Gear used (not particular about brand):
-Cambuckle straps over the top (3m length should be good for one canoe, add twists to straps to reduce noise on highway)
-Ratchet ropes on the ends (just don't overtighten)
-Hood tie down loops
-Some use the bare minimum (2-3 ropes or straps) but with 5 your canoe is very secure, won't sway on the highway, and if one strap fails or comes loose (I had it happen once), the redundancy will make it a non-issue

The under the hood straps to the engine block are great and just fold under when not in use. Love ours and is so much easier then crawling under the car for tow points.

Old surfer's trick, with twisting the roof straps to stop vibration noises. I learned that from my surf community. I carried that to my canoe tiedowns. Great vid as always Jon!

My canoe rarely comes off and I take it through wind storms and regular offroading, so I do it really differently. I actually dislike roof racks (not a long enough contact area), my vinyl gunnels go right on the bare roof, yes it scratches a little but I don't mind. It's much more stable. I just use little loops of cord and carabiners to clip one of the thwarts in to my rear roof anchor points (nothing goes over top which saves a ton of time), and a single strap to make a front triangle down to my tow hooks. Another strap pulls straight down on the rear of the canoe but there's no bending force because of the long contact area, so it can stay tied down indefinitely.

Good refresher Jon! Too much stuff out there on car tops just waiting to wiggle off before reaching the water. We watch for your next video drop each day. You do such an excellent job getting them to the screen. A TON of work while you are having fun. Hope your knee is getting stronger. You two be good!

Can always use ratchet straps if you have those, just have to be very careful with how much you tighten. As soon as you’re using more than three fingers to lift the ratchet lever, you’re too tight.

Here in the States, the rule is anything 4ft past the bumper a red flag is needed.

To be honest, there are a few changes to this, there are better straps to use and you don’t need to tie the ends, it is only stressing the canoe
@LostLakes
@LostLakes 10 ай бұрын
What's better than a cambuckle strap? The ends are for redundancy (in the event of failure or human error on the top straps) and to avoid it swaying left to right on the highway whatsoever. I wouldn't tie an UL canoe as tight but you can use any strap on any boat as long as you're not over-tightening it
