How to see the distance to a jump

Another exercise that has worked well for me is to set up a 3 stride line of 2 jumps, approach the first jump like I described below, then as soon as you land the first jump, sit back and make him halt in the middle of the line, sit for a few seconds, and then canter off over the second jump. It will probably take a few tries but you will get the hang of it. Be sure you sit up, deep, and keep your heels down the entire time. Approach every jump as I described below. For me, it works every time.

Perfect now I know my problem I was adjusting my horses canter to late and my jumps were never good then i watched this so my trainer told I Improved loads and soon be ready for an even higher level show classes

On the jumping problem, simply alternate between half-halting and giving leg. Leg one stride, half-halt the next. Half-halt, leg, half-halt, leg, all the way up to the jump. I don't know what to say about the not stopping after a course thing though.

@Jessiealana I would try longing her over the jumps in a round pen at the canter, just give her some more "push" 2 strides before the jump so she has an encouragement to jump it.

I have the same problem with my horse. What I do is put my leg on him by the girth when I come through the turn up to the jump, and then half-halt on every single step/stride on the approach. While doing this, I sit up and keep my back flat, sit deep in the saddle until he takes off.

i need some help, me and my horse have been jumping for a while and she REFUSES literally will not and cannot jump a verticle, its like she doesnt see it but she jumps oxers and anything else you through at her,,.. any tips?

Nice video! :) Personally I have NEVER counted the strikes before the jumps, only between two fences. I always see a stride, but sometimes it can be too short or too big. I'll try this technique and see if it helps. :)

he's see-sawing the horses mouth, which brings the horses head down but doesnt help him carry himself.

Hi, my horse rushes to the fence, I can control her over small jumps, and in small lines, but when I need some speed to get over the jump, how do I add the speed without her rushing? Also, at the end of a course, she refuses to stop, I tried the See Saw (alternating reins), and pulling, then releasing, but she doesn't stop, or it takes her a long time. How do I make her stop? (shes fine on the flat, just after a course) Mail me for more info if needed

how do i stop my horse from rushing a jump? He is an ex jumper and he acts like a small cross rail is like 4 foot or something if i let him go up to it any faster than a walk. if we walk he usally jumps good and canters after. but some days he over jumps and takes off after. (I have videos of him jumping at a walk if u dont think a horse will jump on his own at a walk. PS no i dont kick or anything to get him to jump...last time i did that he almost left me in the dirt)

Your title is terribly misleading. You offer no suggestions about how to see a distance. You just say that you see the distance three (or five or six) strides out. Not very helpful.

the video was nice, and you're a great rider! but maybe show HOW TO shorten and legnthen strides, because yes you can count, but if you don't know how to shorten and legnthen, you can't do any of what you just demonstrated. :)

This guy can’t sit up properly even tho he’s jumping to don’t see Tabitha Kyle with a crocked back and bum out the saddle when shes just cantering he needs to sit up more cuz I dunno what leaning forward does but confuse your horse on going faster then if your counting strides and leaning forward it’s just confusing the horse ( this is just my opinion )
