Great video. I planted 50+ asparagus from seed 3 years ago and am getting my first harvest this year. I think I'll follow your advice about not planting out the new seedlings of a different variety (UCANR 17) until later in the year when they're larger.

I started mine about a year ago, and they grew a forest of beautiful fronds over the summer. I used the soil block method, and they produced fantastic roots. I went with Erasmus, but have been thinking of starting a patch of an OP variety if I can clear some space.

You make a small trench by removing about 3 inches of soil. Just put it to the side. Plant them 3 inches deep and like 60 days later add back on the 3 inches of soil you removed. How can I tell between male and female asparagus seedlings? I have a patch of asparagus, but most of the plants are females, from seed company roots stock, females do not produce the nice thick stalks that the male planets do.

You cant till mid season when they do or dont have seed pods. The females have seed pods.

Pretty hard to tell before maturity. If you're interested, there's at least one all-male asparagus variety called Erasmus. More expensive than OP varieties, but worth it IMO.

You need to let the asparagus shoots mature and fan out and collect energy for 2 seasons so it builds up massive roots. They can get 65 feet tall. Other wise you can pick them to early and the roots starve and mature slowly.
