Your spun steel camp oven need to be seasoned before being used for the the first time. Follow our simple foolproof method. The same method can be used to season a cast iron camp oven.

Good little video mate. How do you go about cleaning and re-seasoning between uses? Do you do it over a fire?

Hi mate. To clean them we just scrape out anything left and give it a wipe out with paper towel. Occasionally we’ll give them a wash in soapy water which is supposedly a no-no but we do it anyway. If the seasoning gets a bit thin or comes off we just rub a bit more rice bran oil into it and heat the camp oven up. To be honest they take VERY little maintenance and we don’t worry about it much at all. The more you use them the better the coating seems to get.

@@followourtravelsau yeah nice! Maintenance seems pretty easy from what I’ve read and seen. I’ve seen heaps that using lightly soapy water is fine because the spun steel isn’t porous like the cast iron is.

As an American I had never heard of a Bedourie. But I was watching an old Malcolm Douglas episode and glimpsed the pan he used to bake a damper and thought " what is that pan". Researched and discovered something new! It really seems like you can do a WHOOOOLE lot with a Bedourie. Love how it comes from the cowboy legacy . I'm getting one and will season like you did !😃

We've been using ours for about 5 years. It's not really a Bedourie - they have more of a flat lid but they are very similar in usage. We began using the spun steel camp ovens to save weight in the caravan. The spun steel ovens weigh about a third or less of our similar sized cast iron ones. When you carry a couple of them that's a lot of weight saving. In use I find them very similar to cooking with cast iron. Malcolm Douglas is an absolute legend too! Another old aussie bloke that has had a lot to do with camp oven cooking in Australia Jack Absalom. He wrote a cookbook years ago, maybe in the 70s that is kind of the camp oven cooking bible.

@@followourtravelsau Understand now the slight difference between the Bedourie and the spun steel camp oven. I will be looking up Jack Absalom, thank you for all the info.😃
