Ever feel confused about scarifying? Worried you might make a hash of it? Scared of taking out too much or what your other half might say once you've done it?
In this video I spend the first 18 minutes talking and talking all about it so that I can truly impart what's in my head into yours.
Scarifying isn't that hard, but you do have to be careful to make sure you don't overdo it. In fact it's as simple as pushing a machine across your lawn, once you've set it up.
You can scarify your lawn no matter what your budget is. If you can afford a basic springbok rake you can scarify your lawn.
like this? support me by buying me a coffee
www.buymeacoff...
Moving up in the price brackets, you can progress to a Wolf Garten hand scarifier rake, and then you can progress higher to machines that can be bought for as little as £69 right up to £2000+
Scarifying/thinning of thatch is something you should do regular to keep thatch levels in a good healthy state.
Products I recommend are ALWAYS products I personally use in my day to day business or have at least tested on this channel.
So in this video, I use the following:
Bulldog Springbok rake: amzn.to/3C6swJy
Bulldog Leaf rake (for raking into piles): amzn.to/3DQZMWp
Wolf Garten scarifying rake: amzn.to/3LDAixO and handle amzn.to/3SA50dv (as the rake doesn't come with the handle)
Leaf Grabbers: the heavy-duty ones can be found here groundsmantool...
Stihl Rl540 scarifier: ebay.us/O5ly95
The above links on eBay or amazon include my "affiliate link". This does not affect your price whatsoever, but as a thank you, I earn a "tiny" commission if you buy anything by using my links. This all helps make it all worthwhile to me to help support my family and me. Thank you.

Hi Mark sure thing although I'm sure I've touched on the topic once or twice. A thin layer of soil in the dips but built up gradually so you dont smother the grass so you basically build up the dips maybe an inch at a time, wait a few weeks for the grass to grow through and repeat till level

Love watching your videos. Brought a e Einhell electric scarifier early in year after last 5 years doing it manually! (That was hard work now its easier) (Before that borrowed my dad's old scarifier (electric rake). Did it end of March then again last weekend. Even though I did it March you should of seen the stuff it took out last week my gosh! In March I just used the rake cartridge but last week I used both the rake and blades and used the blade on lightest setting to verticut in fashion. I didn't want to go deeper but if I did would it create those grooves you get when you scarify? These electric ones are good ( I have a slope plus small garden) but are no mach to the petrol ones like yours. Ps hate how these companies don't know what they are called or name them wrongly. Einhell say the blades are for scarifying and the rake tines for aerating. I'd disagree and that rake is good for getting moss up etc and blade for aerating (in a fashion like creating grooves for air and water) scarifying/verticutting.
@LawnRight
@LawnRight 2 жыл бұрын
Hi.. yep. The more you scarify or rake, the closer you get to soil and reducing the thatch level. Ideally youd just scratch the soil surface lightly when scarifying or raking but even if you leave a bir, you've made an improvement.. the issue isshen folks use lawn rakes and never take enough out.. leaving a thick thatch layer while thinking theyve done enough..

Shaun, I have watched a lot of You Tube videos about lawns but this one was extremely informative. Thank you so much. In particular, I never realised the difference between my scarifier and electric lawn rake. Now I know. You always bring it down to the amateur level which is great. One question...front lawn killed off and top soiled and reseeded this year in late May and early June. Used rescues and Bents. I have a scarifier and recently bought an electric rake. I have noticed quite a lot of dead grass. Is it ok to use the lawn rake now?

Great video once again, thanks! A quick question: I plan to scarify and then aerate but I have a dilemma about what to do afterwards as I am running out of time. 1. Overseed now and use weed and feed (with iron) in Spring, or 2. Used Autumn weed and feed (with iron) now and overseed in spring? The lawn is full of weeds and moss - I used Weedol a week ago, but I don’t think I will have time to do both 1 and 2 after scarifying/aerating. Thanks!
@LawnRight

Great video. How come you don’t have a catch bag on the back of your scarifyer? Did mine the other day and the bag filled up quick due to lot of thatch but made it easier tidying up, just had to empty every up and down run. Changed the blades to a rake to finish up and pick up any remaining thatch. Lawn starting to come back lovely.

Hi.. I've never ever used one. I cant honestly say but I assume I'd get annoyed at the emptying of the bag multiple times. Nowadays most commercial scarifies dont come with one

I would say the catch bag can make sense if you are doing lightweight maintenance scarifying. But if you are scarifying a lawn that has been neglected for a while, then the bag can easily fill up every meter...

Hi yes and it's hard to kill.. most likely you'll need to reapply roundup a few times but thatll kill the lawn. You can try bruising the leaves by standing or crunching them..try to apply roll on roundup carefully and then maybe again 2 to 4 weeks lateŕ.. likely your need to keep doing this for sometime.. all the while.not letting the roundup touch the grass... or dig down deep.. dig out and put in fresh soil and turf but be prepared to go down a fair way

I’m on the hunt for a petrol scarifier. I currently have an Allett Kensington mover with several different cartridges, I have the brush (less than useless), spring tine scarifier cartridge and verticut cartridge. The problem is, the scarifier cartridge is not a ‘bladed’ and therefore doesn’t enter the soil, the verticut cartridge barely enters the soil. I see you use the Stihl scarifier, are you happy with it? I’m wondering if the de-thatcher cartridge from Alett at £309.00 might be a better bet. Do you have an opinion on this? Thanks.

Hi Shaun, what should I do if my lawn is extremely mossy? Just moved into a house which has been empty for 2 years and is very shaded by trees. The lawn is 80% moss and I don’t have the budget for a new lawn. I’ve got a very basic metal rake and have attempted to scarify it using that but there’s still a lot of moss being left behind.
@LawnRight
@LawnRight Жыл бұрын
Hi.. so you're definitely going g to have a battle till you can increase natural light getting in. Lawns need minimum of 3 hours of direct sunlight a day to thrive.. anything less and you slowly start to see thinning...the thinning then allows moss to creep in to the gaps.. so working on trees although costly would help. This is why lawns deteriorate every winter typically when theres less light around. Other than that.. raising the mower height up will allow what grass is there to be cut higher than the moss, enjoy the sun and improve a bit. As for the moss it will weaken more in the next few weeks as the weather improves.. ideally though you would heavily scarify it out and choose a shaded grass seed, scatter then cover with a thin layer of topsoil or compost
@MxHawthy
@MxHawthy Жыл бұрын
@@LawnRight thanks for the quick reply. Unfortunately my lawn is shaded by 5 really tall trees that are on the other side of the fence, at the end of my garden, so they don't belong to me and all I can do is cut the bits that hang over my fence but it won't increase the natural light very much. Is there any other options for me or is my lawn just doomed to never be nice?

Hi Shaun. I just wanted to say thanks for sharing your knowledge you have worked hard for years to build. That is very generous of you. I had got the lawns here to a good standard after doing a spring renovation. I went away for a respite break (carer for my mum as well as full-time job) and got covid, so was away for about 3-4 weeks to keep covid away from her. While I was away we had the drought and on return the lawns were like cardboard with die-off as they were not watered or cut by my stand-in. I just cut them, waited for some break in the drought and hit them again about 10 days ago with a hard (-10mm) 2 pass blade scarify, light power rake with wire tines and the Landzie aerator I bought after watching your video on them. I did apply some DIY centre "lawn revive" product supposedly with a wetting agent and seed in (unfortunately not the stuff you advised, no budget left), am keeping them watered and they are coming back already. Hopefully by spring my financial situation will have recovered and I can go with better care products you recommend. Message to those feeling nervous about scarifying, just follow Shaun's advice for an improved lawn. It'll look a mess for a couple of weeks but you will see it improve very quickly and it'll be healthier for it in the long run. Using quality lawn products after will accelerate recovery and give a healthier lawn.

How long after scarification should I start mowing again? Does it need to be left to recover or can I continue with regular cutting? thanks

Hi Mark you can cut as soon as it's ready as per usual mowing schedule. Thanks

Thanks for putting this video together Shaun. It couldn’t have come at a better time. I’ve just purchased the 1800w vonhaus scarifier that you recommended with the walensee hollow tine aerater. I can’t wait to get some proper lawn care work done on the lawns. But I’m nervous to do so as I’ve never done these things before. Hopefully this video and all the others of yours that I’ve watched numerous times now can help. Wish me luck! 😂

No time like the present...I guarantee many moments of "omg!!" As you scarify.... take your time and go lightly in more than 1 direction

Hi Shaun Do you recommend mulching the lawn grass and if so when and how often? KR Jim

Hi..yes from time to time but do it regular when.you do.. and just taking small bits off so only small clippings drop from the mower.. it's not essential for year round but no harm doing it say once a month 😊

Hi it's just a case of waiting for it to grow again, so cut as you normally would 😊😊

It will improve.. it can be a bit daunting.. with good temps, actively growing grass and moisture itll recover in around 6 weeks to a degree .. I reckon in maybe 4 weeks itll look quite a bit better 😊👍

I’ve cut my grass, scarifyied it on the lowest setting in 3 directions then ran the mower over a few times to pull the remaining that up, but there’s still dead grass I can pull out with my fingers, should I scalp it with the mower to cut it out? The new grass looks fine but it’s the old grass that’s obviously been down years and years, didn’t know if I just cut it out on the lowest setting it’ll remove it, I’d show a picture if I could send one. Thing is if I left it as it is it still comes back pretty quick it’s no patches.

Hi it could simply be a different species such as meadow grass. As long as youve created a soil groove you've done enough. By all means go over in different directions and you'll take a bit more if needed

@@LawnRightthanks for the advice 👌 I’d like to rip it all up and add irrigation and seed it from scratch just don’t have the time atm 🥴 I did the front 2 years ago and that’s mint now, especially with it been south facing, the irrigstion made it stayed lush and green despite everyone else’s been scorched by the sun this year mine was nice and green 😎

Loving your videos and when I get some spare time, my lawn will start getting some tlc. 1 question though, I've got a lot of weeds and clover should I try and kill them off before scarifying? Keep the videos coming.

Hi at this moment and time of year I'd say yes get some weedkiller down. Then in a week or so the weeds will be well on their way so you could scarify.... also.... you could scarify now.. then look to treat the weeds in a few weeks once the weeds generate again but were getting close to lower temps so may not fully kill them off as we progress through the season...

@@nigbuzz be careful what you use, if you are doing any seed work you are probably better off using something like glyphosate spot spraying (as it is not selective) I know for a fact the Verdine one product (now called Weedol) has residual that last months so will prevent you being able to seed until next year.
