I love my 14 inch, is great for camp. I have been camp cooking for near 50 years. Hobby is 18th century reenactment, where we demonstrate lifestyle of the period. I bought my 14 for making pies or other items in a baking dish to be removed from it. When in camp am preparing multiple dishes so all ovens will be put to use from breakfast to supper. Also have a 2 spider skillets and kettles.

Thank you very much. I’ve been prepping and a first time dutch oven purchase was on my list. This video helped me to decide. Amazon has a great cyber Monday deal on Lodge dutch ovens, so I decided on the 10” deep. I was also able to get deals on a stand, lifter, and trivet by Lodge. The only thing needed now is a couple of steel utility pans. I’ll probably hit my local Ace hardware for those.

Great comparison video! I was searching for a video such as this a few months ago. I recently purchased the Lodge 6 and 8 quart, but I’ll probably buy both 10”s whenever they finally become available. One thing to note, is most recipes are designed for the 12”. Glad you mentioned U.S. made...it’s important! Thank you for sharing!! ✌️ 🇺🇸

Hey John, I am glad that you found it helpful. You are correct in that there are a lot of recipes, particularly in the included book, that use the 12 inch ovens and for sure there are times that they are the best and you will see one before long on my channel. What I have found is that it is pretty easy to scale a lot of these recipes down so that you are not cooking for 6-8 people all the time or if you are using recipes that are not really written specifically for dutch ovens. Yes I am amazed that they are all sold out at Lodge-hopefully all the supply chains can get back in order soon.

Thank you for this video. As a Dutch newbie, I wasn’t sure if I should get the 4 or 5 quart. This helped me decide. And you bag protection tip is great. Many cities in California are outlawing gas hookups in new construction, so I really want to learn many different ways of cooking outside without natural gas. I feel like I have a few years before it becomes an issue for my family, so I am learning now and figuring out what I want in an outdoor kitchen.

Glad you’re thinking ahead. Horrible that they think their way is the only way to be a good steward of our natural resources. I have a cousin in CA, though I’m very glad I live elsewhere. We do not have natural gas, but have a wood burning furnace that heats our home. As my husband says, you get warm twice, chopping and stacking the wood, and then burning it.

@@dickinaroundoutdoors8609 What is the process of seasoning the cast iron? Oil?
@dickinaroundoutdoors8609
@dickinaroundoutdoors8609 3 жыл бұрын
@@jamiegoguen7384 Yes, essentially you bake the pan with a small coating of oil in order to polymerize the oil into a "plastic-like" coating. There are hundreds of videos on KZbin about seasoning and one would think it is some mystical art! I use olive oil and Crisco normally. I preheat the oven to 200 and put the pans in for about 20 minutes with no oil to warm them up. After 20 minutes take them out and put a light coat of your oil all over the pan-then wipe it all out until it looks like there is no oil left. Put it back in the oven and turn heat to 300-after 15 minutes remove and wipe out again-once the oil is wiped out return to the oven and turn up to 400 (Crisco) or 425 (EVOO) and go for another hour. Once the hour is up let the pans cool down in the oven and you are done. Once I clean them I always put another very thin coat (again like you have wiped it all off) of oil on them before I put them away. You dutch oven from Lodge (assuming you bought Lodge) will come with a little book (Camp Dutch Oven Cooking 101) which gives you their instructions on all of this as well and gives you some recipes. BTW you should also grab a lid lifter for rotating and handling the oven and lid when hot. I hope you enjoy it. I will be posting some cooking in the ovens (one really good dessert) so make sure to subscribe so you know when they come out!

I mainly use my 8" DO frrom Lodge when solo camping. I do chicken parts, like thighs, or beef stew parts, to be added to other things, in the smaller DO. It is a one person cooker. and it fits on the small gas burner in my trailer, it fits on the outdoors Coleman stove. It is a handy size for small supper protein items. Based upon your advice it seems that the 5 qt./10" wide/deep oven is the most suitable for my needs (cooking stews and roasting meats for small groups of people). When it comes to new cast iron lodge is king but I got gifted an overmont branded 10ish inch deep for Christmas and I gotta say the things been pretty amazing so far other than a few nit picky quirks so to anyone new who maybe just wants to try out Dutch oven cooking without spending much cash at all I think the overmont is a good starting place just to try it out.

That's a great idea with the Lodge tote. I'm going to start doing that. I only own one of their camp dutch ovens. Was taking a serious look at the 8" one. But decided on the 10" (4 quart) model. I wanted one dutch oven. The 8" probably would have been best overall, for me. But I wanted the option of a do-everything single dutch oven for two, maybe three people. Plus, I can always cook less food in the 10" if needed. Can't cook more in the 8".

Thanks for watching. I must admit that I have never used the GSI aluminum ovens. In general I have found that aluminum, due to the better heat conduction I guess, don’t hold the heat as well especially from the lid which makes it harder to brown and cook evenly. I won’t say the GSI ovens don’t work and there are probably some good reviews out there. On the other hand, in general, aluminum is easier to care for and doesn’t rust which might be more important than the heating for your needs.

Lodge is actually not the only US manufacturer of cast iron Dutch ovens but they do have the most variety and are by far the cheapest. Others that I know of include... 1. Field Company - 4.5 quarts for $295 2. Nest Homeware - 3.5 quarts for $250 3. Finex - 5 quarts for $350 4. Butter Pat - 4.5 quarts for $475 5. Burough Furnace - 5.5 quarts for $240 It really does make it hard (for me personally) to buy from anyone other than Lodge because the difference in price is outstanding, but there are other options. I do think as of right now Lodge is the only one making camp ovens in the US though

Thanks for the question. I do not have the Lodge dutch ovens with the cast handles, only the ones with the bail handles www.lodgecastiron.com/product/dutch-oven-with-bail?sku=L8DO3 The 10 inch camp oven lid fits the 5 quart bail handle but the 12 inch lid doesn't fit the other two well (it works ok for the 7 qt bail handle but not sitting flush). The lids can certainly be used as a fry pan but it does have a bit of a concave shape so that liquids will roll to the center. That is fine though since there are no edges it keeps stuff from falling off the edge.

There are a number of light weight aluminum pans but very few of them have no or removable handles. I also prefer the (for baking) the more traditional upright cast iron skillet style sides of the Fry-Bake. There are some options here on Amazon amzn.to/3xpkxaL if you don't mind removing the handle once you get the pan and most are non-stick.. Another option is the FireBox skillet here fireboxstove.com/product/firebox-frypan-with-lifter/ that I think is a great pan but has more rounded sides, great for some things but I prefer corn bread and baked items in the upright. You can see my comparison of the larger Fry Bake and Firebox here kzbin.info/www/bejne/oIu2fGmldsurrdksi=Hv3F6IThhTr_w-qY As to the question of rocket stoves you could certainly use it to sauté and fry, just keep the heat down a bit.
