If you’re planning to race on 4S, just get a 1900 - 2100kv 1/8 scale motor. That’s the standard range used in 1/8 scale electric buggy racing. If you’re just bashing and want to attain a certain speed, this video might be helpful for you.

I have a 1:8 buggy I am trying to convert from nitro to electric. I want to run 5S at first using LI-ion batteries, and potentially upgrade to 6S lipo down the line. I have the motor mount and the roller chassis. I want to just bash it and have fun for now. What motor and ESC combo should I run? Thank you!

If everything is identical absolutely. You do need separate ESC's and such as you mentioned.

Yes, however I would highly recommend going with a LiPo battery pack vs NiMh. LiPo's just have too many advantages over NiMh.
