Just saw this comment after asking if Carter had 125” blades for my Harvey. Do you have the Ambassador? He sounded like most 14” saws, not recommended to use anything bigger than 1/2” but I’m thinking the Harvey should be able to handle at least a 5/8” Glad to see you like it.

I went by your recommendations to what to put on my 14 inch jet bandsaw. I chose the 3/8 inch Carter. I had a Timberwolve 3/4 inch and i found that the blade was not actually round and it was quite noisy running. Thanks Alex!

Marc sent me here. What a resource! Thank you Alex! Just picked up my very first bandsaw. I did the set up following the manufacturers recommendation..mostly. I made a conscience decision to adjust the bearings that just so happened to match your recommendations, as well as the blade path on the wheels. I'm going to take your advice once again on the tension. I'm also keen on the 3/16" , 4tpi blade from Carter, for only $30!!! c'mon ya can't beat that! I look forward to perusing your video catalog and learning from a pro! Thank you so very much!

I looked thru comments and didn't see anything mentioned about your stated bandsaw speeds around the 15 minute mark. You said woodworking blades are around 31,000 SFPM - shouldn't that be 3100 SFPM range? Metal bandsaw blades are also a good bit slower than mentioned. Otherwise, another GREAT video - I've got a Rikon 10-326 with the variable speed option. Thank you for sharing knowledge on bandsaws and blades.

My apologies if I said 31,000 I did mean 3100 surface feet per minute. Metal non-Ferris should be around 900 surface feet per minute and steel should be down around 150 to 300.

Great info on blades! I heard your recommendation on the greenwood 3/8” in another video m, and was going to ask for more info. Now I understand the reasoning- it’s like running a decent combo blade on a table saw, rather than constantly changing back and forth between a rip blade and a crosscut blade. Thanks for covering all the different choices.

Update: Since buying a Laguna 14/12 bandsaw several years ago I have used the ¾” carbide-tipped Resaw King blade most of the time. Its only downside was the need to change blades in order to cut smaller-radius curves. I recently was persuaded by Alex Snodgrass on KZbin to try a 3/8” Carter blade, which he advocates as a single blade that will “do it all.” I did not have a good experience with the Carter blade. Accustomed to the Resaw King leaving a resawn surface that requires little more than sanding, I was disappointed at the rough, woolly surface left in hardwoods by the Carter blade, which required planing - wasting a lot of wood and extra labor. With only occasional use the blade gradually became noisier until it broke (not at the weld). Perhaps I just got a defective blade but, as they say, “once bitten, twice shy.” I will not be trying another Carter blade.
@bandsawlife2660

@@howardskillington4445 i’m sorry to hear that you had a bad experience, but the blade is warranted and may be a possible bad weld for giving me a rough cut. They will send you a free blade.

I used to shoot and record video professionally, and I have learned that audio is critical. if fact audio is almost more important than video. I don't know if it is settings on your audio equipment or if the equipment is defective. Thanks so much for this information!!! This is great! I just ordered a Harvey C14 primarily for re-sawing. Intuitively, it makes sense that the wider the blade the better for re-sawing. The C14 will take a 1" blade but it sounds like you are suggesting the 5/8" blade. It sounds like my theory of bigger is better (like 1" would be better than 3/4" or 5/8") is flawed (which is why you are making awesome videos and I am not lol). Can you explain the flaw in my theory a little please? I was going to DM you but I am sure there is at least one other person out here that could benefit from the response. Thanks again, you are awesome!

The wider blades are difficult to install and it’s not possible to get the deepest part of the gullet in the center of the wheel so there’s always going to be a pivot point for the blade to rock.

On this advice I am now using the Carter 3/8" blade and, on the whole, it's fine. But the contention that it saves wood compared with the Laguna carbide-tipped Resaw King blade is simply false. Yes, the carbide-tipped teeth take a slightly wider kerf, but they cut much smoother - just about ready for sanding. The Carter Greenwood blade saws rough! Stock comes through with about the same surface as lumber from a mill. By the time you get past all of that wooly surface you will have lost more wood than to the Resaw King kerf, and done more work to get there.
@bandsawlife2660
@bandsawlife2660 Жыл бұрын
I understand your opinion but I can cut faster, cheaper and more efficient. Carbide blades certainly have their uses but for the everyday woodworker they’re a waste of money unless all you want to do is strictly resaw extremely expensive exotic materials, in my opinion.

Great video, though it might be a lot better for us non US earthlings in the rest of the world, if you didn't refer to coins for sizing, as I don't have a clue what you are talking about, with regard to the size of US coins. Thanks for sharing.

Well, a coin is a coin, isn't it…? I'm not in the US either, but even though there's quite a difference in size between our largest and smallest coins, they're all pretty darn small as far as sawing curves are concerned! How large is your largest coin, if I may ask?

Alex, just watched several of your videos on band saw setup and I still have problem with “drift” when cutting even ½” wood. I have set blade with curf at middle of wheel, adjusted side guides (bearings) per your direction, thrust bearing as directed, varied tension from high to low, made sure table is square to blade et al. I am using a Rigdig 14” saw and just cannot seem to make a straight cut unless I feed wood VERY slow and even then it still drifts at later part of cut. Do you have any suggestions? Ray. understandably it comes off with a bit of bias, and it just seems weird to not touch on blades like a resaw king when its so highly touted for cut quality and its durability. yes theyre expensive as hell, but they can also be sharpened multiple times so its not as big a deal. i get it, running a really wide 3/4 blade through a half hp or even 1hp saw would be a ton of work. but id imagine modern day 1 3/4hp and up saws can run a 3/4 through most domestic hardwoods without too much hassle and other then attempting to resaw a full 12" of very dense exotics it wouldnt be outta its element. slow sure, and def not the saw and blade youd wanna run all day everyday doing that, but an garage shop worker is probably trying to maximize all of his $103/bf ebony stock lol

Hello Mr. Snodgrass and Thanks for Your time and all the informative content. I’ve just bought my first Bandsaw it’s a: Harvey Industries, AMBASSADOR C14 3HP 14" bandsaw, it takes a 125” blade. I will be following your suggestions on blades with a. Custom 3/8 GW" x 125" x 3 - Resaw & wider radius Custom 3/16" x 125" x 4 - tighter radius, would this be okay for outside of bandsaw boxes? Custom 1/8" x 125" x 14 - bandsaw box drawers and other tight radius work. Also, I see a lot of recommendations for the Laguna Resaw King, but I don’t see it offered in anything below ¾ width. Will this width work with my bandsaw? I know you recommended not going above ⅝ width on a 14” bandsaw but the quality of cut and the lifespan of said quality cuts have raised my interests and could use a little help with this decision. This blade would be for quality cuts on dry woods with the capability of clean veneer sizes and also bookmatched grain patterns. Carter doesn’t offer a "Band Saw Stabilizer® Guide System for Scroll Cutting" for my bandsaw. Can you point me to an alternative manufacturer or info on an alternate method/bandsaw set-up for making these kinds of tight radius cuts? Thank You so much for all the excellent info you've provided to the woodworking community. Mike Lopez
