A superb guide to seeing as an artist. I am the duplicator, the copyist, the utilitarian, and this really helps by realizing that it's a challenge for so many other creative people, too. Thank you!

There were art schools going back to ancient times. The Dutch Masters came out of their art school. The Italians had apprenticeships. Shakespeare didn't have Shakespeare but he did have Plutarch's lives, history books, and the Greek Plays. "Talent is overrated. Practice and study are not."

Additional note. Van Gough was nearly blind and painted most of his paintings from an insane asylum in France.

Brilliant little thoughts. Reminds me a lot of what people obsessed with Heidegger talk about. Only this subtracts away the highfalutin terminology lol. Loved listening to this.

Observing. It's useful and important to take IN....techniques,theories like composition, how to catch the viewer's eye etc. Once they are IN...( really incorporated ), Once they have become a part of you, then you are ready to use those skills make something that is your own. Achieving satisfactory results might not come at once... It requires trust. If you copy what to see faithfully, you become a technician and people will praise your ability to reproduce reality. ( If you care what people think ). But I have found that interpreting a face or a still life or a landscape with my own personal vision is appreciated on a whole different level.

Meditation helped my art too. I tend to get ideas popping in my head and at times having out of body experiences. Maybe I'm dozing off and dreaming, who knows.

I imagine that a lot of people who watch your process here are perplexed by how many layers of paint you are putting on this canvas ! " Why didn't he just mix the right colors and put them in the right place? What is behind all this changing and repainting? And what I guiding his decisions?? "

There are two terms: Guys and Gals. But the word 'guys' has been adopted to include both genders. Of the two terms, why has GUYS been adopted? Why not 'gals' ? The answer is that there is a higher societal value to being male than there is to being female. Why are males bothered when addressed as 'gals' but females are assumed not to be bothered when addressed as 'guys' ? Why are women allowed to dress like men, but men cannot dress like women ? Why can women adopt men's names but men can't adopt women's names? There is a higher societal value to being male than there is to being female. It's SEXISM in speech and writing. Drop "Guys". The word ''Folks'' is better.
