How to SELECT a Pawpaw tree - there’s TWO types, grafted or NOT grafted paw paw.

Selecting a Pawpaw tree requires a little knowledge about the TWO types - grafted and NOT grafted. A grafted tree will have a name - the name of the variety of Pawpaw tree. They fruit in 3-4 years. A NOT grafted are simply grown from seed. They will take 7-8 yrs to fruit. Alternatively, you can graft onto these seedlings. Grafting isn't difficult. @@paulnovak833 well, tissue sampling is over my head but as technology changes, and becomes more accessible, you have an opportunity! Sample known cultivars and I suppose you'd have evidence of success. Let me know how it goes!

Two other really good points in favor of seedling pawpaws (in addition to the cost) are: 1. Any root suckers sent up will produce fruit identical to the mother tree, so if you have a good quality seedling you could eventually have a grove of such trees. 2. The lifespan of non-grafted pawpaw trees is substantially longer than grafted. The little information I've found about this indicates that within 15-20 years of productive life, grafted pawpaw trees will die back and you'll have to re-graft or be satisfied with whatever the rootstock sends up. The lifespan of pawpaw seedlings is limited only by the longevity of the root system, which could be hundreds of years. An extra 4-5 years waiting for fruit can pay you back with interest.
