I just rubbed mine on the sidewalk and it worked fine. Only took a few minutes per seed. All sprouted. They were from dried lotus seeds I bought at Hobby Lobby 4 or 5 years ago. I put the jar of water on a heat mat and on the third day added a full spectrum lamp. All had 2-4 inch green growth within a week. Gail is right, none of the funky little odd shaped ones sprouted.

In the wild or un scored they take aprox 4 months to germinate, That makes alot of sense so the seeds get dropped in late autumn so they sprout in the spring time. Also u can do this with some nice coarse sand paper it only takes about 1 min per seed, If u don't want to buy a bench grinder.

...or just a piece of sandpaper... no grinders needed. American lotus is the native species, fabulous big flowers (largest of N American wildflowers) and leaves. We have lots on the Sassafras River off the Chesapeake Bay, as well as a few straggling around in the backwaters of the Susquehanna. (parks do not allow removal of native species).

what is growing in the pots with you're water lotus? is it some kind of floating plant that will help support you're lotus? Also I have been trying my hand at growing lotus seeds that i bought off ebay and it is interesting to learn about the floating ones and how they will probably be duds lol. I watched another video i think from some chinese guy and tried his method of using a pair of wire snips and just snipping the pointy end and so far I was able to get almost all of them to germinate. Now my issue is what to do with 30 plus germinated plants lol. I had put 6 of the sprouted seeds in just a 12x6 inch deep pot, and ended up with a twisted mess as they grew! big mistake. So would you suggest growing only 1 lotus per you're barrel?

@cmdrcrimbo6 жыл бұрын
One end is a bit pointy and the other has a tiny dimple like a belly button, U sand the dimple side.
@mixiekins5 жыл бұрын
Yup, dimple. I also find it's much faster and easier to use those jumbo toenail clippers (not fingernail, as they're too small to get enough purchase on the surface). You can wedge the corner of one side of the clippers in the dimple and bite to make a score int he shell. Once you've done that, work your way around so that there's a *-like star shape of lines radiating out from the dimple. You can usually get away with 6 to 8 lines around, the exact amount isn't as important as it is to have them close enough that you can then grip the space between two lines perpendicular to the direction of said lines, so that the point of one jaw is in one line while the opposite jaw is in an adjacent line. You can then bite down with the clippers to score across, and continue until you've cut a ring around the top of the nut. At this point the top should pop itself off freely.

Need to tell people which side to grind . Don’t touch the pointed side. Also no need to use an electric grinder. Just use a sand paper or a rough ground can do the job. The grinder is dangerous to use and the heat generated can damage the seed.

Honestly, it DOESN'T matter. as long as you cut through the outer seed coat. Once the inside is exposed to water, the seed will do the rest. It doesn't need to be so complicated as to score one end or the other. Just cut through the seed coat.

Do you know why I place them in a water glass, and they stink more then turning brown. I got my bunch of seeds from online (shipped from China) They look thin and not developed, I dump them into a cup of water full of doubts. To my surprise a few of them starting sprouting and I was so excited! I change the water diligently very day, swapping the brown water for clear water. Soon the sprouts started growing longer, unfortunately at this time, the water begin to stink and no longer turns brown. The water looks white-ish color and the the stalks started to turn really soft if I dont change the water everyday. ( I left them alone for 2 days and I almost fainted from the smell, some stalk turn soft and died) I am afraid to put them into the water tank as I am so worried they will infect the tank water and turn them all smelly as I have other water plants and some fishes in them. Please help! ( I only have one surviving seed left, and by the way, I didnt leave them out in direct sunlight. I placed them at the balcony where its quite warm, but without direct sunlight.) I am from singapore. Hope to hear from you soon =)

Question... how deep??? I have some native seed pulled from a Lotus head on the Alabama River near Selma Al. I have tried to grow them several times and they always sprout, send up the stem and sometimes a leaf or two. thats when they die... I have used sand/pea gravel before. I plan on using DIRT this time but noticed your leaves were floating on top of the container at rim level. Do you pant the sprouted seed in dirt on the bottom and just fill up the pot? the plants grow to that level and open the leaf? Thanks!
@pondplantgirl4 ай бұрын
Hello! Sorry that I have been gone for a very long time. But I'm back in action now! I grow the plants indoors until they are 4-6 inches long. I push the seed down into the soil or pea gravel just below the surface level. It will produce floating leaves. Morning sun only until you get an aerial leaf. Young plants will die if the water gets too hot. Thanks for watching!

if we had that machine .. what was the need of this video.... we wanted some simple method ...
@whoknowes15 жыл бұрын
You don't need the grinder (machine) do you have a rock? a hack saw? a concrete surface ? even a Nail File will do the job. you are trying to remove the outer seed coat just enough to expose the inner seed to water. It doesn't need to be a huge gaping hole in the side, just enough to get the seed wet, Once you have water to the inside the seed will do the rest. try rubbing the seed on the side walk, or a brick. It will take a while but you can do it with out a grinder. If you have a hack saw that will work too.

Yes
@whoknowes15 жыл бұрын
No. a lily will grow to the top of the water and float that is all. A lotus had floating leaves as a first year plant then most of the second year leaves will be on a stem above the water. Usually second year on will produce blooms.

Deb Polenz eatable is a word too. I love when people correct other people, and end up looking like a know-it-all. You learned something today.
