How to Secure a Broken Fog Light Mounting Boss

Fog light mounting bosses are common in Kia and Hyundai bumpers. When one breaks, it can be hard to fix using normal methods because the plastic is so thin.
In this video, we demonstrate a repair on a fog light boss using an airless plastic welder, FiberFlex welding rods, and 2045 stainless steel wire mesh.
Embedding the mesh in the boss: 1:09

I love this channel. Every video is great. The mesh is such a great idea. I never liked the staples some people use, dont see staples holding up. Is this procedure the same as broken headlight plastic tabs? I know they aren't as flat.

Are all fog light housing polypropylene? or are some ABS? and is polypropylene and ABS compatible with each other for welding?

Most are PP, although I cannot say 100% for sure they are all PP. ABS and PP are not compatible when welding plastic, they are too dissimilar to blend with each other.

Take a few photos of what you are trying to repair and email it to info @ polyvance.com. If you see an I.D. mark ont he light indicating the type of plastic that is broken, that would be useful info as well. Also are you missing pieces, or do you have them all?

where can I find a mounting boss piece? My fog light cover completely fell off on the highway after some piece of metal came off a truck and hit my car. I was able to purchase the fog light cover, but it did not come with the mounting boss's and I don't know how to repair it.

You would have to fabricate them from polypropylene and weld them in place. Unfortunately, they are molded into the bumper and are not something you can buy. You could always go to a salvage yard and find a smashed bumper of the same make and model and cut out the tabs and weld them in.

Do you think Tee-nuts Gorrila glued in place would do the trick?

Tee-nuts aren't a bad idea but gorilla glue, while strong, doesn't stick the best to polypropylene. I would try welding the t-nuts in.

A body shop would be your best bet. But its easy enough you could do it yourself with a little patience.

@@johnnyesalgado6165 Surprisingly, some actually will. Many dealerships are now using plastic welders to repair some parts rather than replace them because it increases their turn time and in many cases is more profitable for them while simultaneously cheaper for the customer..

I believe that has a hard dash and is made of ABS. In which case I would use PlastiFix without question.
