I have been using hairspray to seal the oil pastel paintings. But one day I guess I had a bright moment, so I tried using my heat gun over a oil pastel sketch. And boy it was great 🤯 The oil pastels melted, and now I can close my sketch book without any smoshiness anywhere 😃😃 This made it SO MUCH EASIER!

Really?!?!? Hmmmm - wonder if a hair drier would do the same thing?
@Alice_in_artsupply_hoarderland

Yes It does. I tried with a hair dryer, too. If it is a thick layer with oil pastels, I have done the drying process in a couple of rounds. If you hold it in the right angle you see the oil pastel melt. Then wait a second until it is cold again 😊

Bob Burridge loves to paint on paper, he always takes a piece of the paints tape or something stronger and sticks the paper to the table so he can work without it moving all around 😊figured maybe you knew but wanted to share, I have learned so much from you both, have bit been able to create/practice but I look forward to it. In the meantime I have enjoyed coming to live and learn with you for quite a while.

I bought some deli paper at Costco which works great for popping between pages to prevent smearing or unwanted transfers. I like that it’s precut and I can use sheets over and over before they finally get so ragged they have to be replaced. Also, Sandi, I love how you pronounce “oil” which is how I say it, too (I grew up in Louisiana). Love your experiment. Takes me back a few years before I was forced to be tethered to an oxygen tank. After all the sprays half killed me and needed to seal these babies. I had a phase of Atelier paints(acrylics). They have mediums and fixative up the wazoo. We're fortunate we'd gotten an art supply hear in the hi Desert..Yucca Valley, Ca. They started closing out 2 other locations and when my local Jack's followed suit I filled out some of my acrylics, pastels, and pan pastels. You name it from watercolor faves to well.. to the point I got the mediums that I'd wanted a 60% off. After all the sprays the non-propellant ones are the best. ATELIER UNIVERSAL VARNISH / MEDIUM! It's I believe originally out of Australia (no idea if the States carry it or what the deal is after COVID restrictions) It is the best out of many.. wipe it on in thin coats with a taklon glaze brush.. soft bristle.(let it dry thoroughly and repeat about 3-4xs. Wash out with soap and water immediately or if on site put it in a wet baggie, washed out with paint water and wrap in saran in the bag it goes till you get back to the studio. Not linked to this product,. but sharing my best and safest for your lungs. This works on everything I use so far have not tried it with ws Holbein oils cuz I had to take time off to recover from pneumonia and blood clots in my lungs. So no breathing anything caustic as oils. Sorry this is so long but we that experiment in our art with multimedia.. gotta share the results. Thank you for your shows. Also. Do you have any shows on how to make a watercolor journal out of good paper like arches. There has to be a good easy way. There are times laying in bed that I want to take it beyond my mixed media or Canson or others. But a bad day is in my way of making it back to my studio, and I have to create art to rise above the pain. When I got a great idea I want to turnout beautiful with paper that isn't fighting me. Onna

I LOVE the painting with the blue background, but I also love those beautiful irises! Win win! You are such a cute little character, Sandi. I was giggling at you doing your twirling. I was thinking what neighbors would think if you lived in the city and they could see all of your antics but didn’t know what you were doing. It made me laugh.😂 Very helpful info in this video! Also, I love your long luscious curly hair. I wish mine were like that, but alas it is straight and not very thick.

Hi Sandi,thanks so much for this video.I love your two big floral works in your Hallway,they are really beautiful.Such a coincidence,This week I received an order of the liquitex satin varnish,I have tried it on a large abstract collage that I did using painted tissue as well as Caran dashe wax crayons,it worked a treat,and as I’d hoped it made the sharp edged look really crisp and bright the colours out too,so great success.I have the same fixative as you,haven’t used it yet as I hold back from using pastels as they don’t dryjust me being lazy I guess,but they can be soooo messy,I will definitely go with your idea of waxed paper in my books👍🏻.I love that you have moved your workstation to under the window,I have been hoping you would do that for ages,hope it’s working for you.Hugs x

I’ve just reached the part where you show the painting you don’t like. And of course, I LOVE it! Might you be posting it for sale? Reached the end of the video and edited to say I love both flower paintings but the 1st one the most. I can feel both the purple and the red flower blowing with the breeze.

Your new studio arrangement! Airy! I wonder if your chi is flowing in a new way? Tantalizing glimpses of your decor! Anyway, now I have a renewed interest in my oil pastels. I’ve already got that varnish (it’s ‘bout to run out) and sprays. I’m fixin’ to unwrap all those oil pastels (the white crayon is ‘bout to run out). I’ve got a great evening ahead.

I love those flower paintings!! I think if they were in my home I wouldn’t necessarily put them next to each other personally, because I see one as more warm toned and the other as more cool toned. Definitely would love the pair but would put them in different rooms depending on where they fit best!

Dear Sandi, I love your art! Thank you so much for sharing your techniques. In Argentina to seal oil pastels we use vinilic glue (Elmer's or national label) or Elmer's clear glue (but prefer the vinilic one) with a smooth brush 1 layer. Love all your videos. You inspire me! Suscribed.

I have been experimenting with oil pastels (doing a Kandinsky study) because I don't really like them. I decided to do the study to see if it is the medium or me - the conclusion is that I just need to use them more because they are such an expressive medium. Thanks for the video because I have been wondering how to preserve the paintings if I like the result. Love your channel! 💜

Thank you for your tip on sealing your work. When I am sealing my pastels work, I use clear can spray that they use to color bicycles. It’s acrylic spray. I hold my breath too and run 😊 and fan the surface like you did between layers. But I usually leave it outside for about 15 minutes

Thank you so much Sandi for the information on fixatives. I tend to gravitate towards one brand of Strathmore sketchbooks. They are coil bound watercolor paper with a layer of vellum or regular paper sandwiched in between each page. I then don't have to worry about any huge smooshing problem, and they seem to have worked well. I think the ones I have are 11X14 and 8x6 ish and are also hardbound. Thanks again!

Those large floral paintings are so beautiful! Request: Can you do an explanation in a video of how you prepare your paints (acrylics) to get them that consistency? (If you haven’t already) I use primarily acrylic and I do enjoy using a thicker consistency but sometimes I would like to paint in multiple layers and thinner layers seem to work better 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
