How to Season A Camp Oven/ Dutch Oven, Spun Steel or Cast Iron

With the coming of winter and the ability to have campfire again it’s probably a good time to break out the camp oven & cast iron cooking gear & prepare it for the winter season.

Looks like we have the same oven and BBQ. I used the same method to season mine and got the same excellent result. So much lighter than my old cast iron one. Cheers..

If you turn everything upside down and at an angle when you season it you will get better results! It allows any excess oil to drip off instead of pooling inside whatever you’re seasoning! I also let everything cool back down slowly in the oven over a couple hours, but that might not be overly important and more tradition.

I’ve noticed that the spun steel Dutch oven is the choice over cast iron these days. Would you say the steel cooks the same as in temperature and time? How about when you are only using the camp fire for cooking? Thanks.

In my experience they cook the same - the spun cools off a lot quicker, so on a longer cook you may have to change coals & reload.....beyond that all good.

My next trip series we cooked solely on fire, used the oven, the lid as a frying pan etc etc.....was great not having to carry a BBQ.
