One of the easiest connections or things to show why we should appreciate math is music, they’re intrinsically linked together. From how we structure, arrange, and compose music, to the more technical field applications of sound design and production. You need an intuitive understanding of mathematics to truly master these fields without guessing at any point, to really know them. And while math isn’t my strong suit my complaint was always how unnecessary it was in day to day life, despite my love for science. I feel like school shouldn’t separate math and science because science is the field where math gets the most use, and without math we largely just guess at the science of things. It’s like having history without language arts, if we don’t understand the language we don’t understand the history. And if we don’t understand the history, the way the people lived and died, we won’t understand their language. There are phrases and terms in foreign languages that do not translate because they represent a concept present in English, or another language. Everything is connected from the macro-chasm down to the teeny tiny functions of quantum mechanics, that’s how I learned to appreciate math.

Prior to my stroke, I was considered to be one of the top motion designers in the world. I was able to visually see music and the patterns created and translate that into 3-D space in real time. I looked at Mozart’s approach of composing and the brilliance of the way he layered things on paper. I was quick to understand that mathematics was key in creating moving art with thousands of elements moving in time. some people see colors when they hear music. I saw patterns most of the time. The patterns I saw listening to music, especially listening to Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, and the other great classical composers made it clear to me the graphical patterns possible when I timed the art I created to these patterns, and the depth of those wonderful compositions from the greats. Having to track thousand of elements in my head over time would not have been possible without understanding how mathematics had a direct correlation to the art we all create, regardless to the methods and tools we use to get there.

Math appreciation courses have been around for a while, the Joy of Math is a popular one. But a math appreciation course that uses all of today's technology to show off what math lets you do, instead of what it is, is a great idea. Inspiration at the beginning would help teach math.
@wendyjefferson42992 ай бұрын
Problem is - you don’t actually say HOW to ‘see math like art’, only (quite rightly) that it would be a good idea to do so. Remove the ‘How’ from the title so that it reads as an instruction ie ‘See Math as Art’ and it would reflect your video accurately.
@carolinedelisle5892 ай бұрын
I have seen a fair amount of this lately in my feed. It looks like there is a mouvement to try to link math to arts to make people who don’t like math appreciate it. I applaud the effort for for an engineer and quantum physics enthusiast, this approach isn’t necessary. I already like math.

I think a basic understanding of math is needed to understand everyday life. If you can't do enough math to know how long it'll take you to pay off that loan at a certain interest rate making a certain payment, you're in deep trouble. A good grounding in math also helps you understand when a politician is lying to you about what's possible. I think people get too hung up on calculations. I'm terrible at calculations, but once I left school, I realized that the calculations were less important than understanding the formulas. I do Web development now, and understanding functions in programming helped me understand how functions in calculus work.

Some math systems don't look like math so people who don't like math may not realize that they are using math. For instance, music. If you're a musician, you are using mathematics even if you don't recognize it as such. Math is an underlying concept that is literally everywhere in life.

Nice vid, Big Think! It features the same set of questions that I often hear, particularly the first one, which is quite common in discussions. However, I appreciate that math teaches us essential critical thinking skills, helping us analyze problems and approach challenges logically.

You don't need to know the mathematical details of how logic and probability work, but you DO need to be able to tell when somebody is lying to you. Just being exposed to the types of logical fallacies that are possible is motivation; you don't need to understand all of it, just know that the math works, and that ad hominem is a fallacy of relevance

If you're a math teacher and cannot give examples where math is used than you should quit teaching it. I know this from experience: I always loved science but had a real problem with math because NO teacher could give me worldy used example of it... Until I found one! Or better, he found me. From that moment on I started to see math, its use and application, EVERYWHERE. From tiles on the ground and office windows, the algorithm that control stop lights, the curves that satelites do around the Earth, the lottery, and relations between size and speed (both in engeneering and biology)... Math is all around us! Unfortunatelly many only see it on paper BECAUSE they where told/taught that's where it is.

To non math people: The fact that you are not using math to improve your life, doesn't mean that's also the case for other people. To math people: Different problems requires different solutions. You can't apply math everywhere, it' like trying to build a house with just a hammer. Very limiting. Some contexts requires communication/social skills and emotional intelligence. "Jack of all trades, master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of ONE."

Just 20-30 years ago, social sciences were struggling for the right to be called "sciences", proving themselves with math and statistics. And now, mathematicians desperately look for the ways to attract students into math through art and social sciences. How did we come to this? Is it progress or regress?

I actually greatly appreciate math, but "it helps with critical thinking" has always seemed like one of the weakest possible arguments to push learning a particular subject. You can learn critical thinking from reading stories, playing good games, working with your hands, or even listening to music. For how important math is, it's a nebulous and generic reason...
@Terry_McKinney2 ай бұрын
Math cannot be fully expressed by art, so unfortunately you can't appreciate it fully through art. The title is somehow misleading. Please amend it.
