Informative video! I was unaware of the leading/trailing edges on the brushes due to rotational direction. I would presume that the more equally the forward/reverse directions were used in a bi-directional motor, the harder it would be to determine the direction of rotation in this manner. If this presumption is accurate, how could you otherwise tell? I would again presume that the trailing edge of the brush has a little build-up of carbon and not feel quite as "sharp" as the leading edge. Please set me back on should I be off-track. Accolades for a great video! I need to search for bearing replacement videos. I don't seem to be able to remove the endplate on a vacuum cleaner motor. It seems like it has a snapring but I don't see any retainer. Anyway, thanks again, but it's back to work for me!

nice video 49ers ..my brushes are in a hand router..they have removable caps and you jsut insert the brush..my question is i cant find exact size brushes so i was going to buy slightly bigger brushes and sand them down on some sandpaper...i need 7mm x 5.5mm and can only find 6.5mmx7.5mm brushes without special ordering them....do you think it will be ok sanding down about 1mm off each brush evenly on both sides to fit? the length is fine...i think it should be ok but maybe i wrong?..there are 2 brushes and each have a spring and copper shunt on them..very common..nothing spcecial other than the odd size.

You should be able to find a parts break down and specific part number for the brushes used in the unit.. Find your model number and search google from there

How does one determine the correct of rotation of the motor, and whether it is clockwise or counterclock wise and from which end of the motor does one orientate themselves for turning the motor to seat the brushes

In most cases the correct rotation depends on where the motor is being used. Ideally before you disassemble the thing that has the motor you want to replace the brushes on, take a good look how it works (spin it by hand or run the motor if it's still working) and determine the motor rotation by doing that. I have some doubts about this video, though. I mean, in plenty of applications the motor can rotate in either direction (examples: drill, sunroof motor, power window motor). What do you do then? The video doesn't mention this case. In my experience, if you buy replacement brushes for your specific motor (e.g. you have a drill and you bought replacement brushes for that drill), in many (most?) cases they come already perfectly shaped, and should be a "plug and play" solution, no seating needed.

Hi, thank you for the video. wondering if you can help. I have a festool circular saw. the brushes are 80 percent there but there is arch and spark when running in hi speed. the commutator looked black. using a commutator abrasive stick in place of the brush made it look clean. reinstalled the brush and it is still parking. any Idea what I should do next?

@@4DIYers yes, just by sanding it freehand. but did not contour the brush to fit the commutator. I have no access to the inside to put a sand paper on the commutator. I might have to ha? or can I put a sand paper on another body the same diameter as the commutator and hold the brush 90 degree to it while turning the body the same direction as motor rotates?
