How would you do it on a gas stove top? my dutch oven has 3 legs
@diydarkmatter
@diydarkmatter Жыл бұрын
@@cevichexconxpescado well most people who season there dutch ovens do it in the oven on 350 to 400 degrees for about a hour or so . but on the stove top how its done is pretty much the same way what your trying to do is dehydrate oil into the pores pf the cast iron . the best way i have really found in my opinion to season cast iron is to cook with it . every cast iron pan has to be cleaned if a person tells you they dont wash there cast iron there lying . i have owned cast iron my whole life and cast like any other pan needs to be cleaned at some point . even if cleaning it just means rinsing it out with hot water and wiping it clean with a rag or paper towel . so to answer your question . to season your dutch oven on your stove top im guessing you do not have a oven . thats fine . you would wipe a thin coat of oil grape seed oil is really the best but any cooking oil will work it just might smoke a little bit . do not use animal fat if you can help it like bacon grease . un less you plan on cooking with it every day . and even then i dont recommend it . animal fat will go rancid (spoil) . but wipe it with a thin coat of veggie oil . then set it on your burner and get it hot till you start to see the oil start to smoke with the lid on it turn your burner off and let it cool do this a few times till when it is cool you can see that the oil has dried inside of it . but thats only one way . you could just wipe a thin coat of oil on it get it hot let it cool then do it again . you could cook with it wipe it out rinse it out then wipe it out then wipe a new coat of oil on it while its still hot after drying on the stove burner . yes your cast dutch oven should fit on your burner maybe not great but still set on it with the legs i have legs . the only way i could not see it working on your burner is if you have a convection style burner that needs a flat surface to work . i hope this helps and dint confuse you more then you already was . really seasoning is a very simple thig it only gets confusing cause there are so many ways to do it . but really the best way is just use it clean it then dry it on the stove and wipe in a new coat of oil while its still hot . hope this helps . thank you for watching and your comment .

I have 2 of these very same Dutch Ovens myself. One I haven't even got out the box yet. I caught it on sale at Tractor Supply for like $32.00 last Fall. Love your Gas stove dark I want one here one day. Oh no no I always hear folks saying not to use a paper towel but you know what? I use lard and a paper towel too. But don't use too much Dark. Need to wipe it out as much as you can or it will gum up. Don't want it gumming up. I seasoned mine in the gas grill outside in the summer so the heat don't make the house too hot. AC cost $$. Boy Oh Boy look at you RUBB that LID!!!! Oh I sure hope you turn that Dutch Oven upside down when you put it in the oven. I remember old Cab 7 gave you that one. Sweet flower loving CABBY 7. LOL OH NO you didn't turn it upside down! That oil will gum up on the bottom......YEP at 9:26 you can see the yellow gum starting to build. It's not bad so just next time turn it upside down . Hope you don't get upset with me. Thanks Dark.....

lol thats a great story . live and learn . no the factory seasoning is just a thin coat of oil to keep it from rusting in storage . good luck with your new cast iron and congrats on graduation .

I was trained at the Escofier school of cuisine...they dont use Dutch ovens but I do . Anyway the way we seasoned caste iron pans and skillets was always to dry heat the item , throw salt into it heat it further and exfoliate using baking parchment as a cloth . Once rendered we would apply either oil or lard and rub it in until it sank in . Keeping the item as hot as possible during the whole process . No pancake or omelette ever stuck besides the first one 😂

you know i wont be the first one to say there are alot of ways to season a cast iron pan be it dutch oven or skillet . and i dont argue with much on it to be honest other then the use of animal fat and even then if the pan is used every day and cleaned regularly its fine . the reason i dont agree with the use of animal fat is that it will go rancid . now i dont use the dutch oven as much as i should and really only once in a while to be honest so it is stored most of the time . so it is seasoned with a thick coat of oil to protect it from rusting from moister in the air . now like you i find that a little lard in a hot pan is the way to go and i dont bake the skillet i just use it every day . a good used cast iron pan dont need to be seasoned because it is being seasoned every time you add a little oil to it . i wipe them out with a paper bag or paper towel once in a while when needed i will wash them in dish soap and scrub them . but most of the time some hot water and a metal spatula does the trick . you will hear all kinds of ways to season cast iron and for the most part they all work . thank you for your advice and Technik it is always nice to hear someone else's way of doing things . bless you and happy new year .
@guzgrant

@@diydarkmatter I completely agree and should have mention the lard over oil would only be advisable in busy daily restaurants scenarios and very frequent use I wasn’t trying to be pedantic , correctional at all .I was just saying how we did it incase anyone was interested . The pans were seasoned when new or if to be used repurposed for different dishes especially sauce based things which needed real cleaning , else as you say the frequent reuse kept them seasoned enough . Anyway I enjoyed your video and the reason I was looking was to find a recommendation of manufacturer for personal use , if you have any suggestions I’d appreciate that . I have a Petromax but would like to get a larger size .

I have two dutch ovens and have not used them yet, but is going to season them again like you did with your's. Mine is a Lodge brand also and I intend to get plenty of use out of them like you. I am still waiting on the skillet I ordered from the Stargazer company and it is on back order due the demand for their product. Right now I am using my Grandmother's old cast iron skillet which she used for decades in her kitchen on her wood stove. That skillet have been great for her and is fine for me.

To rehabilitate an old cast iron skillet, for example, should the rust be first removed with steel wool before seasoning?
@diydarkmatter
@diydarkmatter 2 жыл бұрын
sure you can use steel wool . put some oil in the pan and scrub it good to remove the rust . cheap veggie oil works well . then wash the pan good with soapy water . alot of people will say dont use soap . but you want to remove the rust and the oil from the pan . then once you have the rust and oil removed from the pan then season it . there are other ways to remove rust as well but this has always been a good way to do it with out alot of work or hurting the pan . good luck i hope this works well for you . thank you for watching .

@diydarkmatter

well there is three ways to do it . some better then others . 1st way is to give it a good scrubbing with soap and water after all seasoning is just baked on grease or oil . 2nd way is to soak it in a good bath of vinegar . vinegar is a acid and will eat off the oil or grease . 3rd way is to put it in a nice camp fire and burn off all the oil or grease just be sure to do it on a nice day rain or snow might crack your cast iron . after one of these three ways just give it a good coat of oil flax seed oil is the best or grape seed oil . then bake it on 350 or 400 degrees for about a hour or two . repete if you like . good luck with your new dutch oven and thank you for watching .

I really enjoyed the commentary lol Q: can olive oil be used? Q: what’s the proper way of cleaning after cooking something like say pot roast?
@diydarkmatter
@diydarkmatter Жыл бұрын
thanks . you can pretty much use any oil but some will smoke more then others . like coconut oil will smoke to high heaven . you know people are different when it comes to cleaning these if the seasoning is good a little hot water and a good wipe down and rinse is all you need . i really dont like to use soap on mine if it dont need it cause cast iron tends to take on the taste of things and soap washes that away but it wont hurt the pan any . how i like to wash mine if they get really bad is to soak them in hot water just long enough to loosen any sticky stuff maybe give it a little scrub with chore boy . rinse it out real good and dry it on the stove . if its not to bad some times ill just wipe it out real good with a paper towel .really depends on what you cook in it . if you do wash it and dry it after it cools a little bit just give it a light wipe down with veggie oil . dont use animal fat to season your pans like bacon grease . people say they do it and its ok if you cook in it everyday but animal fat will go rancid . (spoil ) . a light coat of veggie oil is really the cheapest and best way to do it . but i dont see any reason olive oil wont work .it might smoke a little bit . well i hope i answered all your questions and feel free to ask if you have other questions ill answer if i can . thanks for watching .

@diydarkmatter
@diydarkmatter 2 жыл бұрын
@@abrahamwu9680 to be honest as long as there is no burs in the surface no . cast iron has pores in it these little pores are what hold your oil or seasoning . when the pan gets hot them pores act like a small lake of hot oil . thats what keeps your pan from sticking . i see people grinding and sanding down there cast iron and i cringe . dont do it unless you have to . you are only taking away from the life of your pan . besides with a metal spatula or a chore boy you can get the same results your looking for in a smooth surface with out as much damage . you want those little lakes of oil . hope this helps buddy and enjoy your cast iron .

Maybe this is a dumb question, but how long does it take to cool off before you get it out? 🤔
@diydarkmatter
@diydarkmatter 2 жыл бұрын
i would give it a good hour or so . as long as its cool to touch you can pull it out . just remember cast iron is thicker then most pans and holds onto its heat alot longer . do not touch it if its still hot with out pot holders of some kind . you will burn yourself badly . but after a hour or so of cooling inside the oven it should be cool enough to take out with out to much worry . you can take it out of the oven hot if you like just remember to use a pot holder to protect your hands .

Isn't animal fat better for seasoning? Or should I just use vegetable oil? I just bought my first cast iron dutch oven and I need to season it.
@diydarkmatter
@diydarkmatter 6 жыл бұрын
animal fat can go rancid or spoil . use vegetable oil or olive oil flax oil canola oil work great and will last . when you wash your cast it is best to use really hot water and just rinse and wipe them out never use soap in them unless you really have to but soap is mild and wont hurt them . how ever you may have to reseason them after . never use animal fat if you dont have to .

bull buddy good to see you was just thinking about you the other day . there is a couple ways you can try the first is to get real hot on the stove and wipe out with a clean cloth . the second is to soak it in boiling hot water and then give it a good scrubbing with soap and water and a chore boy . that should do it . put back on the stove heat it up to dry then put a light coat of oil on it to help keep the seasoning . the third is what i know you wont want to hear . you will have to put it in a fire and burn off all the seasoning allow to cool wash with soap and water then re season it . again its really good to hear from you brother i hope this helps please let me know how it works out . keep in mind that mild soap will not remove the seasoning alone .

@diydarkmatter

the rust is nothing to worry about take a container that will hold the pan and cover the pan with vinegar and let it set for a day or two and it will remove the rust give it a god soapy bath that will strip the cast of the vinegar . you will have a nice rust free clean pan then season it it will be just like new .

hmm i dont remember saying lard is best its not it will work in a pinch . just like grease of any kind . but flax seed oil is the best or grape seed oil . they wont smoke as much as other oils . veggie oil works great to but it does smoke so best to season them outdoors . stay away from animal fat like lard or bacon grease . for the reason that it will go rancid . (spoil) i hope this helps and sorry for the mix up with the lard . use oil not animal fat . best site for recipes for the dutch oven is youtube . there all kinds of recipes on youtube and there cooking videos . so you can see what it looks like how long it takes learn from others mistakes and so on . again i hope this helped out have a great day and good luck with your dutch oven .

even though i have never done it im sure you can the inside of it and out as well if you hang it the object of it is to get a thin coat of oil to dry on the walls and surface of the pan . you can season a cast iron pan just by cooking in it over and over . it just takes longer . the key is to build up a surface of oil that will keep it from rusting and keep that non stick surface so yeah i think you can it would just be alot better if you did it in a oven . good luck and let me know how it turns out if you do it this way . thank you for watching .
