be carried out on your lawn regularly.
The recommended time-frame would be to repeat each procedure annually.
I show you three ways you can scarify your own lawn, and you can see the pros and cons of each particular way of scarifying your grass.
I also aerate this particular lawn using my hollow tine lawn aerator machine. However I also explain the other ways you can aerate your own lawn.
If you want a healthier lawn that can thrive easier then I urge you to watch the full video and ask me any questions in the comments section below. I’m more than happy to discuss any questions you may have.
Aeration and scarification are within the reach of anybody who is willing enough to carry them out.

Been watching your videos especially this scarifying video, i bought myself a scarifier I’ve just tried it out following your instructions, mowed the lawn first then used the scarifier the amount of thatch that came out completely filled my bin right to the top it was incredible, tomorrow I’ll seed & top dress it, the reason I’ve done it early is I’m going away next week for 3 weeks hopefully the seeds should be coming through Thanks for all the advice & information 👍

That is such a great video. Brilliant to see a UK guy going over a lawn of similar size to mine and also mentioning the shade. You should go around the country doing "Rate My Lawn" to find the best and worst lawns in the country, as your style reminds me of Danny from Rate My Takeaway! Also thanks for replies in the comments as I found one where a guy asked about how wet/dry it should be. It's a scary thing to do if you've never done it before, making my lawn look possibly like the surface of the moon! Going to be doing this in the next week or so now I have the confidence, and about to watch your Overseeding and Topdressing video too. Thanks again mate, really appreciate this.

I had to rake up about 500 sq meters of moss that was in my Bermuda lawn. It was a daunting task. In the process, I had all this thatch that came up. Come to find out...I actually scarified and dethatched my lawn. I learned something very important this year. I hope my lawn recovers. I don't know how deep the Bermuda seed is, but at least now it has a fighting chance. Bermuda is supposed to spread well with fertilization. Praying for a good outcome. What do you recommend to prevent moss from coming back?
@LawnRight
@LawnRight 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephen, you'll be fine with Bermuda grass. It has a creeping nature so will recover well with fertiliser and plenty of watering. As for the moss.. you have to try and get rid of the cause of moss... it will either be one of the following... cutting the lawn too short.. so raise mower height.... or the lawn is in shade a lot or more so in winter.. raise the mower height to help... or you may be sat on alot of.clay soil which has held on to a lot of water over winter ..so look at aeration if the clay isnt too bad .. or investigate deep down drainage improvements that might be made but expensiv.. lawns need air rain and nutrients.. if they get too much of any one it affects the grass . Hope that helps 👍😊

After scarifying can you over seed and spray seaweed without top dressing and would the seed germinate without the top dressing?
@LawnRight
@LawnRight 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert.. the key point is seeds must touch soil. So yes it's possible for the seeds to germinate.. I'd use a roller or walk on them to push them down into.the soil (after you've use the hack or hard straight edge of a rake to rake the seeds so they drop down further to the soil surface. The seaweed will be fine. 👍

@LawnRight
@LawnRight 3 жыл бұрын
@@debshomegarden8501 hi Debbie, drier is better in all honesty, but I have carried out many when it's been damp. The end result is still ok but you can run the risk of rumbling water up to the surface. I'd say yes but just take it slowly. You'll still get thatch out, but if you find the machine is digging deeper into the soil hold back till a bit drier 🙂👍

Dwarf rye grasses are usually quite hard wearing but please if your grass is mixed with thin rescues and fatter rye or coarse grasses choose a similar

@LawnRight
@LawnRight 3 жыл бұрын
Hi stuart, just regular topsoil is perfectly fine as a seed covering when seeding. Most soil suppliers will sell small bags for a couple of pounds or you can often get a tonne delivered tipped to tour drive for around £45 from the local aggregate companies.. just ask for screened topsoil. If its just a dressing for goodness, the verve multipurpose compost is pretty good apart from the odd small twig I used it for years. Now I buy a specialist topdressing from field compost

Hi Shaun, Can you make a video about using chems such as moss out, lime or ironite for moss removal and maybe explain weather if its good or bad idea to mix chems such grub control or triazicide with fertilizer together for a single application. 2 birds with one stone as they say. Im curious to know if those are worth the money using in removing moss and do you use them yourself?. The ironite made by Pennington claims it makes the grass greener but 20% iron so I wonder if can kill moss. Thanks for sharing. Also last year I bought and am using a sunjoe 13" electric dethatcher and scarifier. I know this may seem like a toy but my lawn is only 425 sq. ft. and I dont need somthing commercial it does pull quite of bit of thatch out believe or not. Doug

Hi Dough it's rare I use lime, but generally I use iron sulphate for moss killing and thats all I do, then scarifying when needed

great video, less music would be better. Should all lawns have both jobs? How do you know thatch is also a problem. My yard's lawn is very hard under foot. How do you know if you need to aerate 2-3 inches of much deeper?
@LawnRight
@LawnRight 3 жыл бұрын
so scarifying deals with issues above ground.. aeration deals with issues below ground... if its hard and compacted then aerate.. if you feel a spongy layer underfoot... or its just not greening up like it should then it most likely needs scarifying.. any depth of aeration is going to help.. most aerating machines will average between 1 and 3 inches of depth.. it sjust like years ago when our elder relatives would fork their lawns.. only this is a better version.. I try and get a good balance with the music but im finding that some music does help with user engagement, hope you can tolerate most of the music

That fan rake at the start . Is that actually classed as a scarification I thought was just getting the moss off rather then digging down. I bought an electric one from screw fix with the 2 cartridges rake and scarifier bug you used a rake and said that was scarifying. Could you please explain which one you would use ? I went over it with the rake attachment over mine and neighbours and did 2 wheelie bins full 😁
@LawnRight
@LawnRight 3 жыл бұрын
Hi James so if I rake the grass a few times with the fan rake its raking the lawn. Scarifying is more aggressive and removes more stuff faster. The fan rake can achieve cutting grooves in the soil if pressed hard enough. I guess its just a question of how much hand raking you would be willing to do. So a scarifier is heavier duty. Hope that helps 🤞🙂
@jbaillie01
@jbaillie01 3 жыл бұрын
Ok thanks I've done a lot with the rake cartridge you think it's worth going over with the scarifier cartridge now or would this be sufficient I went over it few times. Not sure what's best
@LawnRight
@LawnRight 3 жыл бұрын
@@jbaillie01 hi it all depends on how it looks now. Can you see bits of soil with grooves in? If so stop and water well for next few weeks. Does it feel spongy or firm underfoot? If spongy then you can rake more till the firmness improves. If you're looking to seed then the scarifier willwuickly tackle thatch but may lead to bare areas,which is fine if seeding
@jbaillie01

@@LawnRight I will check I'm in a dilemma as I've taken on next doors front also this year and mine looks bare now. I had plan to the works re seed top dress but not sure I have the funds now so think it's a case of getting it reasonable for this year. My side has issue with shade so mines worse off can see some thatch still but once that goes won't be a lot left so I'll have to make a decision. Snow is due next week 😫😩

Hi I appreciate the informative videos and wanted to ask before I buy a bladed and interchangeable Tyne rake cylinder machine like the Hyundai petrol one that looks to be a bargain- have you any knowledge of the use of a bladed scarifier used on a turfed lawn that has the plastic netting in the turf that looks like strawberry netting? Will the machine cut through it or will it get wrapped around the cylinder and jam up the machine? Thanks in advance
@LawnRight
@LawnRight Жыл бұрын
Hi Damien... I honestly cant say.. but I cant see it being a major issue.. a lot of turf suppliers are using this approach now. But in all honesty all I can say is try a section and see.. it does depend on how deep the netting is.. the blades should be just cutting the soil surface, so with any luck the mesh is further down
@damianproud619
@damianproud619 Жыл бұрын
@@LawnRight thanks for the reply I’ll let you know when I get round to it as I will be attempting it cautiously as I can see some of the netting literally just on the surface where they did a bad job of laying the turf.

Onky roundup or anything with glyphosate in it.. applied only to the offending grasses.. or dig out.. either way youd need to dig out an reseed.. it's a yearly battle I'm afraid

EXCELLENT information here. Thank you. I am in the USA working with Tall Fescue. It was sod laid two years ago and it really needs to be cut down a bit shorter, detached and aerated. With the cooler weather coming in about two weeks I can get this rolling soon. Then I plan to over seed with perennial rye grass. Over the next few years I would like to convert to rye grass so I can begin cutting the lawn shorter. I keep the tall fescue at 4.5 inches now. I would like to cut the rye grass at about 2 inches in the future.

If I’m going to dethatch, then scarify, then aerate before I bring in sand to level and overseed! Is it best to give the lawn a good deep watering a few days in advance so the lawn/soil is damp when I do it or is it best for it to be dryer? I’ve heard some people say you don’t want the lawn/soil to be damp when you dethatch but you do want it to be damp for when you both scarify and aerate! Your opinion on that? Thanks in advance
@LawnRight
@LawnRight 3 жыл бұрын
Hi dethatch and scarifying are the same thing. So yes you can water deeply to aid aeration but it doesnt want to be damp on the day of the work

Hi yes its pretty much all good for overseeding now as I believe any major frosts are probably behind us. @LawnRight

Hi. Many thanks for the kind words. I use granular fertilizer so typically apply that, then immediately spray the weedkiller. However in your case with a liquid fert it shouldn't really matter, but the weedkiller should dry before you walk over it again.. so ideally fert first then weedkiller 🙂
