We camped every year from 1959 to 1968 in Yosemite. In the early 1960's, they had a real firefall off Glacier Point at night. It was awesome but it was discontinued I believe in 67-68 due to so much traffic coming up from San Joaquin Valley. Yes, they actually pushed burning logs off Glacier Point at night during the summer. Still have photos of it taken by my Dad.

My husband saw the actual firefall when he was a kid. Hot embers were spilled from Glacier Point.

I was there February 18-20, 2022. I successfully saw and captured the firefall on February 19 with my sister and brother-in-law. This was our second attempt. The first one was in 2020 before Covid but California was suffering from severe drought and there was no water flowing. This year, we were lucky. We arrived at the park on February 18. There was plenty of water but low-lying clouds and haze from the controlled burn blocked the sun. But on the second day, February 19, the conditions were perfect! Just a heads-up that getting back to your accommodation after the firefall is the worst part of the experience. Crowds and traffic affected the limited shuttle bus system. Expect at least a couple of hours to get out of the park or get to your campsite or lodge. I hope Yosemite addresses this since firefall is becoming popular. We stayed in one of the heated yurts in Curry Village. Curry Village has nice amenities. The Seven Tents cafeteria and Bar 1899 were open. We celebrated at Bar 1899 with food and beverages after. It was one of the best quick weekend trips I've ever done.

Love that you shared your experiences, thank you very much!! So glad you were able to catch the firefall!

Did you know that they had a real firefall made with fire? Between 1872 and 1969 at Glacier Pt. is where it happened every summer night. Anybody interested PBS Huell Howser's California Gold on PBS did a show on it.

@jayski94102 жыл бұрын
I remember seeing the real firefall as a kid (1964) but it wasn't until I was older that I understood they weren't actually setting the "water" waterfalls on fire. Just a bonfire of wooden logs that was pushed over the cliff. Huell Howser did an episode about it's history. kzbin.info/www/bejne/m4nWcmp7Z5Z4qLM And although there were crowds, it was nothing compared to the overwhelming crowds that show up every summer these days.
@TailsofWanderlust2 жыл бұрын
I had no idea they did that previously. I will definitely be checking that out, thank you!
