For as long as I could remember, I had this memory of being 3 or 4 and getting on a ship somewhere in Florida with my parents and sisters. It was called The Yarmouth and it was a small passenger ship, like a ferry, but I'm not sure where it was headed I remembered playing ball with one of my sisters -- bouncing the ball back and forth to each other -- on the wooden deck, and how the ship had a kind of elongated oval shape to it. The most vivid memory of the trip, though, was of a fire that broke out in one of the staterooms. I remember waking up in the middle of the night, being rushed out of our cabin by my parents and seeing flames on one of the outside walls near the bow. That's about it, though. I don't remember much of anything after that. Anyway, when I was in my mid-20s, my family and I were together at Thanksgiving and started talking about family vacations we had taken over the years. At some point, I asked where we went the time we sailed from Florida, when there was a fire on the ship. Everyone looked at me like I was crazy. No one knew what I was talking about. My parents said we had never traveled by ship anywhere, let alone one that had a fire on board. My sisters had no recollection of this mystery ship. I was shocked. Since no one had ever talked about it before then, I assumed the fire hadn't been that big a deal -- that there was a bit of excitement but that it was put out, everyone was OK and we continued on our trip. I insisted to them that we were on this ship, that it was called The Yarmouth and left from a port in Florida -- I remembered it like it happened yesterday. They said I must have dreamed it -- but it was unlike any dream I'd ever had. It was as real as the conversation I was having with them at that moment. I was confused but figured if no one remembered it, I must have imagined it somehow. Maybe it was a dream, after all, or a vivid daydream of some sort. It was strange but I forgot about it until two years later when I was doing research for a magazine article I was writing on the Bermuda Triangle. I was going through a database of maritime disasters in that region, and something caught my eye -- the word "Yarmouth." I started reading about a ship called The Yarmouth Castle that was traveling between Miami and the Bahamas when it caught fire. The captain and crew bungled the emergency so badly that no alarm was sounded and no distress signal was sent. The ship ended up sinking -- with 88 passengers and 2 crew members either dying in the fire or drowning. Here's the freaky part. The disaster took place on Nov. 12, 1965 -- exactly one year before I was born. That weirded me out a little, to say the least. So I thought maybe I had heard about it when I was little and conflated it with some dream I had. But that didn't make sense. I not only had no memory of hearing about it, but also, why would I have been told about a horrific maritime disaster we had no connection to when I was 3 or 4 years old? And I know I hadn't heard about it later in life. It wasn't an especially well-known accident, and besides, I had never been interested in the ocean or ships or mishaps at sea. In fact, I knew virtually nothing about any maritime disaster other than the three most famous U.S.-related ones: The Titanic, the Lusitania and the Andrea Doria. I didn't know what to think -- for years, I KNEW I had been on that ship. Then m family tells me I wasn't and I don't know what to think -- and then I learn of this disaster. So who knows? The whole thing is pretty strange. It's hardly ironclad evidence for reincarnation, but I can't explain it.

Wow, that was a great story you told. I really appreciate you sharing that. If you're not already a writer, you should be ,you did a really good job. I wish I could remember something. I know I used to have reoccurring dreams but they eventually stop. One of the set the reocurred was me running, hearing emergency sirens, and bombs whistling and old ww2 airplanes dropping them. Another was running from tornados lol. I'm always trying to round up my kids for those. I never get hit in my dream. But I haven't had those in years. I am a very vivid nightly dreamer. Recently, I had some where I was the leader in escaping something unknown to me with a group of maybe 10. Escaping into space and safety, but I always have to go back and do it again for some reason. And it's a set of steps I have to go through to do this escaping and it's not easy. I'm the leader because I'm the one that figured out the steps and the others for some reason can't 😢 anyway, my dreams are absolutely crazy and I wake up, blast my crazy night to social media and my friend tells me to check out lucid dreaming and keep a dream diary. He said it's your dream you can do whatever you want in it. That was about a year ago. And I've lucid dreams once. In that dream I realized I was dreaming and I didn't mean to worry but I can wake myself up and I couldn't control it but at least it was a good dream that time most of them are not they're not all scary nightmarish but they're not all good either they're strange and I don't understand them. But I don't pray to do the hypnotic stuff into do too much third eye opening this stuff because I am a Christian and I don't want any way to open myself up to evil entities if you understand what I'm saying so I'm kind of scared into about doing any kind of that hypnosis or Kundalini Yoga and all that crap I don't want to open myself up I'm already an addict keeps me open for entities to be attracted to me. I'm in my 4d of consciousness but I'm still learning.

I can relate to a lot of what Ajahn Brahm is saying. I had a reoccurring dream from age 2/3 until 18. It played out exactly the same way without change. As I got older I Began to be interested in modern military history. I soon came to realise the dream was of the WW2 Normandy landings, in particular the British sector. Uniforms, equipment, landscape and even the weather down to the smallest detail was unbelievably accurate. Unfortunately the whole dream was filled with fear, foreboding, anxiety and terror and ends with me being killed by an explosion. If it wasn’t a past life vision it escapes me how an infants mind can produce something with such detail and historical accuracy. I would also like to know why it was present in this life. Also interesting to note is that the dreams stopped when I joined the army at 18. But nonetheless I feel blessed to have experienced it. Even though I haven’t had the dream in over 12 years I can still recall it very clearly like it was yesterday.

Can you Bible punchers have a little respect for the fact that this is a Buddhist channel presumably intended to help those who wish to understand the Buddha Dharma - not have your beliefs thrust down their throats? You'll never find a Buddhist proselytizing to a non-Buddhist unless they specifically ask to hear about Dharma. If you are incapable of emptying your cup you will remain in ignorance - why not open yourselves up to another possibility? Thank you

As a child around 3 years old I recounted in detail to my mother and babysitter my past life. We were in a burger king drive-through. According to them the story went on for about a half hour and was a very tragic tale. Death by beating by my own father. Keep in mind at this age I did not yet encounter the concepts of abuse, death. I also explained the region where I lived with my sister which was in Indiana in the boonies. All of these concepts were previously unknown to me. I have no memory of this currently but this is the story. It is far more detailed but thought I would share this interesting tidbit.

I have past life memories, but am not committed to thinking they are real. However, most important, helpful, and meaningful things are Unreal. Stories, beliefs, and culture are valuable and only held in the mind. If I can use this ability to see myself in the past as an entirely different person in a different culture, so I become more changeable and compassionate.

I also have similar experience with repeating dreams. Since I was a kid, I dreamt of this unusual woman with light blue eyes. She still visits me from time to time. Only later I recognized that woman was me in my past life. I've seen myself living different life in a very beautiful but weird world. Peculiar thing this place is not any part of our planet. It's not hell nether heaven. But definitely better than our world. In my past life I used to work in a girls pansion as a mentor and loved my job and life. In my recent life I have some social problems relating to people. Those memories and dreams could be explanation of why... It was a different realm and my spirit have difficulties adjusting.

Hi Ajahn Brahm i just found your video and it's good to finally find someone/other people who also know about reincarnation i've tried to find videos on the subject for a while now and finally found one thank you Ajahn Brahm . I've always had a strong attachment/connection with a previous life and in this life from a very early age i was always weary of this life time family I was always telling/demanding/pleading for this life time family to take me back to my own country my fortified village i told them that i miss mom,dad and friends (people of my village) and that they are missing me i told them that i was my mom and dads only child their son I described our weaponry our culture our clothes the village i live in that we grow our food keep livestock getting wood to build and for fire wood we go fishing, hunting taking only what we need when i was out anywhere with this life time family i was always trying to sneak away from them I was a natural doing things the old ways without being tort I spoke in my sleep in a language that they don't know until one day i was asleep corwed up in an armchair in the corner of the livingroom when i woke up this life time mother and this life time older brother was moaning about it in a horrible nasty way but the grandmother ended up snapping at the mother and told her that i was speaking Ukraine (rus) the he grandmother knew snippets of the language the grandmother come over and put her arms around it didn't change how the rest of the family was towards me or me towards them but i loved the grandmother as she was a very nice carring woman.as a young boy i wasn't into TV games consoles I hated anything like that and i found it very strange that they nor anyone else i met didn't have an open fire i was always an outdoorsy kid building thing's etc. I've always had and always will have my religious beliefs of reincarnation and a lot more than one earth planets etc turned out the grandmother had/has the same beliefs no one knew she had/has the same beliefs until that day other than me, the grandmother on the mothers side and the grandfather on the farther's side the family aren't a religious family at all. I still talk in my sleep I've been informed by people of this they always tell me with a strange confused look on their face they tell me that i was speaking in a language they don't know and that i actually sound like a young boy when i talk in my sleep and not always a happy young boy I've not told any of them about my past life memorys in sleep or of my very strong connections to my past life as a young boy in this life time.. one day i want to have lad with woodlands Or Ideally a reasonable sized island where i can build an old style fortified Cossack village and live their in peace and maybe even build a community with others who have a connection with that way of life or anyone who just wants to live the way of old. From an early age I've never felt the modern world is my life and still haven't got used to the modern day world i find the modern day world a horrible world to live.. Godbless you myself and all the other good decent people

Kanzee Understanding past lives helps us understand the importance of how our actions affect the world around us far beyond the limitations of what our current ego/mind can comprehend. It can be very difficult to truly empathize with the world around us when are we think about is how what we are doing will affect us, individually on the short term vs. the effects it can have on the people and things around us long after we have left our current lives. Think about how your childhood has affected your present, then you can think about how your parents childhood affected how they raised you, and how your grandparents raise your parents, and how their parents raised them, ad nauseam. Then, you have the opportunity to make decisions based on more than just what has your attention in the moment. I hope this helps.

@@JFYT1 Hmm. So for me, stuff like this always seems to work better when I can put it into the terms of skepticism. I’ve been doing this more or less, but my twist on it (if you can call it that) was based in the concept of eternal recurrence. If everything repeats infinitely, everything happens every possible way. Or has happened, with the absence of time the phrasing tends to get weird. But, the idea that all things possible occur has been my favorite method for seeing past myself and my own attachments/scenarios in my own personal life and experiences. Another take on it I enjoyed was that no matter what form life comes in, or “who” we decide we are in our individual paths the one thing we all have in common is consciousness itself. I’m not sure how relevant it is, I might just be trying to relate what I know to what you said for my own personal reasons. But safe to say I enjoyed your response/explanation, this is my first time listening to this guy or looking into buddhism really. (been more into taoism overall but I love learning new perspectives) Would you happen to know of a “starters guide” regarding buddhism and their beliefs? I’ll be googling it but it always seems easier to just ask someone who seems familiar with any given subject.

@@kan-zee Sorry too disappoint but there's NO scientific study that begins to come close to even hypothesis level criteria for ANY afterlife, Buddhist or otherwise. Science CANNOT yet give ANYONE a definitive answer. At the end of the day, most religions speculate on an afterlife. At the end of the day, most organized religions had sincere founders and early adherents who did great together but then the politicians see their power and *use* religion to control people. The Egyptians did it, the Mayans did it, Europeans did it, Semetic people's did it, the Romans did it and on you go. It provides a social cattle prod on the populace to "conform or else: go to Hell or go to prison if you do/don't x,y,z." It's a method of population control as well, since old men are very fond of telling women what to do with their bodies. Whatever. Socrates asserted "the unexamined Life is not worth living", but Plato's Cave is a cautionary tale about what can happen when you totally upend all your programminh from birth. It's NOT for the faint of heart, especially if you Don't understand at least a little Logic and Rhetoric. Philosophy is NOT a fools game and is very high stakes. Philosophers haven't been murdered for nothing ;) Always remember that people WITH Power very, very rarely want to let it go. Philosophy challenges even the notion of Power (note: I'm not talking about Politics. Politics is informed by Philosophy, but it is not Philosophy ;). So, we come to YOU: What do you think it is you REALLY want when you seek Scientific opinion on Reincarnation? Are you like a car buyer who just needs a salesman to tell you it's ok to buy the car? Or, are you fully convinced about Reincarnation and want to convince others of it, and citing Science will help? Or, do you find the idea absurd and trying to figure out why Others do believe in it? Whatever your motivation, imagine you got the answer to your question. Now what? Life is funny and being a human being is hard. We get lonely, we fear mortality (generally our own :P), and we have enormous egos that will do anything to rationalize and justify our actions for good or bad, as well as just being alive. But here's the thing... Your happiness matters. How you feel about yourself and your sense of place. Your daily quality of life inside your own head and being an identify others see. At some point, you would do well to realize that wanting to be happy requires no justification nor validation. For example, someone can say,"I'll adopt this puppy because it needs a home. I'll take care of it and make sure it's happy and safe." Now imagine someone asks,"WHY did you adopt that puppey?". You could explain it or just get right to the real truth: Because it makes me happy. And that needs no justification. But we grow up in a world demands constant justifications, explanations, reasons etc etc for am enormous amount of activity in our lives. Our very body must be justified and explained! How's that for Absurd? LOL 😂😂 So, when other people aren' seeking explanations - and I do it too, It's not like I'm sitting on Mt.Olympus sipping brandy with God/s - our internal chatter is demanding by the minute to understand Why we're doing this and that. I don't know how it works for monks, and actually I hope it's the same, but the upside to Buddhism is your conviction about anything the Buddha asserted as "true" isn't demanded before you yourself have come to a place where you believe it. Monks take many vows and if they're expected to "just believe" the whole ball of what is a fairly detailed cosmology BEFORE they take them, well, imnsho that's not just untealistic but a kind of crude mechanism to establish any spiritual authority. And, yes, I say that knowing my opinion is worth, on a good day, about two cents :p Anyway, please pardon my blathering but your question isn't just interesting but I identify with where, I think, you are coming from. I don't always hit 100% , but I do try to figure out what's driving my own questions. Sometimes that eliminates them entirely, other times it takes me on an interesting Thinkery process. So anyway, cheers! :)

No offense, but those of us with an ia above room temperature are NOT going to "just believe". We have as much obligation to protect our minds as we do our bodies.

Phoenix Chastaine Sorry if u see it that way, that's ur thinking pattern not mine. if its me I'd rather escape from the patterns. Ill delete half of the link just to let u know i wasn't doing this to spam . anyways its ur thoughts ur freedom. With Metta .{That was about 4th jhana and rebirth experience she was explaining not enlightenment. Even in first jhana its possible to become Enlightened says in thripitaka.This video ,I just wanted to tell jhana is not that difficult to get, if ur determination is there. We were told jhana was something very difficult get those days, but it was really not that difficult . that was the point i wanted to let that guy know , so he can see his own past lives if he really wants.I adore and love ajahn brahm its not something new. U just watched the video with attachments that was the issue . }

Was told by very advanced Tibetan Lama that past life regressions might be bad idea as could have killed people etc in past life.

Bullshit. If he was that advanced he'd have known that your spirit examines your previous life and learns from all you did before you come back.

I started doing past life regression youtube videos with headphones and despite dying some violent deaths I found it to be not at all scary. It seemed like the death parts wearnt so important it was more the emotional aspects of the past lives that somehow really gave me way more perspective on this one. This is the link to my favorite regression. m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnywY5xppc5omJo

I THINK I'VE HAD A FEW PAST LIVES *** IN ONE MY SISTER AND I WERE ICE SKATING ON A SMALL LAKE * IT HAD LITTLE CANNONBALL TYPE OF LAMPS WITH A WICK IN THEN * MY SISTER FELL THROUGH THE ICE * AND I SAVED HER * HOWEVER THERE WAS A VERY LARGE MAN THAT HAD FALLEN THROUGH AS WELL * HE ASKED FOR HELP TO * I FEARED THAT HE WAS TO HEAVY FOR ME TO PULL OUT * BUT MY HEART JUST COULDN'T LEAVE HIM * AS I GOT CLOSE AND STARTED REACHING OUT FOR HIM HE PULLED ME IN AND USED ME LIKE A STEP LADDER * AND I DROWNED !!! IN ANOTHER I WAS CRAWLING THROUGH AN ICE TUNNEL AND IT COLLAPSED AND I WAS CRUSHED TO DEATH THEN I BELIEVE I WAS A YOUNG WOMAN IN THE CIVIL WAR * HELPING OUT AS A NURSE !!! I HAD BEEN DISTRACTED BECAUSE THE MAN I LOVED WAS ON THIS BATTLE FEILD * I THINK THEY HAD RUN OUT OF AMMUNITION * I REMEMBER SEEING THEM PUTTING ALL KINDS OF STUFF IN THE CANNONS * I WATCHED OUT THE WINDOW BECAUSE I WAS SCARED FOR HIM !!! JUST AS I LOCATED HIM ON THE FIELD * A HUGE CANNON BLAST CAME ACROSS THE FEILD AND STRUCK AND KILLED HIM * A NAIL OR PIECE OF SCRAP METAL CAME THROUGH THE WINDOW AND STRUCK ME IN MY CHEST AND I DIED FROM THAT ***

I have memory of many little aspects of pervious lives, but of what feels like a very I guess modern life or most recent past life is only memory of dying and age.

Most of the people claim to be famous personality in their previous lives , which is odd. Reason for this is, people don't reincarnated they get the knowledge like tune in to a certain trance, and after experience it , they believe such things which they experience to them is actually happened to them. But reality is they did not reincarnated nor live another Life, only present moment is real

LOl, just cant resist thinking this joke. If being a Buddha is the original being of the Universe devoid of personal imputation, couldn't a father make his baby an original Buddha by putting a tin foil hat on his head. Or maybe a mother could make a tin foil Faraday cage around her pregnant belly. Not going to discuss conception.

Where in the Bible does it say that there are "past lives". NO WHERE. It says the opposite - there is one death: "And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment." - Hebrews 9:27

You believe that because you were told that by someone you trusted in this life. You can’t provide evidence because Constantine’s priests jumbled things up so poorly trying to gain control over the empire. The closer you look, the more you’ll find. It’s there, just waiting for you to get honest with yourself and ultimately God... but your preacher ain’t gonna like losing his cut.

I have been doing meditations to see if I can come up with something But only thing I get are glimpses as I am drifting to sleep that are very vivid of faces of people - like a picture of them and wonder if that was me - faces very detailed of people I have never seen or met One was of an older lanky tall farmer. He has Suspenders, jeans - just what you would expect That has been the most vivid one I also used to have very vivid nightmares of Native Americans fighting in a field and it was scary and violent. I was scared of them for some reason and really reacted strongly to a place in Alabama called Moundville. It went back as an adult and enjoyed it more, but something about the place is creepy to me I love now anything Native American and I don't have any bad feelings now that I am 51. Wonder if that is any indication .. but have no idea
