How to Score as an Unathletic Hooper (Breaking My OWN Game Down)

After all these years breaking down the greats' games, I figured I'd take a few minutes to mess around and break my OWN game down. Not only was this just a fun process as I rarely watch my own film, but I think it's super applicable to a lot of players out there who may not be the most athletic!

I am coming back from a spinal problem that put me in a wheelchair, and it has taken me everything to learn how to move again and play again. Due to my loss of athleticism, I work out even at night, doing stretches, lunges, everything to make me stronger and faster, regardless of the pain involved. When I come back to full capacity, I will come to one of your videos to thank you Coleman Ayers. I am continents away from you, but am consuming your content like you are my coach. I don't know how, but major rewards are coming your way soon, due to the unseen effort behind the camera and even the court that you put into your work. Keep grinding Coleman, don't lose the grit. Stay blessed.

Love this. As a 42 year old who can still hang with the young guys, I've seen myself gravitate to a lot of this kind of stuff over the years. Like they say, "Old age and treachery beats youth and athleticism every time." Well, not every time. But enough of the time to keep me playing.

My knees have been destroyed for a couple years now and my quickness and vertical are just gone. I'm still playing a lot and my game basically turn into solely jumpshooting since I couldn't get past defenders anymore. After watching this you made me realize I need to use my off arm more. So many times I would change my speed to get past defenders after a cross and they were essentially just holding me, giving me light pushes so I couldn't get past. Plus I was never the strongest. But using my off arm is going to help so much I can already tell. Cant wait to try it tomorrow.

You mentioned the foot tap but the importance of footwork and body positioning needed to be highlighted… These aren’t just ways to score as a unathletic player these are just high iq plays, Like how most defenders don’t really move the feet just use the arm to try to slow and match your pace and when you knock that arm down it essentially finishes the defender …once you get a defender on your hip he’s now a hostage… Great video..everything mentioned in the video is Trae young

Really enjoyed this video! I've always been one of those players who thrived off defense way before coming into my own offensively. I liked what you said as far as change of speed especially. Growing up I never made it to any high school let alone jr. high level ball aside from being a equipment manager who was able to scrimmage at times. (Otherwise just playing pickup with friends who made it to that level, going further, etc.) I was a late bloomer and have been a little more on the athletic side, but there's times I go places where my athleticism pales, so I lose confidence in terms of what I can do on offense (aside from some post game haha.) Definitely going to try some of these things and hopefully get some offense going again. (Especially the attack off the hang dribble.)

one of the things i've been practicing after looking at luka and jokic's game is pivot foot shenanigans. the step through where your pivot foot leaves the ground and everyone likes to call traveling on nba twitter is a great technique to throw defenders off guard. ain't traveling till that pivot foot touches back down so you can literally karate kid on your defender if you... wanted to i guess.

The quick release and surprise or off-balance shots have kept me competitive on most courts. I have always been the shortest player on the court, and early on I only used speed and quickness. As I have lost all that I use a lot of quick release and surprise moves. Using the left in situations that nobody would. Awkard footwork and off-balance takes have kept me in the game.

I would like to offer an alternative approach. Basketball athleticism is actually very simple. Especially compared to other sports such as football, hockey, etc. Your explosive movements in basketball are the first step, jumping, decelerating, and lateral movements. Those can be achieved with these exercises: Box Jump, straight jump, jumping rope (emphasis on calf bounce, no rope needed), quad extension machine, and leg adductor/abductor machine (emphasis on abducting). You dont need to lift any weights at all and you only need access to two basic machines. Planet fitness has them. You can be very lean as a basketball player but as long as you are explosive in these movements you can be very effective. Unlike other sports where size is a huge factor.

Haha for sure! Here’s the thing. Any of these breakdowns are only the first step. Once we’re on the court, the game happens too fast for us to magically apply things we’ve learned through our slow-thinking processes. We’re so focused on competing and winning that we resort to our habits. I’d suggest training on all of these in a 1v1 or maybe 3v3, while trying it out by yourself at times, then working your way up to the point where you don’t have to “remember,” it just happens!

Asdad start running consistently to improve your speed and mobility. Not for the purpose of losing weight, but to become faster. Take a break if you want from hooping, and decided the next one month, you will practice running and sprints. Then practice exercises for mobility. Set a 6 month goal for this. Movement will start feeling easier. Your hips which seem to be tight, will open up. Just be consistent with this. Don't focus on high reps, no. Just consistency. Add plyometrics too. Then be consistent. Let speed and mobility be your goals this year.

Krisna give yourself a few days to digest a bad game. The emotional side of it is what is hurting you. Then when the emotions subside, visualize an area you messed up, and work on it. Over time, transform embarassment into anger. Anger that drives you to show your opponents what you are capable of. Anger that motivates you to be consistent in training. Then, you become a beast
