Known worldwide for her courage and clarity, Christiane Amanpour has spent the past three decades interviewing business, cultural and political leaders who have shaped history. In conversation with TED Curator Chris Anderson, Amanpour discusses fake news, objectivity in journalism, the leadership vacuum in global politics and more, sharing her wisdom along the way. "Be careful where you get information from," she says. "Unless we are all engaged as global citizens who appreciate the truth, who understand science, empirical evidence and facts, then we are going to be wandering around -- to a potential catastrophe."

My advice to Amanpour: Teach people to think critically and do their own research about what they are watching instead of not watching it.

It's quite hard to filter out the crap without disrupting free speech... It's up to us, ourselves to see the whole picture ourselves by reading much more information from all sides with critical methods of thinking.

The problem is that people develop a certain mindset when reading specific news sources and tend to stick with sources that perpetuate that way of thinking. It gets more and more difficult for people to challenge their views, because the willingness to do so diminishes in a world that becomes more polarized by the day. Another problem is that algorithms in search engines will prefer suggestions that cater to your individual views.

Only real way is to learn the fundamentals in a lot of different subjects, and then you can start to infer if something seems off and check multiple sources. Taking bias into account. There are no short cuts here and no simple answers. Simple is for those who don't understand the concept of responsibility.

The media is now considered open relative to 20 years ago. This new media presents various amounts of information from different sources to the consumer. It now remains for the consumer to decide, for better or for ill, which information to home in on. There is no true oracle in the sense of the word. There never has. I feel the state of the media is simply a reflection of the human condition -- namely confounding contradictions and contrasts all bound into one.

@Adam Jacobs Those pundits are in excess of the world population. Truths, objectivity and facts all describe some or other form of illusivity. The world is in of itself highly subjective and people are just a product of that and vice versa. Yes socials allow people to have a say on this and that but it's just that, a say. There is no such thing as absolutism. How far can one resolve the truth and on which bases. Even objectivity is a matter of subjectivity. No hope.

Because as global citizens it's our job to hold journalists and people in power to higher standards and accountability. If you simply give up on the truth, you give into and become complicit with a false narrative and reality. Very few times in history has the truth been factually presented without bias or agenda - humans by nature are incapable of being explicitly objective. You have to make the effort to double, triple-check your information from a number of sources - not just from your two favorite echo chambers. What are the similarities between this information being presented on local, national, and global news sources? Find the consistency in information. What are the common denominators? That is the closest you will get to learning the facts.

and to show TED that we out here do have a brain here is another factor . Even thought renewable energy has many advantages here are some disadvantages . As we have seen already .. Nuclear Plants can be very dangerous .. and destructive in natural disasters damage them .... Solar power in a huge way could increase the levels of UV rays and radiation .. just have to see if that will be the case ... Wind power and Water power are probably the best way to go .. and to put the generator onsite of the buildings is the best way .. as it will cause less damage to the terrain and wild life . These so called wind power farms and such are going to be wasteful in the end as they take up space that could be used for farming and such .. and eventually the birds and wild life will adjust to their presence .. but it is better to create the generators on the houses and building and then hook them into a grid and simply create power storage places in various areas .. That way if there is an power outage .. alot of people will not be effected if they can maintain their right to switch of the grid and produce their own power .. but these projects again are about leaderships need to control the population .. they lack knowledge and faith that the cosmos will control this and give us the best outcomes in the end .

Because news usually reflect an opinion and not a fact. Thus news then wouldnt it always be 'fake' then. If we consider only facts as real then wouldnt almost all news be fake since they always reflect an opinion be it from the journalist or the news agency it comes from. However when it boils down to authenticity, who then can challenge Amanpour's authenticity but Amanpour herself. It is her opinion and her ideas and her experience. It is true to herself so who then can challenge her unless u know and understand her opinions better than herself. I an not defending her but simply stating my opinion. My opinion isnt a fact. Its an opinion just as how most news articles are, whwther obvious or not they always perpetuate the subtle if not obvious opinion of the writer.

OK I have given this 2/3 of a view .. and already see flaws .. One dangerous thing that the internet has taught me is to be critical of all information even that coming from people that taut they have 50 million degrees behind their names .. which only means that they are good at following instructions and memorizing information . Understanding and Wisdom cannot come by degrees . First of all the problem I have with their point on Islam and no one should be slaughtering or genociding anyone ,, But because different customs .. traditions .. and lifestyles habits are necessary to people living in different parts of the world in different climates and terrains ... the world does need some boundaries in place as someone living in a climate where vegetation is available all year around .. might not always be able to understand someone living in a climate with short growing seasons . Example .. " The white man is greedy" Many of the tribes of fair complexioned poeple have lived in the colder and more hostile climates .. It was important to them to learn how to store and preserve food .. As fresh supplies were not always going to be available .. and because that window of opportunity for vegetation was limited .. they have to intensely labor .. get it while the getting is good .. So that is in the DNA of most fair complexioned people . No they are not greedy .

Climate Change ... I have learned that the world has been going on through this for billions of years and how much human activity affect it remains to be seen . But it is total nonsense to think that the corporations do not want to change and move away from Fossil fuels .. Fossil fuels are very expensive to extract . High Rate of injury .. and dangerous jobs .. they pay out much every year in workman comp for serously debilitating injuries to workers in these fields .. Renewable energy is cheaper to make .. much safer to work with and in many cases the cost is almost zero .. pure profit .. and the process of converting to these forms of energy will be a huge bonanza of profits for the corporations .. but the tactic is to scare the people into the need for change .. then gouge the prices of conversion equipment sky high .. to they can rake the public of its resources and monies ... so there is the game .. So there is what is behind the climate change propaganda .
@Lamplighter4712

I learned to question even the World Health Organization . I am old enough to remember when they put out the news everywhere that these baby formulas were superior to human breast milk . And now we see a generation with serious health problems and obesity in part because of sluggish digestive system and improper metabolic functions .. so no entity .including for profit science should be dictating to the public anything .. including no forced religions and so on ... as people should maintain the right to make up their own minds .. and even question the science .

I know since she criticized the Iranian regime and supported the Iranian demonstrations against them and also some of her critical comments against Russia, then her job position and also her fame has been increased all over the US & etc.... Here are my questions: Mrs. Amanpour, if you believe that you are living in a free & democratic country, will you dare to criticize the demonstrations against the Iranian regime and also the CIA's involvement in those protests? Will you ever support the Iranian leader? Will you tell the truth and criticize the American involvement in the Ukraine and also criticize the American Empire's military basis around the world & etc?
